Catch'em on Blu-ray!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first 3 movies have been long out of print for years, so getting these movies on Blu-ray is a real treat. I got them on VHS & DVD and now the circle is complete with Blu-ray. First off the packaging is really slick, all 3 movies are housed in a limited edition steel book case. The picture looks really nice, everything has been cleaned up and the films are presented in widescreen, something that the old DVD's lacked. In my opinion the 3rd movie Spell of the Unknown is the best with it's plot and characters, but all 3 are classic. Chances are if your purchasing this set your and old school fan and now you can share them with new fans! One would think with the 20th anniversary of Pokemon these would include some nice extras, unfortunately they don't. Your just getting the first 3 movies and that's about it, the extras from the older releases aren't carried over. This new set is also missing the Pikachu shorts that played before the films. It's a shame since many fans have fond memories of watching those before the main features and they can't re-experience them. It's not a perfect release but at the end of the day these are still the movies I remember. I'll always re-watch these films, their fun and exciting and yes nostalgic and that's not a bad thing. It's great hearing the original voice cast I grew up with, Veronica Taylor, Eric Stuart, Rachael Lillis & the late Maddie Blaustein you guys are the best! If you own the old releases I'd hold on to them just for the extras and shorts.

Great for what it is
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I picked up this steelbook edition last night and was pleasantly surprised when I got it home. As a fan of Pokemon, owning the physical copies of these movies was a must over getting the digital editions on iTunes or Amazon. Unlike another review, mine had three disks. Each movie is on it's own blu-ray disk. The quality was good overall, definitely not an overhaul on remastering. The special features are gone but if at the end of the day you are looking for each movie on a blu-ray disk and really want a physical copy, you should definitely pick this up. If you aren't big into collecting or don't care about having the case in your library then stick with purchasing the digital copies. For what this is, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

Great widescreen presentation... but not much else
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having grown up with the Pokemon franchise, it had been disappointing that the earlier movies in the series were never released to home video in widescreen, always in a cropped fullscreen. With this release, we finally get the first three movies presented in widescreen, but sadly, at a cost of virtually everything else. The movies themselves look good, at least as well as animated movies nearly twenty years old can look. They have been cleaned up a bit for the blu-ray release, but don't expect restoration on the level of Disney here. They were movies made on a budget, and it still shows, with some fuzzy lines and a bit of artifacting, though admittedly looking better than previous DVD releases. The first feature, Mewtwo Strikes Back, is still difficult to sit through, with a lot of strange editing on the part of the dubbing team and the confusing and ever changing goal Mewtwo is working towards, not to mention some cringe inducing lines. The second feature, The Power of One, fares quite a bit better, with some good jokes and clever moments, but still feels like a leftover plot from a video game, with Ash having to collect three trinkets to stop a catastrophe. And you'll be hard pressed to find a Pokemon fan who won't agree that the third feature, Spell of the Unown, is by far one of the best movies in the franchise, with a great, interesting plot, fun dialogue, and some sincerely touching moments. While that takes care of the movies themselves, what about the extras? Sad to say, there are none. The commentaries and bonus features from previous DVD releases have been removed entirely, but by far the most egregious omission is the removal of the Pikachu mini-movies that would play before the feature. It's bizarre that they would be removed, considering they were considered part of the film itself, and it's not like there was space lacking on a BLU-RAY. To add insult to injury, the credits for the mini-movies still roll at the end of the feature film. Not cool, TPC, not cool. In the end, you get a cleaned up widescreen presentation for the main feature films, but in exchange you lose the extras and mini-movies of previous DVD releases. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth the trade-off.

Violation of ADA law, No Closed captioning on it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While this would've been fun to watch, I had forgotten to check for the Closed Captioning or Subtitles features on it, the case and the DVD did not show any features as such. As a Deaf person who relies on CC, I am very disappointed and this is a violation of ADA law to not have CC or Subtitles featured in it. I tried to return it, this location years ago refused to refund me or replace it with something else, so I was stuck with a movie that would not work for me as I do not understand everything going on spoken language wise.

Where are the Pikachu's shorts
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It is a nice case and the movies seem to be of good quality but the only reason I did not give this review a 5th star is because they omitted the pikachu shorts and any bonuses. The only true positive is that they rereleased them in general considering the DVD was going for at least 3x the original amount.

Nice collection, missing extras
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great nostalgic trip down memory lane, but it lacks the special features you would expect including the shorts. Still, worth it for the pokemon fan or family member.

Can you say "cash grab"?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am not going to go into detail about the movies because, first they are old and you can find far better reviews online about them, and second because if you are here looking at this item you probably either already know about them, or are getting it for someone who does. With that out of the way, I will talk about this specific release. For $40 you get a cleaned-up version of the first 3 Pokémon movies on a single Blu-Ray disc and... that's it. I'm not calling this a remaster because hardly any work has gone into it, with severe artifacting affecting the movies overall. Additionally, all the extras (Pikachu shorts, Behind-the-scenes interviews, Deleted scenes) that were present in the old DVD releases have been removed and replaced with absolutely nothing. Unless you are a super die-hard Pokémon fan that just "Gotta Catch 'em All" there is no value on this release, a true disappointment from The Pokémon Company Inc. and Nintendo.
