I'm disappointed. The volume changes depending on programming. Even from one TV show to another,This is very irritating. I have a Denon receiver in my media room and it does not behave the same way. I wish I had bought another Denon.

esay set up, the network hook up was easy as 1,2,3 love the idea of streaming my music from my laptop or phone, especially at this price. it has 140 watts per channel which i thought was going to be more than enough, but as it turns out i was wrong, you have to crank it up to 50 to hear any surround effects, and all of them sounded the same except full stereo which actually sounded better. i took it back because the subwoofer channel was blown, but was so disappointed with what this receiver, didnt sound like

Bought the received based on sales persons recommendation. Seemed to have everything needed, Bluetooth, Airplay ect. Stopped playing sound within a week. After troubleshooting with Onkyo they told me to send it in for repair or return it. That is where the real disappointment came in BestBuy only has a 15 day return policy and I was on day 18. That was a real disappointment compared to other companies who have at least 30. So now I wait for the next few weeks to have it repaired an returned

started sounding like alvin and the chipmunks had taken over the output randomly..calibration was easy, but the constant high pitched sitortion problem was to much..returned immediately and got a denon

    Amazing preamplifier in this unit...

Bought two units because it has 384Khz/32 bit DACs. A friend also bought this unit on my recommendation and he thanked me for saving him $1000 (he was considering a NAD integrated amp). I modified one unit to pull the preamp outputs to feed my external amplifiers and speakers (Classe 401 and Rotel, 4 Bose 901 for front, 2 Bang and Olufsen for side, 2 Martin Logan for back and Definitive for center) and other I am using to drive two low powered so so speakers, which b.t.w sound amazing with this unit compared to the previous Technics amp. Let me say that the sound from this unit's preamp outputs is better than that produced by the Classe SSP-300 ($4500) that it replaced. Low amplitude sounds are extremely clear and are not drowned in noise. In addition, now I have cleaned up my audio-video cables. Classe SSP-300 did not have HDMI so I was using bunch of switch boxes to switch audio and video among Oppo player, Xbox 360, Apple TV, DirecTV, DVD jukebox, Cassette jukebox, Turntable, HD DVD player, CD recorder etc etc. This unit has tons of inputs both HDMI and RCA stereo audio. Anyone who wants a pre-amp upgrade from old high end pre-amp, have a look at this unit, it is a hidden gem. The only thing is that holes would have to be drilled on the side to mount 7 RCA connectors and minimal soldering is required, a couple of hours and you will not be disappointed. Use shielded wire to solder between the points on the board and the RCA connectors (remember to connect only one end of the shield to chasis). many thumbs up...

    First 7.1 experience

I didn't do a lot of research into actually buying this set, I was more like... "oh hey! 7.1 speakers for my receiver" and "oh wow! Look at that not bad price" and I got them. Was not prepared for the actual size of the speakers, they ended up being huge, at least compared to my old HTIAB set up. Since then I've been able to hook them up and have been more than impressed of the quality, I'm not shy in giving my system a workout here and there, been playing the very best reference quality Blu-Ray/4K content on stern levels and noticed clarity and no distortion at all, and the subwoofer flat out rocks! This is a fantastic 7.1 speaker system!

If you want a receiver that will work like it should, this receiver is for you! I started with a Denon which was very similar in details. The Denon didn't work. Pandora app doesn't work with Denon and app locks up. This Onkyo works perfectly. The sound is awesome and the two zones is great. I can listen to Pandora out by the pool, while others can listen to the radio inside. I love this Onkyo!!!

this is a great receiver for my home theater system. Beware that last year's Oknyo line had known HDMI board issues but hoping they corrected the issue with the latest models considering they had to replace a large number under warranty for last year's models.

    Wanted to Love It, But....

After buying a Sony 4K/3D television months ago, I've been itching to upgrade our sound system with an equivalent-quality 4K/3D receiver. I’ve always heard good things about Onkyo technology and I loved the simple, elegant appearance of the TX-NR555. Its slim, functional buttons across the front panel displays all the source inputs for easy access, including that hard-to-find ,“Phono” option . To future-proof the system, I limited the search to receivers capable of processing Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. The system’s startup process ran beautifully and with a quick wi-fi password entry, its firmware updated without a hitch. Onkyo's "AccuEQ" sound calibration system took a couple of runs to clear a minor glitch, but it features an intuitive graphic interface on the TV screen to help the user visualize the whole process as it runs, very helpful. Note: The speaker calibration process takes a few minutes to complete, producing several seconds of rather loud white noise from each individual speaker. Its "Auto Return Channel" (or ARC) technology utilizes the same HDMI cable that carries sound and video content into the television to receive sound from the TV’s tuner. The Onkyo automatically switches ARC on when it detects audio signals coming from the TV, processes it, and sends it out to the speakers with no delay issues. I loved this feature. Upon closer inspection on the rear panel, I noticed that a few component inputs (red & white plus red/blue/green) were built into the rear panel, but old-school composite inputs (red & white plus yellow) were nowhere to be found, so there went my old Panasonic VCR. No great loss. The amplifier produced very clean, natural sound reproduction with rich bass and clear treble. Radio reception is very good; a local FM station I could never hear very well with my old Sony receiver came through clearly. However, the next stage is where things went sideways. I tested the Onkyo's surround sound processing with some demanding movies; Star Wars, "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones". The sound effects, dialogue and music came out clear and well separated. However, I immediately noticed that the front-to-back balance was off - the front left and front right speakers were a bit overpowering while the surround & back speakers were too soft. So imagine my surprise when I discovered that this receiver lacked any individual volume controls for both the side surround and back surround speakers. Even the front speakers' volume could not be adjusted by the user. After searching through every element in Onkyo's on-screen menus multiple times, I found no individual volume controls for any channel except two - the center speaker and the subwoofer only. Of course, the master volume worked just fine, but without individual channel controls, I felt like I had been placed in an audio straight-jacket. During a short conversation with a Best Buy installer, I discovered that this exact speaker imbalance problem is common with speaker calibration systems. He said he almost always has to bump up the volume of rear and surround channels to achieve the proper balance for his professional installations. The TX-NR555 includes a sophisticated 15-band equalizer available for each channel, but in actual operation, the range of tone variation for each slider is extremely subtle, sometimes barely audible over the full range of adjustment. Even worse, I also discovered many frequency bands are locked out from user control. Of course, you'd expect access to high frequencies to be eliminated from the subwoofer, and very low frequencies locked out from the surround channels, but in some cases the mid-range frequencies were inaccessible to the user for these surround channels, which just shouldn't be. I realize some people would prefer to have their receivers to do all the work for them and are happy to accept the system’s automatic calibration settings unquestioningly, but for those of us who prefer to fine-tune speaker balance and equalization, I felt cheated by this overly simplistic architecture. The most common receivers built 30 years ago allowed you change the volume of each speaker channel for ideal balance. It’s unacceptable for a well-respected brand like Onkyo - using 21st-century technology - to limit the user in areas as essential as volume and tone controls.

    Onkyo IPhone Remote doesn't work.

Part of the reason I bought was to be able to use iPhone to control Zone 2 speakers. Onkyo iPhone app quits everyday and they tell you to reboot your router, kinda defeats the purpose of remote if you have to go inside to reboot router every day. Contacted Onkyo support they were zero help and took 5 days to provide zero help.
