If you plug it into the computer and play from a media player or audacity it's louder. I haven't tried a headset yet. I switched the format saved to mp3, and set it to mono instead of stereo, so that the mic I bought to go with it would record. Main purpose of use and purchase, is to record my upstairs neighbors stomping and screaming etc. It didn't record them screaming, but you can hear something that sounds like thumping the mic really hard (the stomping). I'll update this as I test it out.
