Excellent Blu-ray player for the money. Got it as open boxed but it didn't include a remote which wasn't a problem since I'm using a universal remote.

Best Value 4K Player on the Market

The Panasonic UB420 is the third addition to my 4K UHD Blu-ray player lineup. So, I didn't NEED it, but it was $100 off the normal retail price. I wanted to try out the HDR optimizer. Going in, I was a bit skeptical as to whether I would notice any improvements over my other players, a Philips and a Sony, both of which have served me well. But I was surprised that I actually did see a difference. I found the Panasonic UB420 to have a slight edge in terms of overall picture playing 4K Blu-rays. I looked at several scenes in Toy Story 4, Shazam!, John Wick Chapter 3, and others. And I felt that the picture was more balanced with plenty of shadow detail and image pop in the highlights. I have an LG OLED and I do feel like the HDR optimizer is doing a good job of mapping the EOTF to my display to produce some truly excellent images. DVDs look great, as well. That is important to me because I have a healthy collection of animation on DVD that will not ever see the light of day on Blu-ray. Lines are clean and sharp, and you can enable noise reduction, if you want, to smooth out the noise a bit. Blu-ray upscaling is also very good. Of course, if the player can handle DVD upscaling well, it can certainly do so with Blu-rays. With DVD and Blu-ray playback, you can choose from three built-in profiles to adjust noise reduction, sharpness, etc. one of which is not adjustable and disables all processing. The remote is a standard Panasonic control with no backlight. It's a bit too big with too many buttons crammed into the small space; I have hit the Netflix or Home Menu buttons by mistake. But that is a minor complaint and one that is easily remedied. For instance, the player supports HDMI-CEC, so I can use my TV's remote for basic controls like pause/play and navigation. Or, get a universal remote. The other downside is that as of this writing in late 2019, it does not support Dolby Vision. The upgrade to the UB820 that does support it is more than it would cost to buy another UB420, and the difference doesn't justify the price, in my opinion. I see no reason to not have Dolby Vision on the UB420. The entire line of Panasonic players have the same HCX processor. My Philips player supports Dolby Vision, and it cost less than the UB420 in 2017. Panasonic really should consider adding Dolby Vision to this player in 2020 via a firmware update. If they did, they would make a lot of owners of this player VERY happy. It's the only thing missing, for me. The player is a winner. The menus are clean. The system is responsive. It has played everything I have put into it. It's just a rock-solid player. I find it is also rather quiet. I do have it inside a closed-door cabinet, but I don't hear it or my Sony, unlike my Philips player. The menu images are crisp and the information graphic is sharp and clearly shows what is being read from the disc as well as what is being output by the player (both video and audio) along with bit data. There is no display and only a tiny red indicator that glows on the front of the player when it is powered on, but that's fine. I highly recommend this player. It's a great performer with several options to tweak the video output for us videophiles looking for the little bit of extra performance from our systems. Plus, it's just a reliable system at a great price. I trust Panasonic. They know good video quality and I had one of their great last plasma TVs. Now, they just need to bring their (OLED) TVs to the US market and add Dolby Vision to the UB420.

This unit is the best 4K BluRay player I have tried. It’s very easy to setup and use. I have it connected to the TV with a HDMI cable and also connected to my 2 channel stereo using an optical cable. Used an Ethernet cable to connect to my router. Stream movies from Netflix and concert videos from YouTube using the apps provided. The picture on the TV is excellent both streaming and playing 4K discs or BluRays. Purchased an open-box deal in “excellent” condition and it looks new. The remote is easy to use. It will turn on the TV too when I power up the player. This unit is much better than the smaller and cheaper unit Panasonic makes. Has almost all of the functionality that the higher priced Panasonic unit does. This is the sweet spot. Highly recommend.

I had purchased the ub9000 when it was on a crazy sale for my home theater, and I really loved it. My wife wanted a player in the workout room, so after doing some research, this seemed like the best option. I really love how small it is, and it is surprisingly quiet as well! Love the picture quality as it has the amazing HCX processor just like the 9000. Overall, I think this is a great buy, especially on Black Friday when you can snag it for a great deal! The biggest downside I’ll say is that when you are doing the software update, remember that the TV remains off for several minutes. This is poor design as most, if not all, software updates show the progress on screen. Just wait till it stops blinking red and you should be all set. Love this player overall, wife loves it too!

Being strapped for cash since I purchased 42-inch LG C2 LED, wanted to get a great 4K player though at an affordable price. Having read the problems with the Sony players, began to check out the Panasonic players. I was hesitant about getting the 420 since it didn't have Dolby Vision. However, seeing how expensive the 820 is, I picked up the 420. Using the player with C2, I have to say I don't miss what Dolby Vision could deliver since what I'm seeing is incredible. In addition, having the HDR Optimizer and tailoring it to my room, I can see Cinematic images though but the image integrity was not being boosted or harmed. I have some 4K Blu-rays which look great, but the upscaler that comes with this player, makes most 1080p Blu-ray look like a 4K film which is shocking. The only reason I would pick a 4k is if the Blu-ray doesn't have a Dolby Atmos track. Another thing that's astounding is how player it upscales certain newer DVDs. I have the Passion of the Christ DVD that comes with both cuts of the film and was comparing it to the Blu-ray, and holy crap the image looks really close to 1080p. It's as if I'm seeing a 720pHD stream rip. I'm really impressed with what this player is capable of doing. I would not hesitate and recommend anyone to pick up this player if you can't afford the more expensive 820.

I got this to use with a new Samsung TV. Samsung doesn't do Dolby Vision so this unit is perfect for that. If you do have a TV with Dolby Vision, you'll want to pony up the coin for the next model up. This is unit is basically the same as that one minus that. Set up was pretty easy. The interface, as with all these players, isn't much to look at, but seems usable. I don't plan on streaming with this. It did need a firmware update the second time I went to use it, which seemed to take forever, but these should be infrequent so not a big deal. 4k discs look great. Even standard blu rays and DVDs look better than I expected due to up conversion. I don't use the HDMI out for just sound so I can't attest to any enhancement that may add. Very satisfied with this purchase. I do have one issue that was specific to delivery. I ordered online and decided to have it shipped so I didn't have to go to the store. I ordered an HDMI cable that was not at the store with this and figured it would ship from a warehouse via one of the big carriers. The player ended up "shipping" from my local store to be delivered by a gig economy type of service. I have no problem with that, but the store simply slapped a label on the player box, which was then delivered to my porch. I have a doorbell camera so I knew this right away and was able to arrange for it to be brought in so it wasn't sitting there all day. Things being stolen from porches isn't an issue where I live, but if you live somewhere where it is, this could be a problem. The check out process should inform you if the product may be delivered in original packaging so you can be prepared for that or offer the option to put it in different packaging. Had I known this I would have just gone to the store and picked it up. This was really more of a minor annoyance to me, but definitely could be an issue if you live in an area where porch thefts happen.

Let me get the positives out of the way, This is a Great looking stealth Blu-ray player. Pretty quiet as well. The picture quality it delivers is on point but I have seen some weird artifacts on standard 1080p video. But 4k Blu-ray looks amazing! I previously was watching 4k Blu-ray's on my Xbox one S and I have an Lg OLED 65 inch tv...didn't look impressive at all. but with this player, it looks awesome.. But that's where the positives about this player end. Because the interface feels like you stepped back into 1997 DVD players. The remote is kind of clunky and has a TON of buttons that most will never use. And also the one thing that really throws me off about this player is the lack of any notification in the front panel... I just don't understand that. Between the slow startup time and no heads up display on the player, I'm left sitting there for over a minute sometimes just looking at a black screen and wondering when something will pop up because you see the red light and you hear the disc being read but that's it.

So far, so good - have had this BluRay DVD player for more than a month, very simple to set up and operate, much easier to use than my previous player (from about 2005). On my slightly outdated 2009 high-def TV, the picture quality is great -but a more up-to-date TV (a purchase to be made soon) will probably show greater detail and even more vivid color, I assume. Might have given it 5 stars if I had explored all its capabilities, but not done so yet - have not yet used all the other media capacities of the unit (photos, streaming, etc.). Seems to be an excellent choice for the price, and is very compact and lightweight. Sometimes it responds a little bit slowly to some buttons, as noted in other reviews, but really only by a few seconds. I like that it allows you to choose the instant-on mode or the power saving mode (which I use - makes start-up a few seconds longer, but worth it). Very pleased with this unit and price.

I bought this just a couple weeks ago. It’s compact and looks great- very simple design. Seems user - friendly enough too. I haven’t tried a 4k dvd yet but I will say that blu rays are stunningly clear played on this player, which upscale - so I was told. Price was very reasonable compared to some other brands and models I bought it to play 4ks but now it seems they are getting hard to find. I don’t think Best Buy carrie’s them in the store any more! Still, it was a good purchase. Maybe I can find 4k movies through one of the smart apps it has installed on it.

Absolutely incredible. If you dont need the DolbyVision of the un820, there is nothibg better than this. It upscales regular blurays to 4k HDR 10+, and is the only player i’ve ever used that actually upscales DVDs well. The rest have looked pretty bad, but this one makes them look great. And if you have 4k UHD discs, it does a superb job with those as well. So long ad you set it up correctly for your TV, it is fantastic. Watching all my old blurays now because its like seeing them for the first time. Highly Recommended.

I purchased the Panasonic - Streaming 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Audio DVD/CD/3D Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-Ray Player - Black about a month ago. I was pleasantly surprised that it was Netflix ready. The overall set up was a breeze. The unit is thin so it doesn't take up a lot of space. The picture quality is great no issues with that and the audio output is very good. It connected to my Wi-Fi without a hitch. I got this unit as an open box purchase and I am very pleased. Overall I feel it deserves five stars and I would recommend it to looking for a quality at affordable price. I am considering purchasing another one for my other tv!

I tried using a sony x700 and was not happy with the picture quality or stability. So I switched it out for this one and what a difference. Picture is superb, the hdr optimizer feature is amazing. Prior HDR content that was too bright or too dark is now just right. 4k Bluray playback to my projector is fantastic. Upscaling 1080p to 4k video is also very good. In fact the upscaling is so good I want to use it for network playback. The unit does have a media player for dlna, but that is the only thing I'm having trouble with. My first usage was wonderful, but later when I came back and tried the same movie, the audio was very quiet and not usable. I contacted panasonic and they suggested a factory reset which I will do tonight. To be fair I had not bought the unit for this feature but it would be nice if it were reliable because this upscaler is really good.

Haven't had it long, but if I was using it to watch Netflix, Prime, HULU, Disney+, etc it would have gotten returned immediately. Be aware that your app choices are EXTREMELY LIMITED. There are about 3 normal, popular apps available and that's it. No Disney+, no Prime if I remember correctly, no Apple TV, etc. So if you're using it strictly for a 4K / Blu-Ray player like I am then you're golden--it's a great little player. But it you're looking for something that also gives you access to apps and streaming services you need to look elsewhere. My Samsung that this is replacing has access to any app you want, and this one literally let you download Netflix, HULU and Youtube and that's it--everything else that you might actually want is unavailable. There are, however, a bunch of obscure and foreign apps available--but that is pointless. All the major streaming services should be available at a minimum. But still a great 4k / Blu-Ray player for the money if that's what you're using it for only.

It has HDR 10+. But what I like about it is its one of the smallest players on the market, even smaller than the X700. And the bonus, unlike the X700, it doesn't have a giant brick of a power supply. It's just a standard 2 prong cord. It's pretty quiet, does seem to get warm on the right side, even when turned off it stays a bit warm which is odd. I have two of these, both do the same thing. One new, the other open box. I agree with the other reviewer that gave it 4 stars for having a dated user interface from the 90s. And the remote isn't a Smart remote, i.e. bluetooth with less buttons. But the unit pairs well with my Samsung QLED tv so I just use the Samsung remote. I haven't noticed any delay when starting up, but then again I'm use to Panasonic's older DVD recorder units which were dirt slow. For the money, I think this is the best HDR 10+ unit on the market based on my research. Some people want a counter display but you can get that info by using the remote or even the TV remote. The smart features to me are moot. It has Netflix, but I think most people will have either a smart tv, Apple TV or something smarter. I used Netflix on it once and after an hour it crashed. I won't be using that feature so not a deal breaker. That was firmware 1.60. There's nothing super advance about this unit other than the Blu-ray playback. Of course it doesn't have Dolby Vision, but then again Samsung doesn't do DV so that's not something I'd use. One word of warning, if you buy an Open Box item online that is in Excellent condition, i.e. no scratches, you may end up getting one in fair condition like I did. BB credited me a measly 8% which was disappointing to say the least. Pay the extra money and get a non-open one. It gets 4 stars just because the interface is dated and lacks DV.
