Normally it hits the ground hard on a corner. This case all but GUARANTEES that your phone will be undamaged. Mine has repeated hit a hard surface on a corner and not a single scratch, dent, or internal failure. Defender means what it says. Buy one and you won't regret it. Plus - think about all that insurance money you can skip paying from your phone company or Apple.
