    Amazing sound and value!

I've been on the fence for months about upgrading to a Dobly Atmos receiver for my system. I saw this discounted Onkyo, and while I'm a 20+ year Yamaha user, decided to give it a shot. If you're on the fence get off of it and go to Best Buy right now and snag one of these! Easy set up, the included mic and eq process gives you the perfect performance for your seating space, and it honestly blows my old Yamaha away, even on non-Atmos material.

    Major upgrade from previous Onkyo

What an improvement over my previous receiver. I currently have an Onkyo HT-R494 receiver, but the 676 just blows it out of the water. I am using this with Klipsch R-25C, R-14SA, and R-26F's, with some onkyo surrounds as well. I was always struggling with balance using the old receiver, and almost immediately this new system made everything sound like the theater. Atmos and DTS: X movies are head and shoulders above any other sound sources, and the balancing of my entire system was the most impressive part. No longer do I have to crank up the volume just to hear what they are saying, which then caused the sound effects to be way too loud. Everything now sounds natural and within the correct dynamics. Have not noticed any video degradation as others have mentioned, and 4K HDR sources are as vibrant/life-like as ever. Very happy with the 676 at this time.

Degrades Video image, needs video bypass setting

I currently own Onkyo TX-NR636 and really like the sound but it does not pass through HDR so I'm looking for an upgrade that does. I tried the Yamaha TSR-7810 (same as RX-V781BL), sound was decent, not as good as Onkyo TX-NR636, but it only passed through HDR at 30 fps not the advertised 60 fps and yes I did try the fix of switching the video mode setting from default mode 2 to mode 1, that is supposed to pass through HDR at 60 fps - it didn't. So then I tried the new Sony STR-DN1070, it sounded hollow compared to my Onkyo, and it did not pass through HDR at 60 fps, even though it claims it will. Then I tried the all new Onkyo TX-NR676, sound was good, comparable to my current TX-NR636, but its not ready, its processing of video degrades the image. They don’t have a download available for advanced manual, only the basic. I updated the firmware to latest available (did that with all others too). There is no video setting to choose to pass through and not try to upscale or process the video in the receiver but leave it to the TV. If you have a good TV then the TV does this processing better. The older TX-NR636 has that option but they haven't yet got around to making it available to the TX-NR676. I wouldn't mind if it was not having a significant negative impact on all my video sources, even my 4k sources were not looking as good as they did on the older TX-NR636 that did allow bypassing video processing at the receiver. An AV receiver has two primary goals, sound good and not degrade the video, but the Onkyo TX-NR676 receiver currently fails on the latter. I would pass on this receiver until they have a newer firmware that gives this option and its documented as such in an advanced manual download from Onkyo site.

    Lots of settings

I got this unit to replace my older Onkyo receiver. Initial setup is quite easy. Hook up your speakers and eternal devices, use the included mic to run the smart setup and done. I personally was not satisfied with the automated setup. I chose to instead run a more manual setup. But this is in no way a con. The automated setup may work fine for others. There are so many variables like room size, room shape, speaker size, speaker type, input type, ect, ect, ect.. But without going down that rabbit hole, this unit has plenty of manual and preset settings to meet your needs. On a side note the unit is "capable of CEC" but with the included remote (no number buttons on remote) I'm not sure how it could control some other equipment.

Excellent AV Receiver with great features!

Originally, I purchased a model below, the TX-SR373. It's a good receiver, but I really wanted something with the networking feature. After some research I found that Best Buy also had the TX-NR676 on sale for just $30 more. It has networking, more power, the ability to bi-amp my Polk Mark 60 speakers, and can play high res music files. I finally got everything wired up tonight, and turned on the RN676. With the TV on, a wizard began walking me through the setup steps. That included plugging in a microphone and placing where I would sit, while the receiver went through a routine to adjust all six speakers to their optimal levels and EQ for both the room and my listening position. Very nice! I was not disappointed when I began to listen to some music via Amazon Prime through Fire TV. Dave Brewbeck's Take Five really came alive! It was a really extraordinary experience. Later, I watched one of my favorite TV shows, and again I found the receiver worked flawlessly as it combined quality surround sound with my 4K TV. I'm new to this whole 5.1 listening, so others may not find my comments all that noteworthy. But, I am very please thus far with the TX-NR676, and see it as an extraordinary AV receiver. You won't regret this purchase.

AFTER MY OLD ONKYO RECEIVER DIED AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF USE I REALIZED FIXING IT WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA.IT WAS SOOO OLD ONLY HAD S-VIDEO AND COMPOSITE INPUTS.HAD DTS ( PRIMITIVE VERSION) AND DOLBY 5.1 AND THX WHICH IS NOT USED ANYMORE. AFTER DAYS OF INVESTIGATION AND SEARCH I DECIDED TO BUY THIS RECEIVER ( NO THX)….AND AFTER SETTING IT UP I WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH THE SOUND QUALITY.THE REMOTE IS NOT GREAT BUT FUNCTIONAL BUT I KEPT THE REMOTE OF THE OLD RECEIVER WHICH IS PROGRAMMABLE AND WORKS JUST FINE WITH THIS NEW RECEIVER.IT GETS VERY HOT WHEN USED AT HIGH VOLUMES.MAKE SURE HAS GOOD VENTILATION.THE OLD ONE HAD A FAN IN THE REAR,NOT THIS NEW UNIT.

I got this unit along with Klipsch 2 x R-28F, R-25C, R-15M, R-12SW, and R-10SW and the loudest I have played it, after the calibration, is 75 to Game of Thrones and just wow. The sound is so crystal clear and the bass hits so deep and hard. Don't forget to switch the listening mode to Dolby. The mobile app works well also. For radio stations I use TuneIn and it works great and I set the listening mode for Net to All Channel Stereo and the sound is awesome.

Purchased this receiver the last time it was on sale for $249 and so glad I did! No issues to report and my Jamo speakers sound solid through this receiver. There was a reviewer that was not happy he could not connect his Wii to this receiver. They make a $10 HDMI adapter that works great, cause we have ours connected to this same receiver using it with no issues. Saw that it was on sale again today and thought I would post a review.

I had a little trouble setting up the receiver since I bought it "open box" from Best Buy and even though I was promised that all parts and materials would be in the box, The English manual was missing. Since i can't read Spanish, I had to wing it. After many internet quarries, I was able to piece together enough info to set it up. What I finally got was great sound and functionality. I am very pleased with the unit and would get another one.

    Not what I expected....

I picked this up to replace the Sony 5.2 DH550 that I had for a few days. Personally the Sony had a volume scale of 0-73, between 30-60 there was little noticeable volume increase till about 60. Anyways, I figured I would step up the game a little bit and try this Onkyo. I read the reviews from various websites and it seemed to be a 50/50 mix on the good and the bad of this stereo. The specifications didn't seem that bad either..... I brought it home, hooked it up and I was even able to hook up my wife's older WII as this unit has the RGB component connections! I went through the basic setup procedure following the prompts. I used the microphone for the sound calibration and once everything was setup and ready to go I started checking things out. My PS4 was working, my media center, then I switched to the component connection for the WII. The WII main page popped up, then it went blank like the WII was disconnected. I checked all connections and everything seemed fine. So I disconnected the WII and reconnected it to my TV and now it does not put out any video. I reset the WII, replaced the CMOS battery on the WII and nothing fixed the problem. So now the WII won't put out any video anymore. So I would recommend being cautious about hooking up any RGB devices. The sound quality was my biggest concern though as I would have assumed that the higher priced model stereo would make better sound quality, yeah I should have known that wasn't true. As mentioned above, I went through the setup wizard to configure the speakers like I did with the Sony I previously picked up. Now it's time to see how this receiver sounds. Keep in mind I'm using large speakers and there rated at 8ohms. I cranked the volume up slowly while listening to the sound quality. When I got to 50-75% volume the sound was starting to distort already. The sound quality was getting bad, the bass response was getting worse. When I was just about to 90% volume I just turned it down. My wife on the second floor of my home heard how bad the speakers were distorting. She stated they sounded horrible and the cheaper Sony sounded a heck of a lot better. I manually changed various settings from DB increase and decrease, EQ settings, Surround settings, etc..etc... Nothing seemed to help the fact that the louder I increased the volume, even if it was at 50%, the sound quality was horrible. I would definitely take the Sony DH550 over this receiver any day based on the quality of the sound. Note: I understand that the louder the volume is increased chances are the sound quality may diminish, but the Sony DH550's sound quality was better in my case

    Its Complicated

Sound is wonderful. Connects to everything under the sun, more stuff than I have. I do not use it with my TV. This is a huge inconvenience. All set up is done with the TV. Unfortunately, it tends to want to go into setup mode EVERY TIME I turn off the power. Start all over again. I don't like trying remember how to setup a receiver when I just want to listen to the radio, my bluetooth, CD or phono. Relatedly, the instruction manual - which DOES NOT come with the device, you need to go on-line and print out 128 pages - doesn't have a clear section that says "Setup without TV." I don't like digging through the owners manual just to listen to music. I understand a sophisticated device like the Onkyo will require a lot of thought and effort to set up initially, but it becomes ground hog day and very annoying. So I don't use it often.

I upgraded to Onkyo 7.2 from Pioneer 5.2 and it worked great and suddenly no sound. I have had to reset it numerous times and have since just turned it off and just playing sound from the TV. Maybe time to go back to Pioneer or Kenwood.

Just upgraded from another 5.1 Onkyo receiver purchased 4 years ago to get ready for an upgrade to a 4k projector later this year. I absolutely love the Dolby Atmos surround sound it adds so much to the immersion into the film. I also got an unexpected bonus. Video quality on my Xfinity X1 box improved by 25 to 30% providing a much improved TV viewing experience on our 135" wide video screen. Bluray videos are breath taking. Very happy with our purchase.

I'm using this as the center of my TV universe with a 4K LG TV, 4K Apple TV, and 4K Roku. It works great. I control the system by turning on either the Apple TV or Roku. That automatically turns on the reciever and and TV via the HDMI interface. I can control the volume of the reciever by adjusting the volume on the Apple TV or Roku. It's all slick and the 4K video looks great.
