You Can’t Go Wrong
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K is my second 4K DVD player. My prior one is a few years old so I was excited to see how it measures up. In the box is just the player, a remote, and a manual. I placed the player in my master bedroom. Setup was a breeze as the on screen display takes your through each step. Simply select your language and perform the video connection test. Then accept the terms of use and you’re quickly up and running. There was a prompt to check for a firmware update which brought to light my first disappointment since there is no wifi on this unit. I have no ethernet in my master bedroom so I could not update without moving the player. I am a bit baffled by the lack of wifi but when considering that the DP-UB154P-K offers no streaming functionality I guess it makes more sense. Some may find the lack of streaming to be an issue since no YouTube, Netflix, etc. is available but I don’t really mind since I have dedicated streaming devices which no doubt would outperform any integrated solution. I was ready to check out the player. I started with the menu. Things are pretty basic here but along with settings there are options to play video, photo, and music files via the usb port or from disc. The player supports all the following UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD, MKV, JPEG, FLAC, WAV, ALAC, DSD, AAC, MP3, AIFF, AVCHD. The DP-UB154P-K supports these 4K/HDR formats HDR10+, HDR10, and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG). Excellent! I have a Dolby Atmos sound bar so I was also very pleased that Dolby Atmos is supported. I have the DP-UB154P-K connected to my LG OLED tv so I was expecting some stunning video and audio. I was not disappointed. Simply amazing. I was definitely impressed by the performance of the Panasonic DP-UB154P-K in terms of responsiveness. Certainly much better than my old player. The remote is fairly small and is overall quite nice in terms of functionality. Ultimately you can spend a lot more on a 4K ultra HD blu-ray player but if you don’t mind the absence of streaming or wifi you can’t go wrong with this player. I certainly like it. Recommended.

Amazing for owners of huge DVD collections!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To start off this review, I have to be honest that this is for a niche sort of buyer. This Panasonic Blu-Ray player is for the dedicated movie lover who has upgraded to a 4K TV and wants to enjoy their huge collection of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs that they are unwilling to let go of. It is additionally for those who already have streaming available via their smart TV, Apple TV, Fire Stick, or other similar device since this Blu-Ray player is not a Smart Device capable of streaming services on its own. With that said, here has been my experience so far. First of all, set up is as intuitive and as easy as can be expected with a simple HDMI and power plug connected device. Pass-through audio to my sound bar works very well and this player appears to support HDMI pass through for audio control and power controls as well to my TV remote without any fuss. Now the part you are waiting for: how do my old DVDs and Blu-Ray movies look upscaled to 4K digital resolution? Well, they look absolutely amazing! Rewatching my old Blu-Ray copies of Gladiator, Braveheart, Last of the Mohicans, etc. has left me astounded. I compared the image from the Blu-Ray upscaled version to streaming in 4K directly from Amazon Prime on a couple of the movies and I found, to my layperson eyes, that the image appeared to have the same fidelity on my 65” 4K OLED TV! This is exactly what I was hoping for when it comes to enjoying my old movie collection. I am very glad to have this as it now means that when I get a hankering to watch one of my old, classic favorites, I need not rent it on Amazon Prime or search endlessly through a half-dozen other streaming services to find it. I can just pop in one of my old movies and enjoy the high-resolution, high-quality image experience! Thanks for reading and I hope this helps to increase your confidence in making this purchase!

Great player only missing Dolby HDR
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My previous device to watch Blu-ray movies was a gaming console from the previous generation . It worked ok but it was because I happened to have one. This device is a dedicated 4K Blu-ray player and it's amazing .it does HDR but only HDR 10 and HDR 10+ no Dolby HDR. I wish it had Dolby but it's not a deal breaker for me. This does support Dolby audio which is great if you have the sound system for it. I have a lot of old DVD's and a good amount of regular Blu-ray discs and this unscale these to 4K and does a great job at doing it . I actually find this device does a slightly better job than the gaming console I have previously used for watching movies on. As far as watching 4K Blu-ray discs I find this player does a great job doing it and I can't complain about the picture quality. I've tried a few different movies from the Mission Impossible movies , Top Gun Maverick, Alita Battle Angel, and the newer Planet of the apes movie. This player showed it didn't have any issues playing these movies on the player at all. If you don't want to spend a ton of money on a player that has all the bell and whistles and no interest in a console this player will do great .

Very basic player with good picture
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is nice 4K player. The picture is good and it was very easy to set up. The player walks you through the initial set up. This is a very basic player as it does not come with a cable or Wi-Fi. The cable was not an issue as I have several high-speed cables but not having Wi-Fi was a surprise as I am sure most people do not have ethernet in rooms where they might use this player. I luckily use power line devices for these cases. Performance wise the disc drawer is a little noisy but works fine. The player decodes various audio codecs for surround sound and DTS-MA stereo. There are a number of sub menu options but the manual is very weak at explaining any of these options. Particularly the zoom function. Actually, the manual is almost useless. I connected this to a Calman calibrated 4K HDR monitor and the picture was very good. I do wish the player had Dolby Vision as all of my 4K movies are in Dolby Vision. All in all the player does its intended job but I would probably recommend stepping up a model or two in Panasonics line to get some more features and performance.

Compact design. Plays from USB as well.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Bluray player was easy to install and offered the ability to playback some video formats that I had not been able to replay from my PC bluray burner. This was a surprise. The unit is fairly compact in terms of stand alone players (my previous one had a much wider and longer footprint). The player handled the standard purchased bluray movies with ease and there is not much more I could have asked from it. This was easily detected by my Hisense tv as well. Remote control was easy to use (something that is not always the case). I did find that the response at least to opening media slider to be a bit slow on eject and closure using the remote button. Does have ethernet port in back which I used to double check firmware update. Additional features: usb input - could play video, photo, and music from front usb and automatically detected device once inserted - also tested decade old pc burned DVD's and they played without issue. Additional (tested) file formats supported over older units: ts and mts (from Movai edits) and mp4

Great player!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We are very pleased with this Blu-Ray player, which also plays CDs and DVDs. We installed it correctly, so when we put in a DVD, the TV immediately jumps to the right playback setting. Setup is very simple and straightforward. Latest generation player that does its job well; reads video files in hd or 4K. This player does a great job of relaying the picture to its fullest quality with Dolby vision. Stunning image quality. I have a Sony full array tv and the sound quality and picture quality is amazing. Dolby vision image is extremely pleasing on the huge 75 inch tv. The menu images are clear and crisp and easy to navigate. Remote is relatively less in quality and could have been a bit sturdier. I like the option of having a repeats function. I have used it a few times now and I am loving the quality. This Blu Ray player has exceeded all my expectations. It is rightly priced and it delivers great given the price point. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Amazing product from Panasonic.

Excellent Sound and Upscaling - Wonderful Player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, let me admit that the Blu-Ray player I replaced was well over 10 years old. I really should have replaced it sooner, because this new Panasonic player made the experience of every movie I watched over the last few days unbelievably better than my old player. I’ll start with the setup, as there are a few important notes. The player itself has a small footprint, does not have a front display, and has a front USB input, a rear HDMI out port, and a LAN port. There is a power button and a tray eject button on the top of the player, and the unit does not support wireless networking, nor does it have any smart features. The remote easily fits the hand, has all the usual buttons, but does not light up in the dark. The player was very easy to set up with my 4K ready TV, but I just needed to make sure that the HDMI in port I used on the TV accepted a 4K signal. Note that many TVs only have select ports that will accept a 4K signal, and it is indicated in the reference manual for the TV. For example, one of my TVs has only two of the four HDMI ports that support 4K, while my other TV has all three ports supporting 4K. I use an optical cable between my TV and my surround sound system—which was unchanged from my last Blu-Ray player. Overall, I was up and ready to go in about 15 minutes, after an initial start-up screen that was easy to follow and complete. I decided to test the video quality (including 4K upscaling) and audio quality of this player with four titles to begin with. The first two were Blu-Ray releases about 10 years old—"The Hobbit” and “Star Trek Into Darkness;” the third was the remastered “James Bond Moonraker” on Blu-Ray, and the fourth was the epic mini-series “Pacific” on DVD. The first in the player was “The Hobbit,” and I appreciated the fact that the player indicated the playback was in 4K. (The player does not indicate when the playback is not in 4K per se—but if there is no 4K indicator upon the start of playback, then it is not upscaling. There were some previews and splash screens on all the titles I played were I noticed the playback switched from 4K to non-4K, but the indicator always popped up on the screen when there was a change). I was absolutely stunned by the picture—color and crispness—as well as the fullness of the sound coming through all my speakers. This movie never sounded or looked so good in my home theater. But I was not convinced yet, as a lot of the scenes in “The Hobbit” that are most impressive are computer generated images. “Star Trek Into Darkness” continued to impress with incredible contrast and sound. This is where I started to notice the richness of the sound and the deeper, crisper bass. “James Bond Moonraker” was simply unbelievable—I was speechless through most of the opening scene of the movie—it looked so much better than on my old player. But where I was most impressed was with “Pacific.” I had just finished watching this series on DVD with my teenage son and so I invited him to re-watch the first episode on this new player. He could not stop commenting on how much fuller the sound was—with deep bass and great surround—and also how much better the picture was than on the old player. Both of us are rather picky about the quality of a picture and sound, and we were both super impressed. I was able to jump, fast forward, and rewind through the movies easily with the remote, and the picture updates on the TV as this is done, which is helpful if you are looking for a specific scene. Since the unit is not wireless, firmware needs to be updated by ethernet—not a horrible inconvenience, but other players offer wireless (at an additional cost). I also miss the backlit remote, but there are usually only a few buttons I use on the remote anyway, and once I know where they are, it’s OK. I use all the smart features through my TV, so I really don’t need the duplicate of the smart features on the Blu-Ray player. I do miss not having a front display to show how far I am into a movie, but I can use a button on the remote to show that, which I will get used to. Overall, I was really impressed with this Blu-Ray player. It delivers where it counts (in sound and picture). While there are some minor features missing, I really didn't mind them being missing after just a few days with the player.

Best all 'round Hi-End player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.$199 used to be what the low to middle tier Blu-ray players went for ”back in the day". And back then you didn't get much. You were lucky if you got your disc back out half the time (don't ask me how I know). Well, I just wanted to be part of the excitement back then I guess. The Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K on the other hand, reminds me of the players that were "off-limits" due to their price. The Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K's form and function is also reminiscent of those "look but don't touch" players. BUT NOW we have the benefit of technology getting better. So, in my opinion, this player is actually better than those previous "hi-end" models. Let's explore why. First we have a bevy of HD image formats, where previously high end models did not come anywhere near the amount of formats. The Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K supports HDR10, the new kid on the block HDR10+DM, UHD, and HLG. But what really blows this baby out of the park is the hdr optimizer and the chroma processor technology which makes even older things like TV shows on DVD and some very old Blu-ray discs look better! I wouldn't call this upscaling as that looks (to me at least) very unnatural. This to me, is very different, very natural, VERY GOOD, and very welcome! On the audio side of things, the Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K scores again providing HD Master sound. And I am a huge stickler/audio-phile that would take the world's greatest looking Blu-ray player back to the store if it came up short in the sound department. One sentence: I'm not taking this one back! Just like it's bevy of supported video formats, it hits a home run with the audio formats, including ALAC, DSD in multiple high bitrates, WAV, FLAC, AAC and AIFF just to name a few. But if you have a home theater, or even an amp and some speakers, this baby again can make ALL of those and more sound like studio master sound quality to my ears, and to Panasonic's claims (so I can't be THAT crazy!). And to round things out, it of course supports Dolby, and claims to support Dolby Atmos (my up firing speakers are in the shop. Perfect timing). so i couldn't test that. What comes in the box? The essentials my friend. The sleek, player itself, which would make any room pop. And the easy to use remote. but don't despair! The player itself has a usb port (!!!), the usual HDMI out port --- go ahead and splurge on the fancy cable this time around! And (wait for it!!) a LAN connection for *cough* *cough* endless possibilities *wink**wink*.... I personally, last night, just watched the latest bio/docudrama that i knew came out recently on Blu Ray starring our most famous resident. And I'll tell you what, the visual reproduction, and the sound made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up, especially when it was coming to the final scenes. No other player has come close, in my experience. It just looks/sounds THAT good! So if you are like me, and you care about getting the best audio and video experience as well as bang for your buck, the the Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB154P-K has your name all over it! I have a feeling these babies are going to sell out FAST!!!

Good audio/picture-A no frills Blu-ray player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall it's a Blu-ray player. Unbox, plug-in power, a non supplied optical cable, a non supplied HDMI cable and you are ready to go after 2-3 clicks of setup. There's nothing really spectacular to speak of. Reading times are quick with a 3 second splash screen when going from home to disc contents. With the right cables, both video and audio are clear and precise. Considerations Several things i would have preferred or expected at this price point. Bundled HDMI cable, 2.0 minimum or 2.1. Bundled Ethernet cable. WiFi. Actual purpose to internet besides updates. The placement of the buttons on the Blu-ray player feel poorly planned. i hit those a few times handling it's placement on the shelf. The frame/chassis feels weak/cheap. Certainly something far more brittle than a desktop or gaming console. Maybe on par with the cheapest of laptops. If you're like me, you have a storage location for excess cables such as for audio and video equipment. What you likely don't have are labeled cables to differentiate a 1.0, 1.4, 2.0 or other spec variation of HDMI cable. You either trial and error what comes out of the bin or compare cables until you find something suitable. WiFi would have been nice. At least in certain parts of my house, I don't keep Ethernet jacks where there isn't much equipment to use it. Besides updates, there seems to be little if any reason to connect it to internet. Upon setting it up, it presented a prompt or logo for something called BD-Live. My initial response was to check what that meant in the manual. There was an absence to that function there. I then assumed it meant some kind of streaming function to be able to view the video on another device since I've seen similar functionality across AV equipment. In the end, I found no real explanation to it but came to the conclusion that this model had no real use for Ethernet. Conclusion As a Blu-ray player, this meets that functionally perfectly. However, this particular unit brings back memories of the old days, when the VHS or DVD were the standard. You purchased a DVD player or VCR to play that medium and nothing more. That feels somewhat out of touch with the times as just about everything else in your entertainment shelf has a secondary functionally. If all you need is a Blu-ray player, this is perfect. If you need more, look elsewhere. This is worth 4-starts.

Good 4k Disc Player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We picked this up because we didn't have a DVD player in our main, downstairs family room. We have a media room upstairs that has a premium 4K UHD player, but I wanted something more basic for downstairs because it's not something that I see us using all that frequently. There were just a few times when having a disc player downstairs would've been helpful. Out of the box, this feels very light and not as hefty as the one we have upstairs in the media room. I was a bit disappointed to see that the box comes with just the player, basic remote, and power cord. No HDMI or network cable provided, but I guess that's because this is more of a "bargain" option. They sure loved to tell you what kind of specs you need in your un-supplied HDMI cable though. If you're going to be prescriptive in requirements, maybe consider tossing the cable in? As connections go, there's a simple HDMI-out, Ethernet-in, and power port in the back, that's it. There's a USB port in the front if you're still relying on USB media... I haven't in years, so I can't speak to that ports usefulness. I hooked it up to my TV, dropped in Zack Snyder's Justice League UHD, and sat back to see how it handled. From a playback perspective, the disc spun up pretty quickly and off we went. Picture quality and sound were fine, the TV is a 4K OLED set and the sound bar also supports Dolby Atmos, so sound was good. All in all, I feel that this is a good 4K UHD disc player. DVDs, Blu-Ray's, and 4K UHDs all played fine, but you could obviously tell what kind of a disc you were watching, so don't expect this thing to make your DVD's look like UHD's... not a knock against the player, just setting expectations. No disc player will make a DVD at 480p look like a 4K UHD at 2160p.

Supporting physical media with updated capability
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m happy to see that we can still get a really good multi-media player as most everything is moving to digital delivery. I’ve got an extremely large collection of DVDs, CDs, Blu-Rays, and some 4K Blu-Ray, not to mention a lot of digital media. More and more the physical media is disappearing but what to do with your decades old collection? You certainly don’t want to toss them (lesson learned after tossing all of my 8-Track music). Heck, I still have a decent collection of tape format media (cassette, VHS and 8mm movies). Sadly you can’t even find a newer computer with optical drive and you would be forced to purchase and external drive but at least those are still somewhat affordable. But if you have a home entertainment center nothing beats a good hi-def player. Panasonic has continued to support the DVD/CD/Blu-Ray technology but providing a refreshed player and adding Ultra 4K to it’s capability. Setup is really easy. Power, HDMI cable and ethernet cable if you have a connection handy. I would have loved to see wifi capability for the unit but streaming 4K via wifi might negate the ultra format. You can check firmware and update once connected to the internet via the ethernet cable. Interface is clean and simple. Movie, photos, music, USB content. Once media is loaded in the tray it will automatically determine what it is and get you to the media menu. I pulled one of my Ultra 4K Blu-Ray movies off the shelf and had a very pleasurable viewing especially taking advantage of my Dolby Atmos soundbar (which Atmos is supported with this player). It also supports HDR videio output (high dynamic range) for a more vibrant display. Paired with a supporting TV and soundbar you can get the most out of this player. One of my movies that really shows how beneficial it is to have HDR is “Avatar”. Playback was flawless with no ghosting or dropped frames. I realize a lot has to do with the TV you have as well but having a media player that can push the content at a high resolution makes for an extremely enjoyable experience. It would have been great to add the ability to stream from services like Hulu, Vudo, Netflix or Amazon Prime (or the multitude of other services) but some folks do run other devices that support that function or they may have a smart TV with those features built in. For the feature set at this price point it’s hard to beat if you still have a huge library of media. Now if someone would just make a decent VHS player 😉

Simple and straight-forward, old-school player.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a world of smart devices where every device is trying to do everything, this is a remarkably simple blueray player. All you have to do is plug it in with an HDMI cable capable of handling a 4k signal, and you're good to go. There is an ethernet port on the back, which I initially connected, but there were no updates and there are no features requiring the connection, so it has since been disconnected and the blueray player is now behind my TV which is mounted on the wall. As the player is behind my TV, I don't have a line-of-sight to it for the remote, but I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that line-of-sight is not required for the remote to work. Now, I don't have to have the player where it is always visible, but I can still control it with the remote without contorting myself into odd positions to get the remote to where it can see the player. Everything is as simple as can be. You connect it to power and to an HDMI cable, put in a disc and play it. No smart features, nothing to set up, just simple and easy.

It Plays Blue Ray and DVD's
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As far as Blue Ray players go you cannot get more basic than this model. Set up is easy as you just connect the power adaptor, connect an HDMI cable to it from you TV, insert a disk, and then watch your movie. There is an Ethernet connection on the back but the ony thing I can tell that it is for is just software updates. So, let's talk about feature. Or lack of. The mentioned Ethernet port for software updates. Why bother? There are no streaming features, either video or music, so I'm left to wonder why they included this "feature". Personally going Wi-Fi would have made more sense as I simply cannot seeing justifying taking up an Ethernet port on my router for this player. My next issue is with the power adaptor. This thing is so flimsy that I'm afraid to look at it wrong for fear of it crapping out on me. But I guess Panasonic had to cut costs somewhere and this must have been an easy cut. To give you an idea, the power adaptor for my Panasonic rechargeable beard trimmer is more sturdy than the on included with the player. Build quality is seriously in need of improvement. I can't see someone paying this much for this player when you can get off brand with better build quality at other retailers for half the cost. Picture quality is where this player redeems itself with Blue Rays being rather crisp and clear. It does an admirable job upscaling old school DVD's.
