One of the all-time greatest horror flicks

Poltergeist is one of those horror movies that has production values way above average for the genre, and as such feels almost like it should be regarded differently. It's a supernatural horror, one that just happens to have been made by a big studio with a decent budget, and the skill of Steven Spielberg behind the script and camera (he's suggested to have directed most of the film despite Tobe Hooper being credited) and also co-editing with Michael Kahn. As a result, Poltergeist is beautiful film, with cinematography on the level of the best films of the period, with fantastic performances from all the actors, and a stunning score from Jerry Goldsmith. Whether you enjoy it or not is, of course, a matter of personal taste. I for one think it's an exceptional film. So, how does it look on Blu-ray? Quite honestly, it looks fantastic. I'm sure Spielberg would never allow one of his own productions to be put out on Blu-ray without a great HD transfer. The images are sharp and clear, in full original format, with detail maintained in darker shots. As seems to be a case with the format, poor visual effects shots tend to be highlighted, but I didn't find that to be the case with Poltergeist. Most of the effects are so unique stylistically, achieved to some degree optically rather than with lots of compositing, that you don't suddenly find yourself distracted by them looking bad on Blu-ray. I must admit, the scene where Marty pulls off his face looks like it always did. I always felt it was very unconvincing and only worked because of it's grotesqueness, but if you liked it before, I'm sure you won't be bothered by it. The "Wizard of Oz" shot of the tree going into the twister looks no worse, either. The sound is crisp and clean, although this is a film that was always very well mixed anyway. I can honestly recommend the Blu-ray of Poltergeist as a substantial improvement over any previous release, definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

Here we have one of the scariest films of the 80's - a classic. Who can forget "Carrie Anne, Don't go into the light!!" Films of this age are hit and miss with blu ray transfers. Sometimes the quality is subpar and sometimes the film is so dated however good the transfer it lacks any true oomph. Luckily neither of these two things happen here. The blu ray transfer shines. Colors are crisp and there is no grain visible from age. One might think that the type of visual effects used this long ago might not transfer well but they certainly do. They pop. Added to this brilliant picture is audio that keeps the tension mounting and will have you jumping at every scare. Dialogue is strong and audio effects utilize all speakers to their max. It is great to see that such a classic film has not aged and is just as effective today. This blu ray disc also comes in a special hardcover case that has a great booklet about the film. For those who remember the film definitely purchase it on blu ray in its new glory. Those who have never seen it will get a definite treat.

    When Spielberg had skills

This is one of Spielberg's best films which has an overall message of respecting the dead. A family has lived for years in this house and have never experienced any problems, but after digging up their backyard to make room for a pool they dig up the history of the land of which their house was built. Spirits take over the house and cause a series of events to take place involving a possessed tree, clown doll, and much more. The youngest daughter communicates through the static of the television set and eventually is seized by the spirits because of what she possesses. Her family goes through a series of attempts to rescue their little girl and find out what is happening to their house. At the time this movie came out, it was probably hailed as one of the best horror movies ever and to this day is known as a classic horror which still has the abilities to send shivers down the spine.

Still a good film BUT POOR EXTRAS ON DVD

I am not a horror film fan. Would never watch most of them. But, I have always liked this film. Still do. Holds up over the test of time, except for SOME of the effects. Some are still very good but some look cheap now a days. Cast does a good job with their roles. Still, however, do NOT like the parents smoking drugs with their 3 kids in the house. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DVD. Where are the extras? No interviews with the remaining cast, no deleted scenes, story on film or effects , etc. Just a lame thing on poltergeists. Will NOT even waste my time watching that. This is supposed to be an anniversary release for the film. THEY APPARENTLY DID A RUSH JOB & DID NOT CARE TO GIVE FANS ANYTHING EXCEPT THE FILM TO LOOK AT. AGAIN, AS I SAID ABOVE, THIS IS VERY DISAPPOINTING. This makes me rate the DVD a 4 not a 5.

Poltergeist has always been one of my favourite films of all time, so when I saw it was being released for Blu-Ray I bought it right away. This Blu-Ray format brings a whole new dimention to the film compared to the dvd version. The clarity/picture gets top marks, and makes it all that more real, which totally immerses you into the film and scares you a whole lot more than previously. This Blu-Ray is a must for all Poltergeist fans, and also fans who just love to be scared. Buy!!

    From the New Yorker

When I saw Poltergeist was available on Blu-ray it brought back memories of child hood terror. I was worried it may look dated in this world of CGI and special effects, but fear not (pun intended) this movie is every bit as good as I recalled. Even knowing the story I found myself engrossed and enjoyed every minute. Despite being firmly planted in the early eighties; a period many of us wish to forget, there is no substitute for a good story, strong characters and good direction. If you have never experienced Poltergeist give it a go in the full glory of Blu-ray, you won't be disappointed. If you are a fan of modern day slash & hack horror you may find it a little too clean-cut, but I challenge you to watch this and open your eyes to one of the best horrors ever made.

Poltergeist is an undisputed classic and I can only add to the praise already given in many reviews here. The effects stand up even now and it really is a cult classic. If you've never seen it before you will not be disappointed. though. the extras are lacking. cut don't make that stop you from watching this..

Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) directs this unbelievably scary film. I had been in love with horror movies ever since watching this as a youngster. Absolutely terrifying and dark, suspenseful, you name it this movie delivers! Speilberg gets credit for it most of the time but he only co-produced so my hats off to Hooper! A must see for horror fans!

personally i think the blu-ray version is superior to the theater showing...but that was very long ago...video resolution pretty well done, as well as color richness...i liked the movie for the story and could identify with it as when a child as well as an adult...the only "corny" part for me was the bedroom scene with the floating stuff...just my opinion...if you like the TV stream version, you'll be impressed with the blu-ray version

This movie is about a little girl who is haunted by ghost. The whole family experiences alot of frightening things, such as a boy almost being eaten by a tree and a girl who gets sucked into a closet. There is gore, so if you get sick by the gross parts of this movie I do not recomened it. There are 2 sequels to this movie.

Still one of the best horror movies in my opinion. Good transfer to Blu-ray which slightly lacks in special features but the film itself is the selling point for me. A must have for any collection.
