Good for one-handing my phone, good for standing it at various angles and orientations. With adapters useful for mounting in a car or hanging on my night stand. The drawbacks include not being able to rest your phone stably on its back, not being able to use other phone accessories (e.g. a dash mount for navigation), and some catching of it within the pocket. Overall pretty nifty invention that is making someone very rich.

Is it a gimmick?

After purchasing this item, I can honestly say that it is very addictive and useful. If you have a larger type smartphone, then it is a no brainer. You can hold the phone more comfortably and reach different parts of screen easier. Also, if you use your device for an extended period of time, you do not have to grip it with your hands as you would without it. It allows your hands to relax. Happy I purchased it.
