Customers are saying
Customers consistently note the excellent performance and quiet operation of the OMEN Obelisk Gaming Desktop. Many appreciate its attractive case design and the relatively affordable price, especially during sales. However, some users express concerns regarding the cooling system, GPU performance, and the adequacy of the power supply. The limited RAM is also a point of contention for some buyers.

Overpriced
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There really is no other way to put it with the HP Omen Obelisk.... it's overpriced for what you are getting. Now I don't begrudge anyone for not wanting to build their own PC and go the way of a system integrator, but there are better options out there than what HP is delivering. HP took the cheap route about every way they could. Single channel memory, undersized power supply, H370 motherboard with zero expansion possibilities, and non-K processor are the highlights of what went wrong. This machine scored 6103 Passmark rating with a MemoryMark of 2695. I switched out the single HyperX 2666 16GB module for two Ballistix 2400 8GB DIMMs (what I had on hand) and the MemoryMark shot up to 3076 despite being slower memory. How much more could it have possible cost to use two 8GB modules as opposed to one 16GB? The power supply is 500W which is right on the edge of what an 8700 and RTX 2080 would need. Given that there is almost no expansion capability in the system I guess I see what HP was doing, but other integrators are using larger units on similar systems. The mATX H370 motherboard has no additional PCIe expansion slots so I hope you don't want to add anything like say a capture card for streaming gameplay (if you are not so inclined to use Nvidia's solution). There are only four USB-A ports on back and two on front. Thankfully, they have added a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port so you can pickup a USB hub for those who have VR such as an Oculus Rift. If you have a gaming keyboard and mouse and headset you can use 4-5 of the ports before even considering anything else. The fact that HP provides an 8700 vs 8700k speaks volumes about what they think about overclocking. I grant that they provide a stock CPU cooler so overclocking would be out of the question, but if someone was so inclined they could provide their own cooling solution and then overclock. Fact is, overclocking is not an option. The 256GB nVME drive is a Toshiba variant and the 3.5" HDD is Seagate for those curious. Oh, and the case is nice and small with selectable RGBs if that is what you are in the market for. The system is fast and is a solid gaming experience so HP has provided that. My problem stems from the fact that the competition offers more at the same price. If this machine were $!500-$1600 I would give it a pass on many of the issues I have, but at $2k I simply cannot. It all looks like cost cutting measures to increase margins and still deliver a 'gaming' system. Just don't look too close. If you are in the market for a pre-built machine, please consider all of your options before buying this one. HP is simply leaning on the Omen name like Dell with Alienware. Neither are what they used to be. For those curious, the machine scored the following in the Passmark Performance Suite: Passmark = 6103 CPU Mark = 13405 2D Mark = 948 3D Mark = 16566 Memory Mark = 2695 Disk Mark = 9323

Great price for this desktop beast!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I initially bought an Alienware 15 (i7/GTX 1070/FHD G-Sync) laptop but returned it after two days because its a little too hot for my taste and oh the thermal throttling on that is craaazzzyyy :/ but anyway thanks to Best Buy (they're AMAZING!!!) they let me exchange it for this desktop. Got this today, like a few hours ago and so far performance is great. Boots up faster than Usain Bolt with Windows installed on 256gb NVME M.2 SSD inside and can run 4K games just fine (prolly wont maxed out all games but I tested it with Forza Horizon 4, Diablo III and Witcher 3 with Hairworks off, all in ultra settings and it runs it on 4K/60/HDR) For a prebuilt desktop, I think the price on this one is really good considering that this one comes with the latest i7 non-k CPU, 256 NVME M.2 SSD + 2TB HDD and omg that ridiculously overpriced RTX 2080 GPU! Aesthetically, I like it quite a bit although, that omen logo freaks me out (it looks like a constipated goomba) The combination of black chassis/Red LED lights/glass side door looks good in my opinion and there's also an option to change the colors and to turn it all off if you so desire. (Perfect, if you have a girl or a dude over and dont want them to find out about your RGB lights fetish) All in all, I'm super happy with my purchase and this thing meets my gaming need and future proof at that. HP did a great job at this desktop and the pricing is good! Hopefully, this thing will last me a few years before I need to upgrade. I'm also planning on playing this on a Ultrawide 1440p setup so performance should be perfect for me on that resolution. PS. Thanks, Best Buy for your amazing return/exchange policy (You da real MVP) and HP for this beast machine!

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are plenty of reviews for this PC, many that go into great detail and I've enjoyed reading them and recommend you do as well if this PC is on your radar. Not much I can add that hasn't been covered but here are some thoughts. As far as looks, the case is tall and narrow in appearance [17" H x 6.5W]...a near 3:1 ratio which is attractive to me, finish of the case is subtle and understated. Lighting could be a bit more flexible [I know...lighting] in the on-off functionality for my tastes; the transitions could be more gradual. Minor point, though. 2 USB connections on the top, rest are on the rear plane. May or may not matter to you but slightly cramped for my normal use. Given the choice, I'd swap the headphones/mic plugs for another USB port up top. You won't accidentally hit the power switch. Trust me. It's kind of fiddly but well executed. A nice touch - the filter on the bottom of the case [in front of the PS] is held in place magnetically for ease of removal for cleaning. The risers on the bottom of the case are nearly non-existent and I'd imagine airflow through the bottom is restricted; I've got mine sitting on a couple of books to get it lifted a bit and help out with getting air circulating. As another poster mentioned, do NOT put this directly on a carpeted surface, lift it up an inch or so if you can. Runs quiet but fans do begin to talk a bit under stress. Temps while benching never got out of hand though I will replace the CPU fan at some point soon. As far as benching, there are lots of choices but my numbers from limited testing put performance right up there with similarly specced rigs running overclocked CPUs, hi-thruput SSDs, etc. This box needs to make NO apologies whatsoever. 2 DIMM slots so thanks to HP for using a single 16GB stick, leaving room to add RAM [running 24GB here] versus potentially wasting 1 or 2 sticks.. Only 2 SATA connectors on the mobo, 1 used by the 2TB spinning drive. This may or may not be an issue, only you can answer that. Using the include drive cage in the open bay, I was able to ad a second spinning drive and neatly route the cables using the case-mounted cable retainers, in a matter of seconds. Nice! Overall, this thing is a beast, once we get games that push the GPU I'll be seeing how this box performs but I'm sure it will not be a disappointment. Stash the KB and mouse away for spares if you can; just as with some of my other rigs, the included KB/mouse are afterthoughts. A bit of shopping will net you much more usable [and pleasing] gear to make your time using this rig more enjoyable. Sure, you can visit various sites and order parts, track shipping, payments etc chasing the lowest price to build your own but this has a great bang for the $$$ ratio with a single warranty and reasonable flexibility for parts upgrades. When I first learned of this PC I was interested and daily looked forward to its arrival. Now that I've had a couple of days using it, I can easily say it does not disappoint. T'giving saw a price drop to a point where this is a steal. If you're serious about a gaming box [even if you aren't primarily a gamer but appreciate the performance a game box can bring to the table]...this is highly recommended!

Absolute Knockout Performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're considering this machine, you probably already know what this thing is. It is the culmination of the latest generation of top notch components in a surprisingly small package with some touches of customization ability that makes this PC feel like it'll be ready for anything thrown at it. To start, this thing is locked and loaded with some of the nicest components you can get right now, with the stars of the show being the i7 and GTX 2080. Those teamed with the m.2 SSD ensure that it screams regardless of what you're doing. Gaming is flawless at 1080p and 1440p, and is completely usable at 4k for most games I've tried. Being that the GTX 2080 is the main foundation of this system, I was quite excited to try a game with ray tracing enabled. I opted to purchase Battlefield V and shortly after getting the system, they announced an update to enable RTX and I'm happy to say that it seems to work quite well. Performance takes a slight hit, predictably, but overall, it's worth it in my estimation, especially at the lower aforementioned resolutions. All in all, things are exactly as expected and advertised here. This thing is a monster gaming machine. HP has also opted to utilize an industry standard micro-ATX motherboard instead of a proprietary setup, which is quite nice for those who may consider throwing this into a different case. Speaking of the case... Even knowing it housed a micro-ATX mobo, I was still surprised by how small this machine is. While the omission of an optical drive is a slight annoyance for a machine in this price range, it helps keep the fascia tidy. The front gives it a monolithic look, which looks great in my opinion. The logo, which is front and center and illuminated, is interesting to look at... I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it's fine I suppose. The side is comprised mostly of a glass panel, putting the well routed internals and colorful interior on full display. For those that like to tweak and personalize things, both the front logo light and internal lighting are customizable with HP's included software. Finally, as far as I can tell, the top of the case is ready for those wishing to add water cooling, which is a really nice touch. I personally don't find it necessary at this point, but it's great to have the option. One note that I'll reiterate from other reviews I've seen. For whatever reason, this machine NEEDS to have an external display plugged in AND powered up before turning the PC on. Otherwise, you'll get a series of beeps which probably will make you think something is wrong with it. I've not experienced this on any previous PCs (OEM and custom built alike). Turning the PC back off and turning your monitor on remedies the issue. All in all, this machine delivers across the board. If you're looking for a prebuilt machine that's likely going to be a strong performer for years to come, thanks to the top notch components included, this HP is worth a strong look.

A beast in the body of a mouse
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this for $1500 due to open box. I examined the chassis because it read scratches and smudges, which it did not have, so I bought it thinking I got a steal. Honestly, I tunnel visioned hard on the specs. I should've examined everything more thoroughly. When I got home, I looked at it and saw the single fan and the modified rtx 2080 that utilized blowers instead of fans. Despair hit me, but I was optimistic, after all, I am a guy that doesn't mind playing games on medium with mid range graphics cards. So I figured it'd be fine for my 1080p contented self. First thing I did was run rise of the tomb raider and use the benchmark feature. A fairly older game that a decent test of performance. While it did get great fps, I checked the temperature and saw it sitting steadily at 82 degrees the whole time. And that's at very high settings with certain features turned off at 1080p. Now, I know that is a small sample size, but even turning the settings lower had it around 78 to 80. It's too much of a liability for me especially if I want to go 1440p or 4k. Aesthetically, it looks amazing. But realistically it's poorly designed. If you plan to modify certain things, ie, bigger psu, more/ better fans, etc, more power to you. I just wanted a simple plug and play beast but I don't want to risk having to replace the most expensive/ important component if it fries.

Everything you need!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've waited a few days to write this review so as to give this computer a good going through first. Overall, I am very impressed and happy with it. The computer looks nice and seems well built, but is not to flashy compared to something you might build yourself. I think this is a good thing. I like the glass side and the adjustable lighting. But at the same time it doesn't look like it came out of the future. Part of the appeal to this unit is the easy access. One simple push of a release button on the upper back and the glass side panel pops open. If you are ever so inclined, swapping out the graphics card, power supply, fan or the memory should be a breeze. In fact, if it takes you more than about 10 seconds to ad a stick of RAM you are doing something wrong :-) You have plenty of USB ports and a USB-C port on the back. Even though this is mainly designed as a gaming computer, I am a little surprised at the lack of an SD card reader. At this price point, it would seem like a no brainer to have that. The computer is surprisingly quite. Set up is very easy. Setting up WIndows takes just a few minutes. Aside from the computer, there isn't much else in the box. A power cord, the standard paperwork, and a mouse & keyboard. Now I have to agree with some others who have mentioned that the mouse & keyboard are pretty basic. In fact, they are probably the cheapest mouse & keyboard I have ever seen. But to me that's okay. Being that this is a gaming computer, I suspect that HP is well aware that a good gaming mouse or keyboard is really a matter of personal taste. Therefore, my guess is they only included a very basic combo knowing full well that 99% of users either already own a good gaming mouse & keyboard or will be upgrading to one quickly. So I see no reason for them to run the price of the computer up even higher on components that most are going to toss off to the side right away (I know I did). With 16gb of RAM and the latest generation i7 processor, everything happens fast. Boot up, programs, connections, ect. I have no complaints about the overall speed of it. I have not had any issues with dropping wi-fi signals, freezing up or crashing in any way. So far, it has been rock solid performance. I will be adding a second 16gb stick of RAM but it will be more for future proofing than anything else. Now as for the main selling point of this computer, the RTX 2080 graphics card, so far I have been very impressed. I have it hooked to a Samsung 29" curved wide panel monitor and it looks great. It's not a 4K monitor, but it looks good and I can't really see a need to go out and get a 4K. I can't say that I have done the most intense gaming with it just yet, but from what I have done I get the impression the 2080 will far exceed my needs for at least a few years. It has handled the several games I've tried so far with ease. Keeping an eye on the temps, it hasn't gotten overly hot yet. I know some are unhappy that there is no liquid cooling. But so far I haven't seen a need for it. Besides, this chipset isn't going to allow overclocking so I can't imagine you will need liquid cooling. But if you decide to ad it, that is yet another component that should be very easy to ad. The big thing about the 2080 is real-time ray tracing. As of right now, you are a bit limited on the number of games that can really make use of this. But as games improve over the next year or so, the ray tracing ability will show its worth. As for right now, be assured this card can take on any game you have right now with ease. Some of the previous reviews have mentioned an issue with a beeping problem when firing up the computer. I haven't had this happen even once. But as a few others have mentioned, this will only happen if you don't have the monitor turned on fist. It is really just a warning that the graphics card can't find an output source. I am a bit surprised this is catching so many people off guard. I can remember having a couple of computer from around 10 years ago that did the same thing. Anyways, it's not really a problem. Just turn your monitor on first. Also, some have mentioned the size of the power supply (500w). I know Nvidia suggest a 650w power supply for this card. But I'm thinking that recommendation is more for people buying just a graphics card and adding it to their systems. Without knowing exactly just what system these people are adding the card to, I suspect they are being overly cautious with the 650w suggestion. I'm pretty sure HP knows what they are doing :-) Graphics cards are becoming more efficient. Also, without the ability to overclock, the 500w should be just fine. For non-gaming use this is a fantastic computer. I do a lot of photography and I have been overjoyed with how fast it handles Photoshop and Lightroom. Faster than any computer I have ever used before. Now if you are looking at this computer but don't plan on gaming with it, I wouldn't buy it. If you are not into gaming the 2080 card doesn't really do anything for you. Almost half of the price tag is for the cost of the 2080 card alone (they sell for around $800!). So for a non gamer, you should be able to get into a equally as good machine (minus the 2080) for far less. But be assured that if you do buy this, there is nothing gaming or non-gaming that it can't do. Overall I am very, very happy with it. It is a pricey computer. But if you were to try and build an equally specified computer I don't think you could do it for cheaper than this. And if you are the type who wants to dig in and swap parts, you will have no problem doing so.

Classy Chassis & Mind-Boggling Graphics!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm going to keep this relatively short and sweet (for me at least). If you are in the market for a top-of-the-line gaming rig, look no further than the Omen Obelisk. If you want one that doesn't look like a neon factory threw up on what a 10-year old thinks is a 'rad' sci-fi design, then the Omen Obelisk is your breath of fresh air. Let me break it down: Design: Beautiful and understated. Can you dial in a bunch of different colors for the logo and the interior lighting, yes, but it looks absolutely gorgeous with the standard sinister red. I mean c'mon, dark black and a red glow, this thing is Darth Vader in a box! Yes Please! And like Vader the Obelisk slays in other ways as well... Graphics: OMG! I didn't really want to get Battlefield V because I really don't dig their move to the battle-royale style multiplayer but since it is the only game out there to really test out the ray-tracing of the GeForce 2080 in the Obelisk (and I found it on sale), I had to test it out. First things first though, make sure you get all the updates for the RTX 2080 and Battlefield first before playing it. I tried it before the latest patch came out and man did the frame rates take a hit with ray-tracing on! It was unbelievable with it off with the rates going over 100FPS but with it on I was seeing like 25FPS at times! With the new patch, it is rare that I have seen it go below 65FPS (BTW I'm running this rig on a Dell 24" G-Sync monitor at its native 2K resolution). That being said, I ended up turning ray-tracing off. Does ray-tracing make everything super-realistic, yes, but I'd rather have the processing overhead than flamethrower reflections in water. Included Peripherals: You aren't getting an awesome quality gaming keyboard or mouse with this thing but I have to say, it is one of the better keyboard (pack-ins) I've used. I actually took it to work because it is better than the piece of junk we have for our intern computer. The mouse is meh, but it does its thing (I had already given the interns a better mouse so this one just went back in the box). Upgradeability: HP did a great job on making the Obelisk easy to get in to and to upgrade. A single button press and the glass panel pops open and you have access to a neatly laid-out motherboard and bay configuration. I really appreciate that there isn't anything critical stuck behind the graphics card like on my last rig. You had to do a moderate amount of work to get it out just to get access to the SATA-III ports to plug in an additional hard drive. You have an open slot for an extra stick of RAM (a matching module is running about $125 online), and you have a single extra 3.5" bay and SATA-III plug. That being said, I'm not in any hurry to do an upgrade at this time. I ran BF5 just fine on the 16GB of RAM that was installed as base. The first upgrade I will probably make is to throw another SSD into the open bay but for right now it's nice just to know that it will be like a 5 minute job to do it. Software: A bit of bloatware but the HP tuning and management software is some of the most simple and easy to use that I have seen on a gaming system. Everything is straight-forward and obvious and it all runs without a hiccup, which I can't say about some other manufacturers. Slight rant though in case HP reads this: can you please not put silly little 'FarmVille' type games on this computer? I think it's pretty obvious that by getting the Obelisk I'm looking for something a bit more than photorealistic cows! *End Rant* OK, so maybe that went a bit longer than I had intended but it's hard not to gush about the Obelisk (and it was still shorter than many of my other reviews). If you are looking for a powerful pre-built gaming rig, you can't go wrong with the Obelisk. If you want one that is sexy as all get out while also slaying your games, then there is really no other choice. Either way, the Omen Obelisk is an outstanding rig, that you should not hesitate to purchase.

What a Beast
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was hoping to get this review out a little earlier, but life has been a little busy as of late. Enough talk - let's go. If you're looking at this PC, it's for one reason alone - gaming. This isn't the machine you recommend to your grandparents for checking Facebook or printing out coupons to Old Country Buffet. This thing is a workhorse. Intel i7 8700 16GB of DDR4 RAM Nvidia RTX 2080 w/8GB dedicated 250GB SSD for OS and apps 2TB SATA for storage Fit and finish are what you'd expect from a high-end gaming PC. The side panel is tempered glass vs plexiglass or acrylic. On the back, you have HDMI and DisplayPort outputs as well as several USB ports. On the front panel, you have two additional USB ports as well as headphone and mic jacks. I used Novabench as my benchmarking utility. It tests CPU, memory, disk and GPU and then shows how your PC compares to others instead of giving raw numbers that mean very little to the average consumer. It benchmarks better than the typical high-end gaming PC in overall, CPU and GPU tests. For gaming, I tested with iRacing which is a racing simulator. Using DisplayPort to my Acer XB272 at a 240Hz refresh rate, gaming was incredibly smooth. My monitor doesn't support 4K which would have been a lot of fun to really push it. As others have said, the power supply is a little weak in comparison to what Nvidia recommends. I didn't experience any issues, but it might come into play of adding additional disk or memory.

Great machine! Before returning, please read!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, this is an amazing machine! I don't want to repeat too much what others are already saying but this price point (Black Friday $1500) is one of the best deals you will find with the RTX 2080 graphics card. There was a local HP rep in my store and I even mentioned the concern w/ the 500W power supply and he was explaining to me that a lot of the cards/devices these days require a lot less power overall so that's why this is sufficient. One thing I want to point out is that before you return this due to beep codes, read the below on what I posted on others with the 3 long + 3 short beeping issues as well (since I experienced it as well): "So I bought this computer and didn't have this problem at first but all of a sudden it started as well. The good news is that it's an easy fix and the HP websites don't really help that much. If you are getting this problem, the solution is easy, simply power on your monitor/TV BEFORE you turn the PC on. I hooked mine up to a 4k resolution TV but prior to that, it was just a basic monitor. When I moved it over to the 4k TV, the same beep codes started almost immediately. The issue was that my TV is slower to power on than a normal TV/monitor and when you power on the PC, it wants to look for a display. These beep codes (3 long + 3 short) start because the computer thinks you don't have a display device attached. I went through suggestions on the HP website and re-seated the cards and it worked...until I went back to the same 4k display setup. To test this...I purposely left the HDMI cable disconnected on the previous (non-4k) devices and got the same result. FIX: As long as the display is on before powering on the device, you won't get the beeping. I hope this helps! It's a great machine over and love it! "

Really, really fast
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, let's get this out of the way right off. This is a really fast rig. The hexacore i7 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 make sure you won't be waiting for the Omen Obelisk to catch up to you, and you won't be wishing you could turn up the graphics on your favorite game. Combine that with a 256GB NVME SSD and there just isn't a faster mainstream option available. 16GB should be enough RAM for most everything, but since HP installed a single stick, you can always install another 16GB in the empty slot. Problem solved. I won't bore you with benchmarks and framerates. The nice thing about this computer is that you won't have to think about benchmarks and framerates. Not for a good while anyway. Bottom line? If you spend a lot of time browsing the internet and typing documents, save some money and get something cheaper. But, if you need a really fast computer for playing games at the highest graphics settings, you won't be disappointed with the Obelisk. Or if you do rendering at 4k, it just doesn't get much faster than this.
