Fantastic bar!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Once upon a time I had a nice surround sound system in my main TV room. Then, redecorating happened, and suddenly my receiver, towers, satellites, sub and center were no longer welcome. I miss that system. Since that setup went away I have tried a couple of soundbars to try and improve the soundscape, while working within the restrictions of the decor. As a result of the interior design I am limited to using a "slim" soundbar, and my first try with this was certainly better than the TV's internal speakers. I was still missing a lot of the features I used to have with the old system though. This is the niche that Atmos capable sound bars seem to be aimed at, so I decided to give the Polk Signa S4 a chance. So far I have been very happy I did. Out of the box this soundbar has a very unexceptional look. This is not a criticism. I want my soundbar to blend in as unobtrusively as possible and the black on black and minimalist logo-ing do this well. The thing that surprised me a bit is how wide/long this sound bar is. It is indeed slim at just over 2.5 inches tall, but it is 41 inches long. I believe this is because of the dedicated center channel speaker. Paired with my wall mounted 65" screen it is fine, but it might be a consideration for some with smaller sets or other space limitations. The wireless sub has a down-firing speaker and a taller-than-than wide design which fit much better in my space than the more blocky sub that came with my previous sound bar. Like the sound bar the sub seems to be designed to blend in rather than get attention which is nice. Set up of the soundbar and sub could not have been easier. I had connected my old sound bar to the HDMI ARC port on the TV, so all I had to do was plug in the power, plug in the HDMi on the sound bar and turn it on. On my main TV, HDMI ARC output is automatic when connected, but I had an earlier experience setting up an older TV to use an ARC connection in my bedroom and that was a little more arcane, so I guess it would depend on the TV settings. When I plugged in the subwoofer it connected automatically to the soundbar as well and everything was up and running in less time than it took me with my previous soundbar. After setting up, I got to the fun part- testing with a variety of program options and playing with the settings to see what everything did. I first tested the sound by pulling up my Pandora account and throwing some music through it. I found that that the stereo sound was really quite good, and easily the best separation that I had experienced from a sound bar. The bass provided by the down-firing subwoofer was not as aggressive as the older bar's forward-facing model. My first feeling was that it was less effective than my old bar. I played around with the bass settings, and I found that I liked how the bass of the Signa S4 is FELT more than it's HEARD. After running through the bar's capabilities with music, I decided to see what the ATMOS capability could do with some content streaming from a galaxy far far away. I have to say that the audio with ATMOS content is really lush. That's just the only word I can come up with to describe it. Stereo separation is outstanding, and the "motion" of the audio through the sound stage is remarkable. Like with the music the bass was less and audible component than a tactile one, and did not overwhelm or muddy the sound at all. The sensation that the sound fills the space is superior to any other non-ATMOS soundbar I have used. The dedicated center channel speaker also set this bar apart from others I have previously tried. With a center speaker and the ability to adjust just the dialog of the content through the remote control I found that there was better balance between the spoken parts and the rest of the sound filed than I have ever experienced with any other soundbar. If this soundbar came packaged with some small, wireless rear satellites I think it would be the perfect surround sound solution for most people. One thing that I did notice with this soundbar that I didn't experience with my previous one was a noticeable lip-sync delay when playing the video. I was able to adjust it withing the TV's settings, but to get it to the audio to "line up" with the video I had to make a rather large adjustment. This wasn't impossible to correct, or even difficult, but I had not had the issue with my previous sound set ups (receiver or soundbar) so it was somewhat surprising and I wonder if it is because of the ATMOS capability. Like I said, I was able to adjust so not a deal-breaker, just though I would mention it. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this soundbar. While I think it would be impossible for any bar to completely mimic a well-placed surround speaker system, particularly an ATMOS-capable satellite system, this one has dramatically improved the audio part of my viewing experience.

Delay on aux, sub is mediocre, still sounds good t
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I initially got the jbl 5.1 bar, it has a 10in sub. It has no aux in, so i had a really bad delay between my Sonos connect thru the jbl and the rest of my Sonos products. I like low bass, so the Sonos bars just aren't enough alone and I'm not paying what they want for a sub with a bar. I got the signa s4 because of the aux in. The delay isn't as bad as routing through the tv to the jbl via arc, but it still has a delay considering the Sonos connect is going starting into the s4 aux in. If the s4 sub had a little more umph I'd keep it over the jbl. Its ok sounding, it seems to come alive at about 40hz, but it just can't compare to the jbl 10in. When cranked, it just has to work too hard and gets kinda muddy. I'm not terribly impressed with atmos over the standard surround. You can tell the difference, but unless i had full satellites, i don't think I'd fuss with it. Maybe i expected to much from the over head projection, and I'm comparing similar price bars with 5 surrounds anyways. Also the display kinda sucks, the jbl tells you in words what is going on. Polk just has lights, you need to remember what means what, like 3 blinks on the right led for voice setting 3. The settings are super nice. With jbl did that. The night mode is great. The choice to find a suitable setting is much better than jbls bass only adj. Ultimately I'm probably keeping the jbl solely because of it's sub, it just sounds amazing deep down and the display on the polk bugs me. Both do sound great. If i didn't compare each side by side, id be happy with either. Both have delays, which is only noticable when using multiroom sources. Though the s4 is much less noticeable because of it's analog in.

Just what the modern TV needs.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Over my many years, I have always gone with the BIG booming sound systems. Starting back with big tower speakers up front, then adding two in the back. And then adding two up on the ceiling. That works great when you have the space, and don't mind the look, and the complications with it. This system DOESN'T fully replace my dedicated Dolby Atmos system in the theater room. but what it does, it does MASSIVELY improve the sound in our living room (our daily watch area), and I will be adding one to our master bedroom (our second primary watching area) So we upgraded recently our living room TV to 83" LG. Awesome screen. But the sound was just "ok", so was really excited to get this product. If you have an eARC compatible TV (check your manual), this literally is as easy to setup as: connect HDMI, connect the two power cords (one for the bar and one for the sub), and your done. My LG TV immediately detected it, and set everything up. There was nothing else to do. The volume controls on the TV control the volume on the bar. It turns auto-on/off, no fuss. the sound quality is awesome. Really is, amazing to see what this small bar can do. I played the classic Top Gun and Fifth Element, and was so much fun to get that sound back in our living room. The base I had to turn down, as out of the box it was a little strong for our room. The clarity of the rest of the sound was above bar. voice were clear, music, everything. also the picture makes the bar seem bigger then it really is. This bar was relatively small (I guess compared to the 83" anything would be small). The only small knocks I have: The included cables are a bit thick and bulky, and don't bend easily, maybe will need to upgrade to something a little more adjustable. The mounting hooks, are small. I am going to need to purchase a third party kit, to mount this directly to the TV. (not really expecting that to be in the box, as there are so many options out there). Overall... GREAT PRICE, the easiest setup I have ever had for a piece of AV tech, and adds awesome sound.

It's good under this price range.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In term of the crestal sound, ( clear in the higher frequency), it is very satisfied, compared its price, it is very good. This was found after testing at showroom, and is very difficulty to recognize just from on line shopping. However, its blue tooth is not working with Window 10 system.
