difficult to use without a remote

The old player would not stay shut and kept saying 'open' even though the player was closed. After 2 years my other player went out so I went to purchase another DVD player and saw this one with duel players. Same issue with this one. One player works great, the other keeps saying 'open' not allowing my son to watch his. I am in the process of returning it. I am not sure if I am going to purchase another one or not.
