First, let’s clarify. The original Poltergeist released in 1982 was rated PG. By today’s standards it would probably be PG-13 at most. So, with this 2015 remake (reboot, whatever) we’re going to steer clear of yet another horror movie being rated under an R. The plot is similar to the original. A family moves into a new home only to start experiencing strange occurrences that can only be explained by the supernatural. Granted that there wasn’t much more plot in the original, but you had powerhouses like Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg behind the scenes. The remake was directed by Gil Kenan. Yeah, I don’t know who that is either. As far as the family is concerned, we have the mother, father, brother and two sisters just like the original, but for some reason the names have all been changed. We still get the little girl talking to the TV, but it’s not nearly as compelling. And when we get the famous line, “They’re Here” the girl says it almost as though she’s bored. Of course, having read the script ahead of time and knowing what was to come, perhaps it was her way of letting us viewers know that only boredom was to come. None of the characters are fleshed out at all. We only get the tiny hint of what these people might be, but not enough to remotely care about them. (One thing you may notice in this review is my lack of names, it’s because there isn’t a single memorable character in the entire flick.) Even the great Jared Harris can’t save this meandering snoozefest. He shows up way too late in the film (nearly two-thirds through) and is given next to nothing to do other than spout the trite David Lindsay-Abaire wrote in his lurid script. The set-pieces, you know the stuff we came to see, are boring, predictable and just plain uninteresting. There are moments from the original recreated here, but again they’re done without any flare. It was as thought he filmmakers realized they’d gone a few minutes without homaging the original and threw something haphazardly. Which brings me to my other problem with the film. It tries to be different, but not really. All the names are changed from the original, yet it’s the same family with the same siblings as the original. Jared Harris is the Zelda Rubinstein of the film without any of her charm or wit. We get the clown attack that isn’t remotely scary and even the tree makes an unwanted CGI-laden appearance. The most important role of the film is the little girl, Carol-Ann from the original. Some child actors are great and what the late Heather O’Rourke did in the original was memorable and impressive. Would have been interesting to see what she may have become had she not passed at such a young age. The girl here couldn’t care any less about the role and does nothing to improve on the lazy writing. When she speaks the famous line, “They’re Here,” she’s nearly yawning (as are we). I expected a lot more from Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. You know, the two producers behind the Evil Dead films and its rather good remake. The blu-ray is just as disappointing as the film itself. I guess Ghost House Pictures and 20th Century Fox knew that adding special features to a terrible film wouldn’t help sales so they didn’t bother. All we get is an unrated cut of the film (the only version I’ve seen and can’t possibly begin to tell you what was added, i.e. gore, violence, since there’s none to be found). Then we get an alternate ending that might be worse than the theatrical ending; and a still gallery rounds out the features – not counting the previews, which I don’t. It’s a disappointing blu-ray for a very disappointing remake. Don’t bother with this film, not even from Redbox. Instead, invest your money in the original. Perhaps one day we’ll get a special features-laden release of that far superior film.

This is not the 1982 version it's the 2015 remake. Very disappointed in Best Buy for dropping the ball on this one. The original Poltergeist is one of my favorite 80's horror movie and I was excited to hear it's getting a steelbook. Purchased the movie and then when I flipped over the case seen the cast and quickly realized that it's the remake and not the original. Best buy needs to update their information before they upset more customers.

I was so excited a couple of days after buying this. Got everything ready, popped the movie in just to find out that I had purchased the re-make. After going back to the product page, Yes, I see the (2015) next to the description. But, I wasn't even thinking about that movie when I went to purchase. I was so upset, not only to realize that I have the wrong movie, but that now I can't even return it. BE WARNED THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL. I'm not even a fan of the re-make. So upsetting..

This was the 2015 remake even though it's description clearly stated its 1982. Called customer service to complain and they didn't even seem to care. I bought a movie I already owned, and unfortunately didn't realize the mistake till it was opened.

I was hoping for a better version than the original film. I thought with both the theatrical and extended versions on blu-ray, I'd get it. Nope. This film is more sorry than the original....and the original wasn't much. Don't waste your time and money on this garbage. Buy something better. Anything will do.

Sometimes a remake will at least do the original justice, but unfortunately this is not the case with 2015's "Poltergeist". Lacked the cohesiveness of the original, would only recommend for the most diehard of horror movie fans that are craving to watch ANYTHING newer in the genre.

It was a horrible knock off from the original one in the 80s Even the little girl look like the girl from first movie. This girl had black hair the 89's one she had blonde hair. They even had the same hair style. I'm sorry that I ever bought this movie. Zero stars in my book.

Waited for this to go on sale before purchase. Still wasted money. Absolute garbage that i could not stay awake to finish in one shot. They should give away remaining copies for free, but i still could not recommend it to anybody. Not even fun to watch as a joke.

This was the WORST remake I have ever seen of ANY movie. Is Sam Rockwell a terrible actor, or his character just a dim-witted, slow, dry individual? Don't waste your time or money! Watch the classic original instead.

Dear god why did they make this!? Seriously! It was terrible! Doesn't even hold a candle next to the awesomness that is the original. Do your self a favor and don't even bother with this atrocity.

This was just a big disappointment. The story was ridiculous and the characters unbelievable There is no need to remake a classic unless you can match the original.

I was pretty let down by this movie. Maybe it had to much to live up too, but the end result from the acting to pacing is pretty terrible. Was hoping for something better...

I can't believe I even bought this movie before reading any reviews. It was not good at all. The first poltergeist was much much better. No idea why this movie was remade.

It’s being advertised as the original release but it’s the remake

This remake of Poltergeist is awful garbage. Nothing worthwhile about this movie. The disc includes an extended cut of the film for those interested in that.

I’m sorry I tried to watch it in the mindset of not comparing to the original but I just can’t. It was awful and I regret buying it.

Waste of time and $. Remakes are seldom good. This one gets an F. Looked at buying ever since it came out. Wished I had kept it at looking.

Not as scary as original Poltergeist. The 3D effects were some of the worst I have ever seen. Normal picture quality was bad as well.

this is not the movie you think it is but simply another movie with the same name! really upsetting RETURNED!

This movie did not need remaking. It took a movie I loved and left out the heart and didn't deliver the horror...
