I also experienced the "burning rubber" smell for the first three weeks and was about to return it when the smell went away. I wouldn't recommend this blender for the family due to it's unstable nature. If you don't hold onto the base and top while engaged this blender will topple over and cause serious damage to your kitchen. It does do a fairly good job though of grinding and blending so that is why I plan on keeping it but as security I also bought the BB warranty in case this baby breaks down.
