Many appreciate the relatively easy setup and the inclusion of Dolby Atmos, which enhances the audio experience. The Polk Signa S4 Ultra-Slim TV Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer are excellent additions to our living room television. We have a 70-inch smart TV which has a great picture, but we have been using only the TV’s built-in sound system for audio. The sound is perfectly okay, but I have had experience with sound bars in the past (I have one on my den TV), and I was looking forward to see what a sound bar might do for this TV and viewing experience. The Polk sound bar and subwoofer do not disappoint. Setup was as easy as the advertisements and quick-start guide suggest. To take advantage of all of the soundbar’s features, your TV needs to have one of those “eARC” HDMI ports, which allow communication in both directions, so while you usually think of HDMI as an input, the sound is actually output through the eARC HDMI port to the soundbar. The TV’s on-screen volume level indicator works with this soundbar through this both-way communication process. My TV has an eARC port. Subwoofer installation is also simple in that all you do is plug it into a wall outlet. It connects to the soundbar through, I think, Bluetooth, but I didn’t have to do anything to pair the devices or anything else to get them to communicate with each other. It all happened automatically. The setup guide was exactly right...just set it on the floor (along the same wall as the soundbar is recommended) and plug it in. There isn’t even an on-off switch. It just wakes up when the soundbar is turned on. Keep in mind, however, that using this soundbar with an eARC port uses up one of the HDMI ports on your TV. If you don’t have an eARC port, or don’t want use it because it’s already in use by another device, the sound bar can also be connected using the included optical cable, or, barring that, you can connect it to your TV’s old-school audio output jack. Remember, though, that only the eARC connection supports the Dolby Atmos feature of the soundbar, which, according to the literature, includes, among other things, “up-firing drivers to take advantage of Atmos’ height channels to send sound over your head.” Wherever the sound was being sent, the sound from the TV using the soundbar and subwoofer is MILES better than the TV’s internal sound. The most noticeable difference is the deep base the subwoofer provides, which really makes the experience much more like that in a movie theater. I’m not one for wall-thumping base that shakes the whole house and wakes the neighbors, but I do appreciate the more complete range of sound the soundbar and subwoofer provide. Another difference is that, with the soundbar, the sound is much more room-filling. Another nice touch is that everything sets itself up automatically with regard to control of the soundbar by the TV remote. While my wife was in favor of improved sound, she was really not looking forward to adding yet another remote to the little basket we keep on a side table. Fortunately, it won’t be necessary to use the Polk’s remote unless you want to take advantage of some of the extra sound modification processes it offers. The soundbar automatically set itself up to communicate with our satellite TV remote, which is the main remote we use to control the TV. You will, however, need to use the Polk remote to take advantage of the different sound modes it offers. In addition to standard “movie” mode, it offers a “night” mode where the bass is reduced, and a “music” mode where the audio is “enhanced when listening to music or watching TV programs or movies with music in them.” I tried these three different sound modes, and while I could definitely detect the difference between the night mode and the other two, I could not really hear a significant difference between the movie mode and the music mode. One other feature available only with the Polk remote that I’m looking forward to trying out more in the future is the “voice adjust” feature. Here there are three different settings, labeled “1,” “2,”, and “3" and where the idea is that the voice channel level is adjusted “to make dialog more crisp and clear.” One thing I’ve noticed recently in watching sporting events like golf or baseball is that the background sound of the fans in the stands or the crowds at the golf course are sometimes so loud that it drowns out what the announcer is saying, or at least the announcer is more difficult to hear. I would like to have a way to enhance the volume of the voice without increasing the volume of the background. I have tried this a couple of times, and it seems to help, but I’m going to have to play with it more down the road. All-in-all, adding this soundbar and woofer to your home theater/living room TV would be nothing short of a tremendous improvement over the sound built-in to most TVs. It’s called “ultra slim,” and that’s true. It is among the lowest-height sound bars I’ve seen or used, and it is very unobtrusive sitting on the cabinet in front of our TV. Highly recommended.

It actually works really well and it is super simple and easy to setup. Not a lot of options, but does what it is supposed to do. 4 stars because it was open box and did not have the remote. I had to buy another one through amazon.

Serious Compatibility Issues with Sony & LG TV's

I purchased this S4 soundbar with a new Sony Bravia 5 months ago. After turning the TV on, I get a message stating "Switching to internal speakers." I have to go into the TV settings and manually switch the setting from "Internal speakers" to "external audio system" EVERY TIME. Also, the soundbar will not turn off when I turn the tv off. I have to use the soundbar's remote. I have tried everything including resetting the tv and soundbar, replacing the HDMI cable, etc. I finally moved the soundbar to the bedroom and connected it to my new LG OLED TV. The soundbar will turn on when the LG powers up but will not shut off when I turn the TV off, I have to use the Polk remote. When I contacted Best Buy I was advised I had exceeded their 30 day return limit and to have a nice day... My Samsung 3.1 soundbar works flawlessly with both the Sony and LG TV's. Everything is configured correctly. I contacted Polk support and got someone in the Philipine's that was English challenged and clueless, reading from a script and zero help. Note: I am an Aircraft Mechanic/Inspector/Engineer. BUYER BEWARE, It's JUNK.

Hello, we apologize for your experience. Perhaps I may be of assistance. HDMI CEC, when using ARC, must be activated in the TV. TV manufacturers often label this feature differently. For example, Sony calls CEC BraviaSync, and LG calls it SimpLink. Activating this feature will allow the TV to control the soundbar via HDMI CEC. Alternatively, the Polk Audio S4 soundbar has a remote learning feature. Please see page 31 of the service manual. https://www.polkaudio.com/on/demandware.static/-/Library-Sites-polk_northamerica_shared/default/dw3319e610/downloads/signa-s4-owners-manual-en.pdf
