I would recommend replacing the stock cpu fan with something else. The computer as a whole is great though.

I’ve been a pc gamer for over 20 years so getting my hands on a new gaming rig is always super exciting. Having built many systems over the years I’ve gone the prebuilt route the last few years. Along the way I’ve admired HP gaming systems from afar but this is the first one I’ve owned. Specification wise the Omen is very nicely loaded. It features an Intel I7 8700 processor, 16gb of RAM, 256gb M.2 pcie SSD, and a 1tb secondary hard drive. Plenty of ports are available including a Microphone jack, 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (top), 4 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (rear), 1 USB 3.1 Gen 2 (rear), 1 USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C (rear), DVI, HDMI, 3 DisplayPort, and gigabit Ethernet. Bluetooth is also onboard as is wireless AC. 5.1 channel surround is also supported. You should know that there is no CD/DVD drive in this system. No big deal for most people. I like the convenient access to 2 USB ports and a headphone and mic on the top front panel. The power button is located here as well. I’m however not a fan of the power button design. It’s a sliver of a button which is somewhat awkward to press. Unboxing the HP Omen Obelisk reveals the nicely protected pc, keyboard, mouse, and power cable. HP ingeniously packs the pc in a plastic bag with handles so removal from the box is super simple. In no time I was feasting my eyes on a great looking gaming pc. There’s not much doubt why HP calls this model Obelisk. It does look like a stone-like pillar. Sleek and modern in a finish that HP calls shadow black. It’s striking. As I power it on, the front panel Omen logo design element lights up as does the internal lighting visible through the tempered glass side panel. The glass side panel reveals even a great looking pc interior with software customizable RGB lighting and some very impressive cable management. I despise those hideously gaudy gaming towers made by other manufacturers. Here HP takes an elegant and tasteful approach to case design which would look amazing in any setting. I should note that surprisingly the system I received had some slight but noticeable damage to the case. I would have expected better quality control from HP. I’m confident that HP support will correct this issue. I quickly proceeded with setup. Here you are very simply guided through the setup process by the Microsoft virtual assistant Cortana who literally talks you through each step. Anyone could do this. You’re eventually prompted to register with HP. Upon reaching the desktop you’re presented with an offer to sign up for a one year free trial of Dropbox with 30gb of cloud storage. You’re also prompted to register for a 30 day trial subscription to McAfee LiveSafe antivirus software. As I explore and begin installing software it was apparent that the Omen’s 8th generation I7 8700,16gb of RAM, and 256gb SSD make it one super responsive system. I was additionally blown away by how quickly the Omen boots up. At under 10 seconds it’s by far the fastest pc boot speed that I’ve ever experienced. This is after all a gaming pc so my next move was to install Steam so I could get to some much anticipated gaming. I own a year old comparably equipped AMD gaming system so I was curious to see how the Omen measured up. I selected some games that I play almost daily and I immediately recognized a pronounced increase in responsiveness. Games loaded far faster and gameplay overall was noticeably smoother. Gaming is all about advantages of milliseconds so I was very pleased with the snappy performance of the Omen. Switching to Far Cry 5 I was getting around 70 FPS. I can live that but I do wish HP had included a graphics card that is a bit more future proof than the 3gb GTX 1060. You can however play nearly every game out there on mid to high settings on this 3gb version. I’ll no doubt upgrade this card in the not too distant future. In regard to other upgrades the HP Omen is somewhat limited. Yes it supports M.2 PCIe SSD but there is only 1 port. I would have appreciated 2. You are also limited to a single graphics card since there is only 1 PCIe slot on the motherboard. There is however a second empty hard drive bay if you decide to add a drive. I was very pleased that HP included a single 16gb stick of Hyper X Fury RAM on this system instead of two 8gb sticks. There is a second memory slot so upgrading to 32gb is simple and cost effective. Overall I’m very impressed by the HP Omen Obelisk. While somewhat limited in upgradeability options this system is still loaded with some very impressive gaming capabilities right out of the box. Visually this is one incredibly good looking gaming pc. HP’s attention to design and detail are exceptional. You can’t go wrong with this system. Highly recommended.

First off, I was surprised that this unit doesn't have a CD rom drive so I had to map a drive to another machine that has a drive so I could install some software. After I got everything installed, I found that although it was faster than my 3 year old PC, it wasn't significantly faster. Lastly, I was astounded to find that it uses that stupid function key lock so when you press F3, it changes the volume and the only way to actually get it to respond to F3 normally is to hold down the FN key plus F3. This means that if you have any games that use function keys, it's unusable as it is hardcode with no way to disable. You basically have to buy another keyboard that doesn't have multimedia functions in it. I contacted HP support and they told me there is no way to disable this feature. Very disappointed in this purchase.
