Only 2 stars because the movie is good and only 2 stars because the movie came without a slipcover. As a collector, I expect for the movie to be complete.

    Everyone's Favorite Pig

Porco Rosso is one of those anime films that never seem to age with time. Set after the first World War, Porco Rosso was a fighter pilot during World War 1 when he was transferred into a pig by a witch. Produced by Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, this movie sets Porco as a fighter pilot who is hired to protect airplanes from being attacked by sea pirates. While Michael Keaton isn't everyone's favorite actor, he shines in this role, lending his voice to Porco Rosso and instilling a lot of humor and hijinks as he also tried to avoid the Italian military. If you're looking for a great family film to watch with your kids, I recommend this film.

All that needs to be said is that this is a Studio Ghibli movie and thus needs to be watched. Arguably the greatest animation studio and studio in general.

    Don't forget this Miyazaki classic

I bought this movie after watching a few other Miyazaki films (Whisper of the Heart, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.) and reading the other review on this site. My wife and I watched it, and I can say without a doubt that it meets the standard of quality I expected. Don't be put off by the previous review, this is a fantastic movie. Even the least work by a master like Miyazaki is still in a class of it's own. I was confused about the reaction to the ending after watching it myself. I'll avoid spoilers, but I didn't feel cheated and the ending didn't feel rushed. The major issues resolved the ending simply wrapped the story but, rather than draggin out the scenes for another half hour. This leaves more time for the plot to do it's work during the length of the movie. A very traditional ending I walked away with a smile on my face. The matter of the mentioned curse is a simple one. Anyone paying attention to the story should see why Marco is now Porco; some curses don't require a witch and a bubbling cauldron. The resolution is clear enough as well, and ties into the ending and it's handling. The story here is about Porco, not Marco. Don't be put off by bad reviews, this is a fantastic movie.

The art style alone sucked me in, but you really can't go wrong buying a movie made by the legendary Studio Ghibli. Porco Rosso features airplanes and the thrill of flight during the period between World Wars I and II, a theme revisited in "The Wind Rises".

    Expectations Dashed

Porco Rosso, the ninth edition to my Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli collection, contains gorgeous scenery, wonderfully detailed animation with a style all its own, and those special elements, the young heroine, the curse and the wrinkled, old woman, specific to Director Hayao Miyazaki’s movies. It has a humorous, heart-warming cast and an incredible score composed by Joe Hisaishi that enhances the experience of the Italian/Mediterranean setting. YET it is the weakest and least successful of his films. Throughout my first viewing, I kept excitedly asking myself, “How is he going to surprise me?” I guess I got what I wanted because I was surprised. It was completely different from any other ending that I’ve seen from his work. Instead of the normal happy ending where we see the results of the curse's removal, he ends it just before the final fight and chooses to skip forward a few years to have the heroine narrate the conclusion in retrospect. Leaving the ending up to the viewers’ imaginations might have been a good idea had the important subplot been developed. The film did not explain why, when or how Porco was transformed into a pig by a curse. Nor were the specifics of the curse revealed, weakening the overall plot and especially the ending. I expected the ending to resolve these things, but it left me sadly disappointed. P.S. You only get to see Porco’s human face once! That disappointed me too. My shallow soul cries out for a handsome hero!
