So, I found myself in need of an optical drive having decided that I didn't need a laptop with one. I did some research and decided this model was exactly what I was looking for. I haven't been disappointed by my choice and it hasn't added much weight to my carry on bag when I travel

In spite of Apple removing input devices for almost all physical media, I'm glad that other companies have stepped up to fill the void and allow for disc-based input on the Mac. This blu-ray drive works great! You'll probably need additional software to actually play blu-rays on your Mac, but there are several low-cost options for you to choose from.

Extremely slow. This Pioneer BDR is connected to a brand new iMac. I went so far as to order their AC adapter thinking the double USB connection was not providing enough power but the performance did not improve. Even writing an audio CD is painfully slow.

Works well with multiple computers. Blu-ray not the greatest, but I think that is due to the downloaded software (I got the free one - perhaps if you purchase software it would work better). I like that it can burn high data discs (for additional compact photo backup)

The drive works great with my Apple I-mac computer with standard dvd's only! The problem comes in to play when trying to play Blu ray disk...You have to buy software to play blu rays disk...

I originally purchased this fir use with my mac air. I like that it's top opening but that said the top hinge is extremely flimsy. That and the LG didn't require any extra setup(the mac immediately registered that the LG was connected. Not so for the Pioneer.)

This works great for travelers who want to watch Blu-ray movies. It also works well for laptops that don't have a CD/DVD/BR drive built in. A word of caution, it does NOT come with any software to play DVD or Blu-ray discs.

It looked sleek and compact but found out when I went to set it up that the lid was a flip-top so it not only had a footprint but airspace requirement. The USB cable has two USB-A 3.0 males so to work it will take up two ports. Even then the manual says there may not be enough power and insists that only a Pioneer AC adapter, that must be ordered separately, be used. Finally, the manual says to download the ultility but a search of the model number on Pioneer’s website produced no links. Took it back the same day and ordered a more expensive front-loading drive. Best Buy associate was efficient, understanding and quick to help me with the return. Now waiting for new drive to come in.

Paid extra money to get a writer that would write and play blu-rays, thinking that I could avoid the blu-ray player purchase I'd been mulling over. It worked very well for the cds I burned. It was also quite a bit noisier than I expected. But my main problem with it is that it came with no software whatsoever, and unless you actually have a laptop capable of playing blu rays in its disc drive, you'll have to either search for free software or be willing to pay for it. I personally looked around at both of these options but free tended toward the barely functional and quirky side of things and paid obviously just added to the ultimate price tag of this device. Decided to return it. Really good cd burner though.
