Haven't tested it protective abilities but it appears quite strong. The problem is... the case is mostly a hard minimally textured plastic. I find it really hard to pick up when the phone is lying face-up and grabbing the lower half (non-rubbery part). Slips out of my fingers repeatedly. Back is similarly slippery. It seems you need the extra protection because this thing is hard to grip. Also, the edge near the buttons is very floppy (not rigid).
