Do not buy open box
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Do not buy open box. The sales clerk told me that the item was covered under warranty. Well, 6 months later unit stopped working. Spent $25 to ship to onkyo service center and onkyo is refusing to repair under warranty due to having been an open box item.

worked well when it worked
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.was a great unit, until sound stopped working after roughly 2 months. It produces no sound now. There are a few youtube videos on how to fix but shouldn't have to repair after 2 months of use.

Works great until it doesn't
||Posted . Owned for 7 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't. I contacted their support about my problems and they didn't have any answers for me. It's great when it works but it's not worth the headache.

Fine receiver brings out the best in your media
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my third Onkyo receiver. It is connected to a quality 5 speaker (PSB) setup. I play records, CD's, DVD's, I have digital media and the usual streaming sources (Netflix, PBS through Roku, Spotify and Google Play Music through Chromecast). For every source, this Onkyo brings out the best in the sounds and video. I spent some time getting to know the receiver, downloading the firmware update, and calibrating the audio with the included microphone and this really paid off. The fact that a 1980's record or a recent Blue-Ray with DTS audio all sound so good is a sign of the design quality of this receiver. The receiver's modern Wi-Fi features makes it unnecessary to use Ethernet, as was required for the previous Onkyo. Switching between HDMI sources is effortless and quick and it is more tolerant in handling different HDMI sources than others. The remote is much simplified but a wide variety of settings is still available. Power is generous and the receiver has no problems with 6-Ohm speakers. If you have 5 or more quality passive speakers and are willing to perform the setup, this receiver is in an very sweet spot in terms of quality, capabilities and value.

An outstanding receiver - not just "for the money"
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a pretty discerning audiophile, but when my Yamaha receiver recently went out after a few years, I didn't have bottomless pockets to put into a replacement due to having just purchased a Sony 4K TV a couple of months ago. So when I needed a replacement, it was back to the drawing board because I knew I wouldn't be able to afford what I REALLY wanted, which was a Yamaha in the $1,000 range. I also have a ton of components to connect through HDMI so a puny 4 HDMI inputs was not going to do it, which is what I saw from most of the receivers in this range. So started looking online for reviews and it seemed I read a lot of reviews about the recent ONKYO line that indicated it had great sound and lots of inputs. So I decided to take a jump at it. Lo and behold, upon getting this thing set up in my home, I was blown away. I don't know where a lot of the people on here are getting on saying this thing has mediocre audio, no way. After calibrating this thing using the included mic and tweaking a couple of things like dialing down the sub setting and some VERY minor EQ fiddling (my room is a bit oddly shaped), I couldn't believe the clarity, depth, and warmth in the sound this unit offers. I'm thinking people just don't know how to set up this kind of unit properly or encountered some kind of issue with the sound calibration, because I don't see how anyone with an ear for audio could say this unit has sub-par sound. It also includes a ton of features. Someone also put in a review "the built-in Chromecast is a joke"... OK. What does that even mean. It works extremely well, has a quicker connection time than the one built into my TV and it does exactly what it is supposed to. After all that, I have enough inputs to connect all of the devices I need without an issue or having to connect a hub or anything like that. It even has component inputs - two of them! - which allowed me to connect my PS2 and Wii directly into my receiver without having to mess with the TV. Very nice. I highly recommend this unit. It's definitely a "bang-for-the-buck" unit where the sacrifices do not include sound quality. Perhaps the only things I don't like about this unit are that for some reason, as others are saying, it does have an odd "very low sound until 40" issue, but then after that, it seems to grow exponentially. I think this is largely because it's not doing its volume on a true 0-100 scale, but rather is using the traditional -/+db scale masked with the 0-100 scale. And for some inexplicable reason there is no option to switch the volume to -/+db. Also, there is no Dolby Pro Logic II decoder, which I find odd but am learning that it is becoming more common in newer receivers to not include. There are some, though, that continue to include this such as Yamaha and Sony, so I found it strange. This means that I cannot use surround in some older video games on PS2 and Wii that support Pro-Logic II surround, and am relegated to using those older games in stereo. I also had a problem using the Nintendo Wii in 480p with component cables. I had to reduce the resolution to 480i to get it to work. I'm thinking this is an issue with the way the Wii outputs its video rather than with the receiver itself, since I had no such problem with the PS2, but it was still a minor annoyance. However, I don't think the value in a modern receiver should be in its support of aging codecs and consoles, and therefore I am not letting these issues degrade from my overall score here. This is an enormous buy with excellent sound, a ton of included apps and capability, and a bevy of inputs. I'm quite happy and it will make the wait until I can purchase a beefier receiver down the line far from urgent.

Likely the best A/V receiver for the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Did my due diligence online and ended up buying this to replace a 12 year old Yamaha RX-V861. I have had other Onkyo receivers in the past and always liked them. This one is no exception. After disconnecting the Yamaha and connecting up the Onkyo, I powered it up and ran through the setup process. Everything worked very easily, and it was simple to set up by following the on-screen guide. In fact, this is the easiest receiver I've ever set up. Sound quality is excellent, with 100w per channel across my 5.1.2 setup. The clarity is better than the Yamaha, with more detail. Bass seems tighter also. I am running Polk Monitor 70s as mains, a Polk center, and Polk OWM 3s for rear surrounds. Even though the 70s are able to be bi-amped, they sound fine with a single wire to the receiver. The Onkyo app for controlling the receiver is pretty good. Not superb, but decent. I use a Logitech Harmony remote anyway and it was super easy to update the activities to mesh with the Onkyo receiver replacing my Yamaha. On the networking front, I attempted to link up to my Google Home wi-fi system using wireless. That did not work as the receiver is in a wooden cabinet with no clear sight line to the access point, and it is housed alongside my power conditioner. That is probably causing some interference. Problem solved by directly wiring the receiver to the Google access point. Once the connection was made, I did a very simple firmware update via network through the settings menu. Tested the connectivity to the web, and everything works. HDMI pass through from my TiVo Bolt seems to provide slightly better clarity, and although I do not have a 4K TV yet, the resolution on my Samsung 65 is more than adequate. Switching is fast, and the sound modes work really well. We watched our recorded shows last night using Dolby Surround and the sound detail was much better than the more powerful but much older Yamaha it replaced. We have a set of Yamaha 2-way speakers on the patio outside connected to the Zone 2 amp of the Onkyo. It works really well, with the ability to listen to a different source outside vs. inside. It's easily controlled with the phone app, so the IR remote is not a limiting factor. Volume control is easy through the app as is changing the source. Very nice! Very happy with this system. Plenty of power, great features, and the price is excellent. Lots more to explore with it, but so far I am very impressed just using the standard settings the receiver selected using the included setup microphone. My neighbor just spent more for a new lower power Yamaha receiver that has half the features and does not sound as good IMO. He's taking it back and getting this one.
