for more or less the same price, the sony 10" active subwoofer core series gives you more power and bass. (no brainer). Got my first sony 6 months ago for my living room and I loved it. Got the pionner for the bedroom and I returned it the next day and got my second sony and am happy.

This subwoofer was clearly inadiquate for what I purchased for. I saw it on the clearance table and thought I could by with replacing it for my JBL Bass 2 subwoofer that went out. Let's just say that it didn't go well.

Wow! Pioneer what have you done? A brand new in the Box sub purchased at location dead out of the box. Swapped to a Polk and now all is well.

The sound quality was not very good for my home theater system. Although it might be better suited for a dedicated audio system.

    8" Sub Pounds Hard

In no way do I consider myself an audio expert or technically advanced when it comes to home audio equipment. I tend to look for inexpensive components that deliver way more bang for the buck than I what I usually pay for. That being said, I initially purchased an "on-sale" Sony 10" sub which did not impress me in the very least. Went to my local Best Buy & reviewed this pioneer sub with the very knowledgeable Audio Geek who demonstrated this sub's potential with a sound test. Very impressive results in the store, but I wasn't sure if this compact sub would have sufficient bass to cover my large living room space. Also worth mentioning after the second time I went back to "loiter" around this sub, as my wife describes it, the price had been reduced by $40 dollars which sealed the deal for me. I was pleasantly surprised when I hooked up the sub & dialed in my preferred settings. This little bad boy shook the room at only 3/4 volume without distortion or muddy background. Sounded even better as my 12yr old son cranked up the total surround sound playing Advanced Warfare on his newly earned XBOX1, what can I say, he is a consistent straight A student plus I get to play with it too, Anyway, we had to keep the bass & volume down as it sounded like a drive-by shooting was occurring. Definitely a great component to compliment my Onkyo eqiuipment & hasn't even been broken in yet! Hope this review helps, but at the very least, I recommend reviewing this sub & pricing before selecting larger more expensive equipment.

Wonderful quality, I ended up buying two of them

My only previous experience with subwoofers was with the one that came with my old soundbar. Upgrading to a 3 channel stereo system with Pioneer speakers (center channel and 2 bookshelves) designed by Andrew Jones, I decided to purchase this subwoofer. It did well for the most part, but when I would put loud bass heavy films like Man of Steel on, there would be scenes which caused the subwoofer to chuff (loudly push air through the port hole you see on the display photo). I was distressed at first, because it was so distracting, but further research pointed me in the right direction. For one thing the sheer size of my room was bigger than was recommended for the subwoofer. For another, subwoofers this size sometimes work best when paired, producing better quality bass than 10 or even 12 inch subs. So I took a chance and bought a 2nd sub and gave Man of Steel another try. The difference was immediate, neither subwoofer struggled, both shared the workload equally, and the quality of the sound of my stereo system jumped immeasurably. The idea of buying 2 may sound like a turn off to some people, but you gotta do your research: speaker performance is affected by the size of your room, the distance between your ears and the speakers, and the settings on your receiver for both the speakers and the subs. It just so happened that I needed two of them for my listening environment, and at their size, they don't take up too much room. They also work harmoniously with my other Pioneer products. Highly recommended for their sound quality.

My wife got me one for Christmas. I have paired it with an old Sony SA-W303 subwoofer that I already had. I have a Yamaha RS-201 stereo amp. I now have reduced the bass volume on the Yamaha from level 2 to -2 since the addition of the pioneer sub. The sound quality of the sub has really improved after break in. It sounds pretty nice especially when I play music. This is definitely a good deal.

I upgraded my 10 year old LG 1000 watt home theater in a box (DVD player) system to a Sony receiver and reused the speakers. I had to replace the subwoofer because the receiver required a powered sub, which the LG was not. Not knowing this when I purchased the Sony, I did not want to spend a lot of money. This was one of the cheapest options in the store, so I decided to give it a try since it had good reviews. The setup in the store was not working, so I could not hear it, but I still decided to try it. It didn't come with any cables, but I knew that before hand. Hookup was as simple as plugging in the RCA cable and power. Took 30 seconds of messing with the crossover knob to get the best sound. The sound is not as clean as my old one... it sounds a bit muffled. It's also a bit more "punchy" / "thumpy". Having said that, it still sounds good and shakes the couch. If you're not focusing on the sub, it sounds just fine. Tried it with music and movies. For the price, not bad for an entry level sub.
