Customers are saying
Customers consistently note the excellent performance and quiet operation of the OMEN Obelisk Gaming Desktop. Many appreciate its attractive case design and the relatively affordable price, especially during sales. However, some users express concerns regarding the cooling system, GPU performance, and the adequacy of the power supply. The limited RAM is also a point of contention for some buyers.

Beefy little beast, ultra slick presentation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always been a DIY PC guy. I like choosing my parts, picking out a case, and putting together everything nice and tidy. I've always looked down on prebuilts, recalling the days of pre-installed bundled bloatware, and limited customization options. That being said, I was quite impressed when I unboxed the HP Omen. Even more impressed at the restraint shown in pre-installed bloatware (though these days even a "clean" Windows install has a bunch of junk thrown in). Just McAfee (which I removed straight away), and some performance monitoring / lighting customization software. As an off the shelf gaming PC, this is a BEAST! First thing I ran after installing the latest updates and drivers was 3D Mark, a classic benchmarking software suite. Using the Time Spy benchmark test, my score went from 2336 (Ryzen 5 2400G & a GTX 770) to 9280 rocking the i7-8700 and RTX 2080. My Fire Strike benchmark score went from 6735 to 20610. Suitably impressed, I went on to install some games. Unfortunately, the "big deal" surrounding the RTX graphics card that this machine is built around requires games & software to support realtime raytracing. At present, only a handful of games support it. Another requirement is that you have Windows 10's October update, which has had a few high profile issues. So, while it's a little difficult to really show off what they hope is the future of video games, you can still run all of your current games with increased graphical fidelity. I ran some Overwatch on all Ultra settings, jumped into a game, and promptly lost, being distracted by all the beautiful effects that I missed out on playing on a lower graphics setting. In the box came a barebones mouse and keyboard. No fancy RGB lighting, all USB, they stayed in the box. The build quality of the machine itself is both admirable and frustrating. Taken by itself, it is a pristine build, beautiful inside and out with nary a loose cable. The RGB lighting is customizable, in case having your bedroom lit up all red at night like living in some kind of darkroom is your thing. You can have it set to any static color you can dream up, or have it pulse or cycle through various color palettes, both pre-selected and custom. It's not a large machine, dwarfed by the steel monster it currently sits by. The fans are surprisingly quiet, even when pushing the machine to its limits. The transparent side panel allows you to gape at the innards of the machine, and is easily removable. There is a spare drive bay and one open SATA port on the motherboard, and one spare RAM slot, and that's it. I tired in vain to find another open anything, USB header, PCI slot, anything. Missing headers with gray bubbles where they should be indicated a lot of the stuff was soldered to the board, presumably the front panel headers and whatnot, which meant harvesting the motherboard to stick into your own case was out of the question. The included HDD is 2 TB, which is adequate for storing some of the larger games of this generation, but not for the huge libraries of a data hoarder like me, so I've been deliberating on removing it alltogether and popping in a pair of 8TB drives just so I don't have to transfer things when it eventually fills up, though with the way external SSD's are progressing, maybe in the near future I won't have to mess about. If what you're looking for is a solid gaming PC wiht the latest tech that you don't have to think about, you'd be hardpressed to find a better option. While the upgrading is limited to storage and RAM, if you're going to be tinkering around in there or have a specific use case other than racking up frags (do the kids even say that anymore?), you're probably building your own PC anyways, and even then you'd still be impressed with what the HP Omen packs.

A Beast of a Gaming System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Omen by HP gaming desktop really is a powerful system out of the box at a pretty good price considering the nvidia RTX 2080 GPU inside that is on the laser cutting edge of GPU design. Out of the box, the Omen has a very nice fit and finish. The tower casing is black and angular. I typically find the gaming systems a little too flashy for my taste. The Omen is actually well balanced. I find the angular design quite nice with an illuminated logo on the front and a transparent side panel to show off all the high end equipment on the inside. The interior lighting and the front logo can be customized to your liking (separately) with an array of colors and animations via the Omen Command Center pre-installed software. As I mentioned, I find most gaming systems a little much. Sometimes that includes size as most gaming desktops are full towers. The Omen is a mid-tower which means a couple of things... It takes up less space and to me is more pleasing to the eye, but also means it is more compact and thus has less available space on the inside. More on that later. Once unpacked, you just plug in the power cord, attach all of your peripherals and push the power button. Make sure that your display is turned on or you'll get a loud beeping alert from the GPU indicating it cannot detect a display. I don't personally have a problem with this since I rarely turn off my display. The 256 GB SSD boot drive ensures a blazing fast startup although I feel like this drive could've been bigger. Even then, 256 is more than likely sufficient for most of us especially given the 2 TB HDD. Since this is a gaming PC, why not try some games? I recently purchased Battlefield V and boy what a pleasure! I haven't really been into hardcore gaming for over a decade, but I can tell you this setup and this game have reignited my fire. I wanted to try Battlefield V because it takes advantage of the capabilities of the GPU which includes Raytracing. If you don't know what it is, go watch some YouTube videos that demo it. In a nutshell, Raytracing allows for super accurate lighting, reflections, and shadows during game play. You really don't realize how fake something looks until you play a game with Raytracing and then experience it without it. Seriously, it's an immersive experience. Even then, you can max out all the graphics settings and The Omen handles it with ease--although the fans do rev up when even moderate graphics usage but that is to be expected. Since this is a mid-tower and not a full tower, options to expand are somewhat limited, but not non-existent and also not unexpected. That being said, I really think this PC will keep you satisfied and fulfill all your gaming needs for years to come. It's also super easy to swap out a hard drive or add some RAM. It ships with a single stick of 16 GB RAM with an additional slot should you decide that you need it. There are no free PCI slots and one SATA-3 connector, but again. Easy enough to swap out something if you need to upgrade at a later date. In conclusion, I am really impressed with the Omen by HP--especially the nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. It really is something special. I also really enjoy being able to customize the interior and logo lighting (including disabling) as it adds a cool vibe to my office. Is this system the mother of all gaming PCs with unlimited expansion possibilities? No. But it is a top contender as far as capabilities go and a very reasonable price. Anyone who has been into gaming knows these systems can cost you a fortune so I think this one is a bargain. The included keyboard and mouse are about as basic as basic gets, but I'm sure they expect that most serious gamers will already have that on hand. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a very serious gaming desktop, doesn't need or want a full tower, and who wants to be able to show up their friends with their smaller, but more capable PC. Pros: *Size *Exterior design & lighting *GPU *Price Cons: *Limited expandability *Could've benefited from a larger fan/better ventilation

Been a solid performer for our family
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased on Black Friday (Nov 2018). This review is from Feb 2019. Had no issues with the unit. Runs everything we've thrown at it just fine. Using with a 1440 monitor. Sons play Fortnite, Rainbow, Skyrim, other games at max settings. Seems to run a little hot at times but that hasn't been an issue. Used several hours each day and has shown no issues so far! We were looking for a prebuilt system that checked the boxes for mid-high range gaming. We don't care about driving 4K or similar. This system can be upgraded, but we feel good about it at least for the next year or two.

2nd Go Around Good So Far
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I initially purchased this model with issues arising in games. The PC kept rebooting after starting up or playing games for a short while. I worked with Omen support, who was very good by the way, and after much troubleshooting on the software side of things we determined there must be a hardware issue. My guess is potentially the GPU transitioning to an intensive workload and/or a faulty PSU requiring a jump in power and failing. Either way, I returned the PC for a new one and no issues with that thus far, although it's only been a few days. I insisted on giving this PC another try with the BlackFriday deal. Can't beat that with the RTX 2080. I plan on upgrading the PSU and potentially the cooling with the GPU running at 85C in most games. Overall a solid, powerful PC for the price.

2 back to back hardware failures
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought on a Black Friday special in 2018. PC worked OK for 3 days then in the middle of the third day began getting BIOS beeps on power up and no monitor output. Three long low tones followed by three short higher tones, repeating 5 times total. Online research indicated a hardware issue potentially the Graphic card or RAM. For this original unit I was online to Geek Squad troubleshooting who recommended taking the unit into the Geek Squad counter in store which I did. Their recommendations were to exchange the unit for new as they agreed this was a hardware issue. I picked up a new unit from another store as they were out of stock locally. The replacement unit performed exactly the same way on the first power up. I went online to HP to troubleshoot the issue thinking there must be something I am doing incorrectly since both PC's failed. Granted I am 55 with a lifetime of PC experience and although a longshot I gave it a try. HP requested I unplug and re-seat the graphic card (resulted in no change) and likewise with the RAM when the graphic card re-seating did not help. Neither attempt resolved the issue. I inquired as to the suspected issue and I was informed it likely indicates a part on the motherboard has failed. I understand from independent inquiries HP makes this motherboard themselves. I confirmed I had the American Megatrends BIOS for those interested. Once I determined there were two failures and likely both were motherboard issues I decided to return both and source an IBuyPower equivalent. I personally opted to steer away from this HP product as HP did not offer a solution (despite asking) and they were unwilling to offer another product in spite of my issues. I outright asked if this was a known issue and did not receive a reply. In my opinion they have an issue known to be a problem but are unwilling to admit this due to potential bad press. I wanted to put this out there so if anyone has similar issues now or in the future possibly they can point to this and receive additional help. Good Luck!

Great Buy!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: - RTX 2080 in a $1500 dollar rig? Yes please. The card alone is worth half the computer, and the RTX series should have great longevity in the future. I run every game so far at max settings and the GPU is settling around 75°C. - Solid CPU in the i7-8700. Not too fancy but good base clock speed. Every game I've run so far at max settings has only put the CPU at about 50% utilization max, settling around 78°C. - Comes with a mouse/keyboard (if you don't care about peripherals) - Overall a great machine, currently running games like Fortnite on Epic settings @ 100+ FPS. Cons: - Micro ATX motherboard has very limited upgrade potential. Unfortunate, but with the processor and GPU definitely outweighs this - No overclocking on the processor. Personally don't use it but might be a con to some people - PSU is barely enough to run the rig @ 500W. This isn't a huge issue since the processor can't be overclocked, but the HP Edoras motherboard doesn't have proprietary plug ins so this is upgradable for less than $100 If you're on the fence about it, I'd recommend 100%. You'd be very hard pressed to put this rig together for $1500 or less, if it isn't impossible. I paired this with a Dell S2716DGR with G-Sync (which is almost 50% on sale right now) and the pair is incredible for ~$2000 after tax.

Great deal, has GPU issue
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was a terrific $500 off deal for a PC with these specs, and for 3 days I was super pleased. Then the RTX2080 developed graphic artifact lines across the screen (same as another reviewer here). After an hour call with HP support it was determined the vidcard is bad (obviously). They have offered to replace the card but did not have it in stock, and I am waiting on a del eta yet. Since the nearest BB store is over 100m from me I would prefer to just replace the card instead of exchanging the whole PC via shipping/driving. I did not have the 3L:3S beep error until I removed the 2080 and replaced it with an older GT730. Everyone that got this error says turn on the montior before bootup, but my monitor was on and still got the beep code. Research shows the beep error indicated the graphics card failed to initialize in a timely fashion. I did a hard reset (power off, unplug, hold power button for 10s) and that fixed it. The PC is now runing fine with the GT730 card. Overall I am pleased with my purchase, and HP support is doing their job to replace a faulty card. This is a super fast gaming PC but sadly the latest gen Nvidia card still has some kinks to work out. At the current price of $2k I would not recommend this PC, but would instead look for a GTX1080TI desktop.

A little worried at first
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ok so i was a little worried at first because people where saying that the gpu runs pretty hot . My rtx 2080 ran up to 53c which is which is about 127f degrees which after doing some research is normal temperature and that was with me play world of warcraft at close to maxed out settings . Also the cpu temperature didnt go above 68 Celsius which is also to my knowledge normal aswell . And as other reviewers wrote about the 3 long beeps then 3 short beeps which i didnt have that problem at all because i allready have my monitor on in the first place . One last thing i will say is that this computer is a beast and i bought it on sale when it was 500$ off and couldnt be any happier . Also thank you best buy for giving me free next day delivery

Excellent value when on sale
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i picked this up during memorial weekend, decided to get the open box for a little over $1300 after tax. the video card itself cost $800 retail. like everyone saids, its not great in the cooling department but by adding a Corsair H60 water cooler and installing precision X1 with appropriate fan curve, this thing is a beast. For most best buy customers who want just a plug and play machine, this might not be for you but for everyone who is comfortable opening up a PC case, this is a steal.

The GPU issue is a big problem for VR system.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The GPU problem is a nightmare for VR players, since I can NOT open my oculus headset before open the tower's power. Because oculus headset need hdmi to connect, it's also a monitor! That means when I take off my headset, the GPU will cause the mentioned error and made the main monitor flash.(I use display port to connect my 4K monitor, and the only hdmi port used to connect the oculus.)

Issues to be Addressed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So as an owner of this PC after buying it on black friday, I have a few issues that I wanted to address. 1. My CPU fan is crooked. --I haven't noticed any performance issues related to this or any issues with performance at all. However, I was worried that the fan being crooked might present a overheating issue for my CPU. Although, I noticed that yours is also crooked so maybe this is how it comes from the factory and nothing to worry about. 2. Audio problem in games. --So this one is harder to explain... When playing FPS games (Fortnite, COD Black Ops 2) I noticed that a noise I can best describe as a screech or squeal occurs when I plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack. The noise is REDUCED when capping framerate and lowering graphics settings. My idea is this could be caused by the graphics card? Need insight on this one. 3. Reoccuring connection timeout during FPS games. --While playing Fortnite and COD: Black Ops 2 (I haven't tested it in other games yet as this started happening today..) every one minute or so I get a connection timeout where I am disconnected for about 3 seconds and then reconnected. This causes me to die almost every time I play because during fights I am killed by being forcibly disconnected to this issue. I have never had problems with my router/modem/wifi connection and am intrigued by the fact that it consistently reoccurs every minute. ---I hope I provided enough information and hope that I was clear with my issues. Please feel free to comment any ideas on how I can fix this. I bought this PC from Best Buy. Overall this computer is great, I just need to get these issues resolved and I'll be one HAPPY camper. Thanks!

Very defective + bad customer service
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I do not typically take the time to write a review, however I decided I should write one up in this case as a warning. I am not a computer expert, which is why I opted to buy a prebuilt in the first place. I bought this model on black Friday and "saved" 500 dollars. My more tech savy friend had said that this model at $1500 dollars was a pretty good deal, as the graphics card alone ranged from 700-800 bucks. The only thing that made me hesitant were some reviews on best buy's website that warned of the computer having a beep code error when trying to boot up. I decided to take my chances and purchase it, thinking I wouldn't be one of the unlucky ones. After waiting for several days for it to be delivered to the store, I was excited to pick it up and get it setup in my media room. I made all the needed connections and the computer booted up like a champ. I went through the initial setup of windows, cortana, and downloaded several of my games. By the time everything had downloaded and updated I had to shut the computer down, due to the need for sleep. When going to turn the computer on the following day I got the beep code the bad reviews had warned about (3 short beeps followed by 3 long beeps). It continued to beep and not boot up. I brought it back to the store and informed the return desk, followed by a store supervisor of my problem. They exchanged it out for an identical model. I brought it home thinking bad luck wouldn't strike twice. I was wrong. Same exact issue. Back to the store I went, let down and disappointed. I talked to the return desk and supervisor once more. I let them know I really wanted a working computer which is why I spent 1500 dollars +tax in the first place. However I was done going back and forth and wanted to return it. One of the employees said that they had just got a new shipment and said if I tried to exchange it once more I would likely not end up with part of the same bad batch. Foolishly I exchanged it once more. Brought it home, and just like you would expect same issue. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on me. I brought it back and returned it for good. I never want to see an HP omen again. The icing on the cake however is due to me exchanging the computer twice... upon returning it... Best buy gave me a notice stating I am no longer allowed to return anything in their store for a year. What a joke! I spent 1650 dollars on one of their high end gaming computers. They sent me home multiple times with a computer that did not work... and to top it off hit me with a return ban. The return ban is basically them banning me from their store and penalizing me for buying faulty products. Why would anybody buy expensive electronics or any product for that matter if 1) the store is known to sometimes sell defective products. and 2) the store will no longer allow you to utilize the standard return policy. When I asked the employees why I could no longer return things, he responded by saying it was due to my return history. The only thing I returned in the last couple years was the exchanging of the defective PC. Buyer beware. Extremely dissatisfied with both the HP omen and Best Buy.

Atrocious setup and awful customer service
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At first glance, this is it. The high spec pc you've been waiting for. Until you power it on and put the GPU through some minor gaming and then everything just falls apart. Freezes, crashing, overheating and shutdown. Then you find out that someone at HP decided that it was a good idea to install a 500w power supply into a case housing a RTX 2080 video card! Then call HP and customer service is about as fulfilling as watching a snail attempt to paint your entire house. I returned this awful machine.

Very happy with this PC!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my teenage grandson as a Christmas gift, along with a G-SYNC monitor, in November of this year. He opened it on Christmas Eve and hooked it up. I've been watching the comments since that time, so fortunately I knew about the beeping sequence if you don't turn the monitor on first. Thanks to all who posted about that. He streams a lot of online games from Steam. I watched him play Doom the other night - the gameplay was very smooth and graphics stunning - the detail was so impressive. So far, we are both very happy with this purchase. He says it's the best Christmas he's ever had. I haven't seen him come out of his room very much since Christmas Eve...lol. I have to admit my gift to him was a bit selfish - I wanted him off of my gaming PC. He got an Alienware gaming laptop last year, but he much prefers the PC now. It has only been four days, but so far so good. We can deal with the beeping issue just fine - no biggie.

Constant crashes while gamimg
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this PC with the intention of gaming a lot on it. Wasn't having problems for the first few days then everything changed... I can't play a game for more than 30 minutes without it saying "GPU has been lost" or "Can't render, closing application." Its really frustrating and I don't know what's causing it...

Crashes
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Computer was fine for a month or two and then all the sudden crashes any time I play a graphically intense video game. Looking over all the reviews it seems to be a common theme. Assuming it's either due to a crappy batch of GPU's or the PSU doesn't have enough juice to support the rest of the computer.

Beeping on startup.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve been reading the other reviews, and it seems everyone has this issue. I have been gaming just fine on it so I’m unsure if there’s actually an issue at all. Games are running great, but if the beeping is in all of the builds I doubt they are all errors.

Doesn't last
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this just over a year ago and use it only to teach English online. It took a long time (months) for a driver update to be found that could fix the randomly blacking out screen (everything else worked but all I could see was black). After that, it worked well for about 6 months. Now it shuts off and doesn't restart for several minutes. This happened four times this morning and it had only been running for maybe 10 minutes when it stopped. This much money and it barely lasted a year.
