Customers frequently mention the air fryer and ease of use as top features of the HomeCHEF CD87KS Multioven Microwave. Many appreciate its multiple functions, including the microwave, broiler, and convection capabilities, but some find the controls require a learning curve and the appliance is noisy. The stainless steel finish is visually appealing to many, although it is prone to fingerprints.

Microwave that bakes, broils, and kinda air fries.

The Panasonic 4 in 1 microwave is straight out of a movie. I didn’t know microwaves could also broil, convection bake, and air fry, but here we are. It’s geared as one appliance that can do it all, but while it does live up to that promise, I wouldn’t go throwing out my air fryer or toaster oven either. It does indeed broil and air fry with decent results, but it takes much longer than my dedicated air fryer and toaster oven. Broiling a 1/4 lb burger took about 18 minutes from frozen to medium well, which is a bit longer than I’m used to, however it came out pretty juicy with a legit broiled crust. The possibility of air frying excited me most, but also seemed to take the longest of all cooking methods. I have a couple dedicated air fryers that work much faster and for comparison sake, a hot dog typically takes 3 minutes in an air fryer, while it took about 15 minutes in this microwave on air fry mode. I could’ve done it much quicker in microwave mode (it recommends 2-3 min), but I wanted a quick baseline of what the air fry mode can do. That said, if you don’t have a dedicated air fryer or toaster oven, or are looking to save space (man cave, RV, guest house, he/she shed) then this Panasonic 4 in 1 microwave has you covered! It has some really neat features like staged cooking, “genius” reheating, and programmed cooking modes that are all pretty cool and work with good results once you get a feel for how it cooks. The setting to bake cookies works great, and I’ve had good results with the program to reheat crusty baguettes and bagels. The manual states that it should be plugged into an outlet with a 20amp breaker, but I’ve had no issues using the common 15amp outlet. I do wonder if that’s somehow holding the air fry and broil modes back, but I honestly have no idea. I will say it hasn’t tripped the breaker yet, so I’m fine with how it’s working for now. The only thing that’s taking some time getting used to is knowing what cooking accessories can be in and when. Thankfully there’s a chart that explains it and it’s really just no metal when it’s in microwave mode, but I have to get over my fears in the combo mode. In those modes, it bakes, broils, or air frys in conjunction with the microwave mode, so I feel iffy leaving in the enamel baking pan or wire rack during those modes, but they’re made for it and it works just fine. As long as you don’t put them in there during the pure microwave mode, I think it’s ok. Overall, I think of it as a really good microwave that can do a bunch of other things fairly well once you get familiar with how it cooks. COOKING Of all the modes I’ve tried, so far I find microwave and convection bake to be the best. It does a great job reheating things and I’ve had excellent results baking cookies and bread. The “genius” reheating is a cool concept in that you just put food in, press start, and it’ll automatically figure out how long to reheat it. However, it has varied results which is why it enables you to plus or minus the cooking time to your liking. The caveat here is that you’ll need to use it a bunch of times to figure out whether you even need to change the reheating time, but that’ll come in time. This microwave has a bit of a learning curve to use all of the features, so I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who’s not tech friendly unless they were restricted to just the microwave mode. That said, there’s also a child lock feature which I think does just that. There’s 2 broil settings (hi, low) which do ok, but take longer than I’m used to with other appliances. Same goes with the air fry mode, which I was most disappointed with because it takes forever and negates one of the best benefits of an air fryer. Outside of that, there’s a ton of programmed modes that seem to work well so far and I love how I can program cooking stages. The cooking stage thing is new to me, but being able to set different cooking methods and times in a specific order is really cool to me. You can set it to bake first, then broil, then air fry, all of which is fully programmable in terms of time and temp for each stage. There’s even an automatic cleaning program that I guess steam cleans the interior and makes wiping everything down a breeze. I need to experiment with the air fry mode more, but so far, I like it most as a microwave first, convection bake oven second, broiler third, and air fryer last. DESIGN It’s a medium sized microwave that can either be placed on the countertop or custom installed on the wall. It feels fairly well built with bright silver paint on the body and a brushed stainless steel finish for the front. The digital screen is easy to read and I appreciate that each numbered program scrolls text telling you what program it’s on. It’s a nice unit overall, though I wish the labels for the buttons were slightly larger or bolder. The light inside the microwave is plenty bright to clearly see the status of what you’re cooking and I haven’t encountered any software glitches. One thing to note is that the fan is pretty loud, louder than an older PS4 or Xbox 360 spinning a disc, so be ready for that. Also, it needs time to cool down the interior before it’ll let you do other functions, so keep that in mind as well. I rudely became aware of this after baking cookies and trying to microwave some chicken right after and was greeted with the “too hot” message. It’ll use the loud fan to cool down the interior quicker, but it’s another thing to be aware of if you’re using it as your main cooking appliance.

    Versatile Microwave

The microwave seems a little daunting when you take it out of the box and plug it in. There are a handful of mode buttons and then a dial that gets you through a bunch of presets and settings. There are several racks and trays included to use for the various types of cooking. There is also a very important book that got us going called the Quick Start and Cooking Guide with Recipes. This book starts out by walking you through the basics of the oven and then gives you some recipes and how to for the different types of cooking. Once you take the time to learn the basics the fun and time savings begin. The first thing we cooked were frozen pretzel dogs. These were perfect to get our feet wet as the first 90 seconds required traditional microwave followed by 3 minutes of 400 degree baking. So as you can imagine the time savings came from using the same device and no pre-heating needed to cook at 400 degrees. The dogs came out perfect. Next we did something simple again, using the preset for microwave popcorn. As you can imagine, the popcorn was made without issue. The next thing we tried were fries with the air fryer. I wish there was a preset for frozen fries but we did find some tips in the guide book on how long to cook. We made our first error here as well. We used the recommended and included airfryer basket but we did not use the wire rack. So the not so perfect results were that the fries weren't as crispy as they could have been because they weren't close enough to the broiler. Now we know and are ready to make them again. The last thing we made before this review was frozen pizza. The preset shows to use the enamel tray and wire rack and then asks the size of the pizza. We made a 12" and the preset cooked it for 17 minutes. The result was perfect pizza and the kids were so impressed they ask if we could make the pizza's in here from now on instead of the regular oven. I'll point out the time savings came again from not having to pre-heat the oven. So overall, I would just caution you will need to do some reading and trial which could have some errors, but once you get acclimated to this oven, its going to save you some major time and takes up little space!

Normally products that claim to do it all...don't do it all very well. That's not the case with the Panasonic Slimline Combi 1.2. It actually works well as a microwave, an air fryer, a grill, and a convection oven, and it does a good job in all 4 functions. So far I've made pizza, cupcakes, mac and cheese, and French fries, and the results and been what you would expect from an oven, but quicker. I've found myself using it to crisp things up that I never would have taken the time to do with an oven. Of course it works well as a microwave, but I've been pretty impressed with Sensor cooking. Just put your leftovers in and press the dial and it senses the amount of steam produced to know how long to cook for. I've found it to do a good job, though I have on occasion needed to put things back in longer because they weren't hot enough. I honestly was skeptical about the popcorn feature, but popcorn cooks perfectly every time. It's magic! Because of all this machine does, it can be a little complicated to use. The directions are well-written, so become familiar with how things work and you'll be much happier with the results. So, it does what a microwave does--heats things up--but it does it better. It also does what an oven does, but it does it quicker. It does it all and does it well.

I was very excited to try this product. With all the appliances on the market and the fact that they all do different things which can make for a clunky kitchen. The 4 in 1 feature caught my eye, along with Panasonic's reputation. But, this unit definitely missed the mark for me. I find the unit to be way too loud. I can understand the power needed for it to run, but it's a little offputting. The features that I really like was the microwave feature, and the broiler wasn't too bad. They work like a charm with no issues so, your basic needs will be met. The grilling feature is subpar for me. It only "grills" or heats the top. It doesn't get hot enough, and if you want it to get hotter it needs to be moved to a separate outlet and circuit. IT definitely also increases heating times unnecessarily. Overall, I think that it was a good concept but poorly executed.

    A real solid contender

This is my first multi-function oven, and it is a solid contender. It is slightly larger than my previous microwave, but only by an inch or so. I give Panasonic kudos for how well it was packed. It was wrapped in plastic and had a good amount of Styrofoam for protection. The shipping weight was around 37lbs. This 4-in-1 unit is an Air Fryer, Convection Oven, Broiler, and Microwave combo. The instructions accompanying this unit are plentiful, although I may need some in-service training to fully grasp all its features (tongue-in-cheek). From a microwave perspective, this unit performs all microwave-type functions (i.e. defrosting, reheating, melting butter, and general microwave cooking). It has an auto-sense feature that senses how to cook items without you having to program the unit. This is done by scrolling through a directory of foods. For popcorn, our previous microwave required us to identify how large the popcorn bag was. This unit, in contrast, senses how large the bag is and calculates the cooking time needed for proper popping. Technically, all I had to do was press Start. The auto-sense wasn’t completely accurate, in that I had to turn the microwave early or else the popcorn would have burned. It was pretty close though. It will reheat food and has a turbo defrost to thaw frozen foods. It also has a Keep Warm feature, although I haven’t used it yet. As with my old microwave, it also has a Quick 30 button that increases cook time in 30-second increments if you want to control cooking time. While we already have an Air fryer, this unit’s Air Fryer function worked equally as well. One difference between my old unit and this one is that the old unit required you to run it for few minutes before the actual cooking to heat the unit up. In contrast, this Panasonic unit does not require any pre-heating. For Air Frying, an Air Fryer Basket, Wire Rack, and Enamel Tray came this unit. This 4-in-1 also does convection cooking. Convection essentially circulates hot air around the oven for fast and thorough cooking. Though we can cook more items concurrently using our existing oven, this one did a stellar job in convection mode. Items accompanying this unit for Convection cooking are a Wire Rack and Enamel Tray. One of its other capabilities is the Broil feature. This can be used for chicken, seafood and burgers, toasting, and browning and crisping foods. For Broiling, use the Wire Rack and Enamel Tray. And there’s more. You can combine features to better address your cooking needs. For example, you can Broil and Microwave at the same time. Or use Convection and Microwave at the same time. This unit is very cool and is a multi-function wonder. I’m sure someone who already has a similar unit will have no problem transitioning to this one. We are not kidding ourselves, however, and recognize that it will take time to master. Though everything we’ve tried has worked really well. We just haven’t had it long enough to be able to use the unit without regularly referring to the manual. We used the Air Fryer function to cook Salmon and Broccoli, per a recipe found in their Quick Start and Recipes guide. Both fish and veggies were cooked perfectly. We cooked chicken for a meal we were preparing, and it was cooked perfectly. We prepared a macaroni and cheese recipe we found in the accompanying recipe guide, and it was great. We also cooked a steak and baked potatoes. Yep, once again it turned out great! One of the challenges we ran into was calculating cooking time. A recipe might say to cook an item for ‘X” number of minutes for each 6oz of food. To address this, we purchased a scale to better measure food weight. That said and based on our experience thus far, we think a 5-star rating is completely appropriate for this robust unit. Two downsides we have seen so far: 1) the buttons would benefit from being backlit and 2) the unit’s stainless steel shows every fingerprint. For us, this is a keeper!

First the good. Lots of flexibility for cooking. The air fry did a great job evenly cooking the mozzarella sticks. The pizza rolls were also evenly cooked with the air fry option. The popcorn popped all but 2 hulls on the Microwave sensor auto cooking set to popcorn. The broiler toasted biscotti with tomatoes, basil and cheese with no issues, they were a delight. The convection oven cooked pasta and melted the cheeses as expected. Now for the not so good. Lots of fingerprints wherever you touch. The button to open the door, the top of the door where you press the door to close it. So if you are looking for a multi-functioning oven, this does the job very nicely, even though this is only 1.2 Cu ft, I was very pleased with how much you can fit into it. No issues with my casserole bowls and glass pans. The oven comes with the cooking racks, ceramic pan to place under them and the frying basket for the air fryer. Now for the really really good news, the instructions are awesome. They are better than most brands and sets you up for success. Make sure to read how to use all of the racks and the basket and how to work the oven. The instructions are priceless, I spent no time having to look up on You tube how to set the clock, how to set the cook modes, everything you need is in the instructions. The only reason I gave the oven 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the fingerprints, which are easily removed by wiping down with a damp cloth, but when you are used to today's appliances being more fingerprint proof it was interesting that for the price point this one needs to be wiped off after every use.

This appliance is great because there are so many great functions (all in it's name!). Because of this, I am able to get rid of so many of my old appliances and have so much more counter-space. The size is larger than typical microwaves. It is really convenient to have and makes it easier for me to cook/bake more as a bust college student. There are so many presets for anything you would ever need to cook or heat up! I was overwhelmed by how many different functions there are, but looking over the manual helped a lot.

This is a gorgeous stainless steel appliance. But be warned - it is large at 13-1/2H x 22W x 17-5/7D and 40 lbs. It comes with accessories: enamel tray, wire rack & airfryer basket. I got this as a 4 in 1 with microwave, convection oven, express broiler and air fryer! I had thought it could take the place of my air fryer and toaster oven and microwave thereby making it worth the counter-top space it occupies. I am used to simplistic appliances and this is not that. I found this to be rather complex in programming its functions. I imagine these settings get easier over time, but I didn't find it to be intuitive. A paper included with the appliance states the airfryer basket is used only for air frying, so that's clear. But when do I use the enamel tray or wire rack? One of the items I tried to make was a take n bake pizza. I put in the enamel tray and the wire rack and placed the pizza on top. I pressed the auto program button for fresh pizza and started the oven. It melted the cheese but that was all. I transferred the pizza to my oven to crisp the crust and brown the top. Was I supposed to put the pizza on the enamel tray and put that on the wire rack? Who knows. I think it's just a matter of figuring these things out over time with more use. The oven creates a lot of heat so there are quite a few vent holes all over - so it needs some clearance all around. The top gets hot when using the grill or air fryer functions. And the fan goes on and off depending on the function. At the end of cooking the fan goes on to cool off the oven and the display tells you it's cooling. The display is quite useful as it shows pictures of which of the functions is currently working and other info as needed to help. After trying to prepare several food items, unfortunately, I found this appliance to be too much for me: too complicated, too large, too many accessories to clean. In the right hands, this could be a great appliance, just not for me. It does come with a user manual and a colorful recipe booklet with more helpful information

After getting this beauty home I was super excited to see what it could do. The description says it microwaves, convection bakes, air fries, broils and defrosts. Well, yes it does!! and quite well might I add. There are a couple of things I will mention though, check your measurements as this isn't a space saver by any means (unless you count how many appliances it will replace). You will need 2" on the sides, 4" on the back and a whopping 6" of clearance on top for ventilation. I ended up putting it on my stove because when I placed it on my counter I only had 4 1/4" of clearance on top not 6" as needed. Needless to say I didn't keep it. For new house construction I would make this a definite must. With all of it's functions you can't beat the price, the sleek design and a world of possibilities for cooking. I loved it. The instructions are a little intimidating as you have to press one button and press another 11 times, figure out which parts to use, etc. but once you've used it a little it makes it much easier than it appears to be to use. If you have the counter space with higher cabinets than I did or if you can have it built into a wall it's an excellent addition to your kitchen. I would have given it 5 stars except I feel they should have advertised it more for a larger space or new construction and I think they could have made it easier of use. It is nice though.

One appliance– Defrosts, Grills, Air Fries, Convection Cooks, or Microwaves plus various combinations. It browns (with no preheating), thaws, cooks quickly, and evenly. This Panasonic counter top appliance is a space saver. Small footprint – large capacity! Automatic programs, and useful power settings are great and easy to use. Interior – EASY to clean. Great as a countertop appliance (I use mine along with a stove top unit), by the way this unit can be over range mounted. Stainless fits modern decor. - awesome

Incredible Evolution Of The Toaster Oven

"Multi-Oven Microwave," as a description, doesn't do this device justice. It is the toaster oven equivalent of the InstaPot. This is such a unique release...I'm not sure how to even begin reviewing it. But this is what I have to offer: (1) This is a medium-sized microwave from Panasonic featuring their "iNVERTER precision cook technology" which I have tested in one of their larger microwave ovens. I am a huge fan of the technology with some strong opinions about their interfaces. Consumer Reports has not weighed-in on this model but has Panasonic microwaves at the tops of their lists. (2) Into this incredible microwave oven, they have engineered the functions of many (much smaller) convection ovens - like ancient toaster ovens that have been turbo-charged with convection fans and smarter broiler functions. (3) They provide a quick start cooking guide where their recipes seem to have been developed to help the reader understand all the available functions of this unique device. (4) Their owner's manual is one of the best written and most comprehensive owner's manuals I have seen in YEARS. I have a couple caveats for this Panasonic's "HomeChef": - This is not a magic trick...it gives you MANY options to help you simplify food preparation but it can't make the best decisions for you. - The owner's manual is very long and very detailed and has all the answers to your food preparation questions...but that means that you need to be willing to read and learn to tame this beast. - I am not totally sold on their interface here - I think they maximized the simplification in a realm that needs to represent a complex array of functions. Gotta go back and refer to the owner's manual - the subtleties of operation here are not instinctive. Complexities of operation aside (READ THE MANUAL!), this mid-sized device is nothing short of amazing. It lives up to every promise it makes. It is an incredible evolution of the old toaster oven concept, but it solves a host of other needs (and requires a bit more attention from the user now).

Verdict, Almost a Year In: Fiddly and Impractical

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've had this microwave since November of last year. This is my honest (and hopefully detailed) assessment almost a year later. Summary: Overall it is a fine microwave; everything else is impractical to the point of being useless. First some background: I was looking for a microwave, and was also interested in getting a combination toaster/convection oven/air fryer (like a Breville smart oven). I came across this and was a little skeptical, but reviews seemed positive so I said, "hey, it's one less appliance, so that's great". I should've trusted my gut feeling that this oven could not excel at everything. Ok, so the good news is that it can perform some of those functions well. The microwave itself is quite good. It tends to cook on the longer side (i.e. if a recipe or instructions say 4-5 minutes, you're probably looking at 5 minutes). That's all fine; it cooks very evenly, with better quality than any other microwave I've owned, and I'm guessing that's because of the inverter technology. So the microwave part is good, which, now that I've purchased it and I'm stuck with, I'm trying to be as happy about that as I can. But you, like me are probably not interested in buying a $530 microwave. Panasonic makes inverter microwaves that are presumably pretty good for much cheaper. Let's talk about why we're here: In addition to being a microwave, this oven has a "broiler" (basically an electric heating element on the roof of the oven), and can also work as a convection oven. It also claims to be an airfryer but I'm not 100% of any mechanism that differentiates it from the convection setting; when you use that mode it doesn't have a temperature or way to preheat, which is odd because every other airfryer I've used does both those things. I'm guessing what makes it an airfryer is the basket. So really, you're paying for the heating element, a fan, and some accessories to use both those things. The problem is _none of it works well_. I suspect a major issue is that the oven is BIG. Which means that it takes a long time to get hot, and the broiler is a good distance away from the food on the rack accessory you use. Let's break it down by mode: * As I mentioned, the broiler takes a long time to heat up. With this sort of setting, you might use it to toast some bread. If you want to toast some bread you're looking at 10 minutes minimum. Some sourdough I had (which takes longer to toast) took upwards of 15 minutes. That's a crazy long time to toast, so needless to say I haven't used that functionality * The airfryer setting also takes a long time. I tried both packaged food (Trader Joe's Orange Chicken) and my own food (just frying tofu), and while they both turned out OK, they took FOREVER. We're talking something like twice as long as the instructions / recipe indicate. And I think because of that, you end up having to watch and check the food a lot. There's no real fire and forget, and you'll have to do that for pretty much every recipe. * The convection oven I have the fewest complaints about. I have baked a cake in it and it turned out fine. So, it does work, but again, it takes long enough to preheat and cook, that I'm not sure there's any real advantage over using a conventional oven. The cavity is an odd size, probably 40% bigger than a quarter sheet pan, and much too small for a half-sheet. The manual states you can (well, must) put baking dishes on top of the enamel tray (or on top of the grill on top of the enamel tray), so you end up with this really weird and rickety setup if you want to bake anything in your own cookware. I also haven't tested using a quarter-sheet, and I hesitate to because the whole contraption rotates, and I think it would barely clear the inside as it turns around. * There are combination functions. What a mistake trying that has been. These options use the microwave in conjunction with the heating element or convection functions. In practice that means you just overheat and dry out whatever you're cooking. I tried the "combo 1" setting (which combines the microwave with the heating element) to cook some skewered chicken. There's a recipe that comes with the oven for this ("Chicken Yakitori" on page 32 of the recipe book), which has you cook on "combo 1" for a total of 25 minutes. My gut said "that's an awful long time to be microwaving chicken, especially uncovered", and my gut was right: it came out pretty much inedibly dry. I changed some of the seasoning but I don't think that would've substantially changed the outcome. I think by the time the broiler can heat up enough to do its thing, the microwave has thoroughly cooked the chicken. * There's a function to do cooking modes in stages (e.g. microwave for 5 minutes and broil for 5 minutes). I've never used this because other than with the microwave I can't seem to know when something will be done. So, that's just the functionality and performance of the things. Now the other annoyances, mainly related to the accessories and interface: * it's pretty big for a 1000w microwave. I'm guessing that's because of the heating element and fan for the extra functionality. * as others have noted, the UI on this thing is...odd, to say the least. I think I've sort of got the hang of it, but I still sometimes accidentally input the multi-stage cooking thing and end up having to reset and start over. It's not THAT big of a deal but it just feels odd that these esoteric settings are given about as much precedence as "microwave at 600w for 5 minutes" * the accessories are huge and it's unclear if they're dishwasher safe. I'd be particularly worried about putting the airfryer basket in the dishwasher. That's OK though because _it won't fit in my dishwasher_, and my dishwasher isn't small (I can fit half-sheets in there no problem). And unless you want to continually move them in and out of the oven, they take up probably as much space as one of those toaster/convection/airfryer things would. So, in conclusion, I regret buying this thing, and if I could return this I absolutely would. Instead, I would just go with separate microwave and toaster/convection/airfryer ovens. I probably still will get the latter, and put the weird accessories in storage.

We are loving this appliance. While larger than our previous microwave, the versatility of the 4 in 1 is great. We ditched our toaster oven and microwave for this. Use our regular oven far less as well. There is a bit of a learning curve, but we've already found many dishes that are faster and come out better in this device than our conventional oven.

While there is a bit of a learning curve it has turned out to be worth it. Loving air frying food. Used the convection cooker to make chicken breasts and while that was cooling down microwaved some green beans in sauce. Renews my interest in cooking good dinners. Yay!

The name says that it is a 4 in 1, but it really is more than that. Microwave, broil, convection, and air fry are the main ones, but then there are different combo settings that really increase the versatility of this all in one microwave plus. I've been using this for roughly two weeks now and the only function that has disappointed me is the air fry (but every air fryer is disappointing, so I wasn't expecting much from it to begin with). The convection and convection microwave combo have been my favorite modes so far. The convection by itself isn't that much faster of a cook time than a traditional oven, but it preheats faster and doesn't heat up the kitchen as much, so it is worth it. The convection microwave combo though truly is the best of both worlds, instant heat and the more satisfying results of baking. Even using it as just a plain ole microwave, you are going to like it. Very fast, very consistent cooking as a microwave. This one is definitely worth having. My title says it is the closest to being the only appliance you need, and I stand by that. You aren't going to replace a stovetop and if you need to cook really large dishes in the oven, you can't replace that, but for a single person or a small family, it can be your microwave, your oven, and your toaster all in one.
