Customers are saying

Customers consistently note the excellent performance and quiet operation of the OMEN Obelisk Gaming Desktop. Many appreciate its attractive case design and the relatively affordable price, especially during sales. However, some users express concerns regarding the cooling system, GPU performance, and the adequacy of the power supply. The limited RAM is also a point of contention for some buyers.

    3:3 Beeps w/ solutions

Bought this at $1,500, a very good deal but not great. I will cover why its not great after we go over the 3:3 beeps; the disclaimer is that what worked for me may not work for you. BOTTOM LINE IS: I GOT THE 3:3 BEEPS and I am typing this review on the same computer :) So I read a few reviews here with the 3:3 beeps GPU error, but it looked like others had found solution(s). This GPU came out earlier 2018 and many drivers are still being push out to rid the bugs. Nvidia is the pioneer to gaming graphics, the company isn’t a new kid on the block…I started using Nvidia GPUs since GeForce 2 lol. For the price, I decided to give it a shot because I have total faith in Nvidia. I also bought a Dell 27" QHD GSync Monitor S2716DGR. **FROM THIS POINT ON IF I PUT (!) next to something, that means it had to do with the 3:3 Beeps**** Once I received the PC and monitor, I setup the monitor with the included 1.2 DisplayPort (!), and turned on the monitor first ( just like others who have suggested). Did not get the beeps and everything worked fine. Once I completed the tedious HP Setup, I immediately updated my BIOS and GPU driver: BIOS Update: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00007682 GPU Update: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/geforce-experience/ Restarted computer, everything was still working perfectly. Finally, I did a benchmark on the PC and noticed the RAM is only subpar based on the tests, so I bought another Hyperx Fury 16GB DDR 4 RAM. Two days later, I received the RAM in the mail. I inserted the RAM into the motherboard and powered it back up. It was at this point, I realized I did not turn on my monitor(!) and received my fair share of 3 long beeps and 3 rapid beeps (!). I initiated all of the solutions that were listed here and other HP Forums but nothing worked: -Reseated both of RAM sticks -Unplugged everything from the computer, to include power -Let the beeps run its cycles until it stops, and then powered down -Multiple power down and power up -Disabled Secured Boot and Enable Legacy Boot (a solution I found on forum that worked for some). This got rid of the beeps but did no fix the blank screen. For a second, I started to get worried like most of you…I though I got a lemon. But I decided to persevere and look at other options. This is where most of you made the mistake and decided you have a bad machine based on the reviews and “HP totally screwed this one up”; a bias you have created for yourself. I steered away from the PC and started looking into my monitor. I plugged in a HDMI port to see if I can trick the GPU in finding the monitor (!)…WAAAA LAA! Computer booted up and everything worked. So I plugged the DisplayPort back in and restarted my computer….the terrifying 3:3 beeps again!! Switched back to HDMI, and worked again(!) Tried leaving both wires in and unplugging HDMI (leaving DisplayPort in) after the computer booted up. Only blank screen. I was not about to settle with only HDMI working because it caps the monitor at only 60hz. Finally, after messing with the monitor, I noticed there was an input switch setting on my monitor (!) , guess what…it was switched to HDMI. I immediately unplugged the power from my monitor, turned it back on, and switched the input to DisplayPort (!) . It was at this point, I gave it another try. I plugged ONLY the DisplayPort in and computer booted up..and everything woked. This is not the root of the problem, please read my summary below SUMMARY: Computer was working with DisplayPort. At one instance, I forgot to turn on the monitor prior to powering the computer. GPU subsequently stopped detecting my monitor, causing the 3:3 beeps. I plugged in a HDMI cable to trick the monitor into booting, and it did; However, this changed my monitor setting to display HDMI. Finally, I unplugged the monitor from power for a hard reset (not sure if that matters). I powered the monitor back on and switch the input to DisplayPort. Turned the computer on and everything worked. I agree, we purchased a brand new computer with the latest technologies, we expect it to function. However, understand new technologies = bugs. If you don’t mind this buggy problem, please return. I am no computer expert but I think this is just a bug Nvidia/HP needs to fix. Documenting reviews on what you tried (work or not) will help them do their audits when developing the new BIOS update/GPU Driver. Anyways, I will keep the rest of my review short and sweet. The extra 16GB of RAM made some good difference but the computer was pretty fast to begin with. Also the CPU Fan is crap, spend 50 bucks and get you a better cooler (you don’t need liquid cool, because you’re not overclocking this CPU)…just know that you will probably want a low profile cooler due to limited space in this Omen case. The powersupply is fine, I know Nvidia recommends 600W but there were tests done by users and the GPU utilized ~300W at full cap and ultra settings (for what its worth). For $1500, can’t beat it. But I would not pay $1,999 unless it included faster RAM @ 32GB, 700W GPU, better cooling, and a bigger case for future upgrade.

I got the amazing Black Friday deal at $1500. Which if you didn’t you should consider other options. Well let me start off with the beeping problem. I hooked up everything as instructed and a 4K monitor as well. Powered it on and got the 3-3 beep error. I thought I had to return it. I let the cycle go on until the computer powered off. (3 cycles). By this time my monitor powered off by itself and I powered the computer again. Wala!! Anyway I wanted to play for a couple of days before posting anything. I’ve been running PUBG high 50fps at 4k without any trouble. Very impressive!! A little high temps at 85c, but not over heating. The GPU does not support over clocking though. However you can run a program to accomplish this. The only ONE issue that is driving me insane. At first the LED letters in the GPU were lit up bright green. They’ve turn off and will not turn back on! I’m still giving this a five as this seems to be a problem with the GPU cards and the HP. Hope there’s a fix to this problem or will return to get that fixed.

I was a little hesitant at first due to the smallish power supply and it being air cooled. After much research on this pc and it being on sale I went ahead and made the investment. For the price of cant be beat. The 2080 alone almost makes it worth the price. The SSD is a little small but guess what...this pc was build to be upgraded. Very smart build inside. Out of the box can handle the average gamer. But if you want to upgrade it is easy to do. The Omen Command Center is nice but wish it had a few more options such as adjusting temperature to farenheit. And maybe a widget. Overall very satisfied with this HP. Now I just need to find more time to be on it.

A great prebuilt with some compromises. I got lucky and purchased an open box version at a steep discount and used the RTX 2080 in my personal rig and set this up as a secondary rig for my girlfriend. For people who don't want to build a system themselves this is a good product, but for those that know how to build a system you could get much more bang for the buck doing it yourself without the compromises. Pros: -No assembly required -Will play any AAA game Cons: -Heatsink is cheap and the CPU runs hot when gaming. If you want to replace the heatsink in most cases you will have to remove the entire motherboard out of the case because there isn't an opening on the backside like most new PC cases offer -The case is relatively small and doesn't allow for much customization such as adding additional fans. You can definitely do it, but you have to get creative. -1 stick of ram, meaning you're not utilizing dual channel -The video card is a blower style card, so also runs hot. Definitely want to get better airflow in the case to help with this

The reasons I didnt give it 5 stars: The motherboard has no expansion slots for PCI Express...and only 2 RAM slots. I would expect that more for a budget build gaming rig. For the extra minor cost to put a full sized mother board, would have made it possible to upgrade a lot and make the system pretty high end. The boot drive SSD is very small... I end up with shortage issues...even just using system type applications. This 1 is important ...so pay attention. The onboard software for handling the Graphics card is dreadful. Download MSI free version of Afterburner. If you don't, you will have an oven on your hands. For the components it has... it's pretty good at that price, ..or it was in 2018...I just wish it was more upgradable. Once my extended warranty is expired I may just build my own like I used to do. New motherboard, bigger power supply, faster CPU...some form of cooling.

Bought this computer on a Black Friday sale in 2018, everything came installed correctly and worked great straight out of the box. Some pros and cons definitely come with a pre built gaming pc. Pros: everything came pre installed for ease of use, 2080 RTX GPU card runs just about any game, even usually into the triple digit FPS, and the cables are even pretty cleanly managed. Cons: the i7-8700(non k) CPU is pretty fast and great for multitasking but can bottleneck gaming performance as it can’t be overclocked, the 16gb ram is only 1 stick so it’s not dual-channel memory but can be easily upgraded to 2 sticks, and the cooling fans are kind of lackluster. Overall, if you’re not familiar / comfortable building your own gaming pc, this is a great rig for most. But if you can muster up some courage to build your own you can get better performance for cheaper / same price.

Terrible airflow, RTX 2080 GPU kept overheating

I bought this during the Black Friday sale when it was on sale for $1500 and had to return it after a few days. The case unfortunately has horrendous airflow and the 2080 kept hitting the upper 80's limit the GPU could handle (per nVidia's website that's 88C) and the system would reset, as you can see it reaching 86 just before a reboot in the attached pic. If you're willing to make the modifications and add additional cooling you might be able to get the GPU's temperature down to the manageable range, but it's absurd that a $2000 MSRP computer can't handle what it's intended for out of the box. Keep that in mind before you consider purchasing one.

I buy HP stuff all the time. I like my Omen laptop. But this PC is not built right. The power supply seems inadequate, and is below what is recommended for a 2080. And the cooling is SO inadequate. Any game makes this machine freeze up. Games that aren't graphically intense or older games, will still cause artifacts to appear on the screen, and then it will lock up completely for 60 seconds or so. Sometimes until you do a hard restart on it. When it does this, the back of the GPU, where the hdmi or display port cables are plugged in, is burning hot to the touch! You can watch the temperature climb in the Omen Dashboard, and as soon as it hits a certain temp, the crash will happen. I knew when I saw a 2080 in a desktop for $1500, that it was probably too good to be true, but I chanced it because I like the HP Omen stuff. I knew the other parts would probably be cheap (they are), but I was ok with that. But unfortunately, it will never work the way it is built. Returning it to Best Buy.

I would not have purchased this PC at full price; however, when on sale, it is cheaper than buying the components separately and building your own PC. It comes with a single stick of 16GB DDR4 RAM. Although 16GB is enough for modern gaming, using a single stick robs the system of efficiencies gained by utilizing a dual channel RAM setup. For this reason, I bought an additional, identical 16G stick and installed it. I also added a cooling fan to the top of the box. I am a little concerned about the CPU temps on this PC. The temps are below the threshold aloud by the manufacturer, but they are higher than I’d like to see for sustained, long term use. I will eventually install a more robust cooling system to bring CPU temps down. The only other thing I want to do to this PC right now is to install a larger SSD for games. The system comes with a 256GB SDD, where the OS resides, and a 2 TB 7200 RPM storage option, where I store my games. The standard 2TB drive is sufficient, but I’d like to take advantage of faster load times that an SSD would provide. Overall, I am happy with this PC. It’s critical to pair it with a capable monitor that can deliver the true nature of the graphics that the RTX2080 is capable of delivering. If you can find this PC on sale and pair it with the right monitor, you will have a very capable gaming PC on your hands at a reasonable and fair price.

First impressions: I got this on a Black Friday early access deal. I’d been searching for a gaming pc for a while but cost for what I wanted was an issue. I stumbled on this deal and though it wasn’t exactly what I wanted it really is an awesome deal for a pretty great gaming pc. No it’s not top tier but the gpu alone is a nice boost. I just hooked it up last night and everything seems to work great out of the box. I haven’t gotten a chance to use it intensively yet though. I need to get some gameplay time in to fully evaluate it. It’s a nice looking tower too (better than Alienware imo and more space for upgrading). Two cons so far: Mouse (and keyboard). Plan to replace them ASAP. They’re awful, especially the mouse. For a very nice gaming pc to come with such garbage is a shame. These are basically very low end everyday peripherals I wouldn’t even purchase for work. Thankfully Black Friday deals are still going so I was able to order something better without going broke. Second, the HP OMEN Command Center app seems to be a bit finicky. It controls the tower lighting and gives tower stats like temp. The app malfunctions after the pc has been on for a while and either crashed or wouldn’t change lighting options. Had to restart to use it properly. Hopefully HP will fix this with software updates. All in all I’m pretty happy with my purchase so far.

It comes loaded with a powerful RTX 2080. Also a 500w PSU that I feel should be a 850w at least. The only other complaint is it just has 2 RAM slots. I'm able to run WoW in 4k at 165hz on ultra and still have over 100 fps on the busiest server and cities. Also in destiny 2 fps was over 140. Highly recommend this PC. Got it on sale for 1699.99

This PC is amazing. It can handle any game I throw at it with ease and is also great for productivity use as well. I am impressed by the performance I get from this beast very much. My only issue is an obvious one that others have complained about which is thermals. Yes the CPU and GPU do get ridiculously hot at an unacceptable level. A work around this issue is downloading MSI afterburner and cranking the fan settings to 70 to lower GPU thermals. After doing this I maintain fair temps for my GPU. Now for the CPU, it is easy to water cool it to fix that issue as well. After doing these things you are left with a PC that has decent temps while gaming. Only issue now is that your PC will sound loud(not jet engine loud) which is why I plan on water cooling the GPU as well later down the road to get a more quiet system. It also helps to upgrade the PSU as the 500W preinstalled is not desirable. I purchased this PC for $1399 which is an amazing value. The water cooling and PSU upgrade are $200 extra which still makes the entire package worth it. I just noticed that the price is back to $1899 which is not worth it at that point. If it doesn’t drop again to a more reasonable price don’t get it and look else where. Overall, it’s a great PC that just needs a few tweaks in its thermals to have a great experience.

CPU cant be overclocked. The motherboard is lame. Ram expansion is not possible due two only having 2 slots. The GPU is a blower style that runs extremely loud and hot. Intel stock fan heatsink is lame. NVME drive is snappy for what it is. RGB looks cool. If youre looking for a great gaming computer this is a good option. If youre looking to overclock or stream it is not a good option. For the price youre paying you should have at least some of these features. Check out the iBuyPower BBY953 instead. Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I do have to say that the other reviews about thermals for this PC are unfortunately true. I found that the GPU was not cooling itself off efficiently, and was ultimately resulting in too much hot air circulating in the case. For some reason, I found that the GPU fan was not going over an average of 50rpms. I speculate that this was intentional as to not have such a loud PC. I was able to download software to correct this and installed a liquid cooling CPU and the thermals dropped dramatically. Installing the liquid cooling unit was a bit of a task due to no rear access on this case; however, the design takes into consideration upgrades quite nicely. Other than the aforementioned, this PC boasts some excellent cable management, and makes upgrades\expansions a breeze! This is very beneficial to me as I consider my PC building skills intermediate at best. If it were not for the thermals this PC would easily get 5 stars from me, and I would definitely recommend this PC to a friend.

Great and fast PC, but compatibility for upgrades is limited. CPU mounting bracket will not take push pin design heat-sinks unless you want to replace the mounting bracket (This means you have to take apart the whole motherboard to do so). Beware of heat-sink height you want to use because this case leaves very little room to fit any tall heat-sinks. I tried installing an EVGA 750W G2 only for the motherboard to not startup. The case will not properly fit any PSU that is longer than 6.3 inches in length unless you want to leave the PSU not screwed in. The back side of the case also leaves very little room for cable management. Almost couldn't close the metal side panel with the EVGA PSU due to the fact that the cables were larger. Can't recommend this PC to anyone that will apply any upgrades to this PC. It's hard to find parts that will fit and still be compatible with the proprietary motherboard without taking a risk and chance of it not working. A few years down the road, I will be definitely be replacing the case, motherboard, and finally putting my new-brought PSU to use. For $1500, this was a lot of trouble and barely worth getting.

This is my first gaming computer though I dont game much but I like the horsepower this came with, I did upgrade the memory and SSD because I needed the space and memory since I edit photos and my have several applications open and running at one time. When I have it loaded up and heavy processing this thing has not missed a beat or any slow downs. It's is nice to be able to take advantage of both wired and wireless IP connections at the same time but sometimes it hurts more than it helps it just depends, I didnt know it had that option until after I purchased it so it is a nice to have but not necessary for me. But I do recommend this system

I bought this on the black Friday deal. At $1500 the deal seemed too good to be true. Turns out it was. First unit I got had multiple crashes within minutes of playing ANY game. It seemed to either be a bad gpu or power supply issues as effectively the RTX 2080 would hardware crash. I returned it to Best Buy, that process was simple enough as my local store had it in stock. The 2nd unit seemed light years better than the first. No crashes at all the first couple days with pretty intense gaming sessions, until last night. In the middle of a game I got the same crash as the first go around. Only this time it was worse. The PC completely crashed and then would not boot back up at all. It would power up, but never get to Windows. I left it alone over night. This morning it finally booted, but there were graphic artifact lines all over the screen. I'm wondering if this was a black Friday deal because someone at either the retailer or manufacturer knew these have a high failure rate and wanted them off the shelves. Just a hunch, but you can't get an RTX + i7 (not to mention SSD + HHD) at $1500 anywhere else on Black Friday. It's a deal too good to be true, at least for the units I got.
