This anime has gained so much stardom over the years and is critically acclaimed by thousands. Enjoyable to the last minute. I can't believe Disney put out a movie this violent.

I love ghibli films but this one was a little long for me even for the usual length of his films. Had to watch it in two installments.

Beautiful Battle Between Humanity and Nature

Princess Mononoke is nothing short of a masterpiece. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it’s one of those rare films that combines visual beauty with profound storytelling, leaving a lasting impact long after the credits roll. Set in a fantastical version of Japan, the movie follows Ashitaka, a young prince on a journey to find a cure for a curse, but it quickly unfolds into a powerful exploration of nature, humanity, and the conflicts that arise between them. What makes Princess Mononoke stand out is its complex portrayal of its characters. There are no clear-cut villains here—only deeply motivated characters on opposing sides, each with their reasons and flaws. Lady Eboshi, a leader intent on building her town and protecting her people, and San, the “princess” raised by wolves and determined to protect the forest, are both formidable and sympathetic. The film’s environmental themes are clear without feeling preachy, making it resonate even more strongly today. The animation, as expected from Studio Ghibli, is stunning. Every frame is filled with detail, from lush forests to powerful, fluid fight scenes, all enhanced by Joe Hisaishi's incredible score, which adds an extra layer of emotion and intensity. Ultimately, Princess Mononoke isn’t just a movie—it’s an experience that challenges viewers to think about the world we live in and the balance we need to maintain with nature. It’s haunting, beautiful, and timeless.

Anime Film With Powerful Spiritual Messages

Princess Mononoke is an enjoyable anime film that involves how a young boy’s life is changed once a negative spirit inhabits a large boor and creates chaos in his home village. The young boy named Ashitaka is left with a situation that endangers his life and he ends up crossing paths with a perplexing young woman named San who enchants him with her beauty and who was raised by wolves. Both San and Ashitake end up seeing a lot, such as a forest spirit who has the gift of bringing great healing and saving a living being from dying if the spirit sees that they are meant to live. I’m fortunate to have first watched Princess Mononoke with my husband when we were living in the Jacksonville Florida area (through the U.S. navy).

Hands down my favorite animated movie. Ever!

I had never heard of this movie until about 3 years ago when I woke up at 3 a.m. in front of the tv after a long school week. I saw an anime with English subtitles in front of me and decided to continue watching because I was fond of anime and it seemed interesting, little did I know that I was watching one of the single best films ever created. Within the first 10 minutes every thought of sleep left me and I was engrossed in it until the end at which point I went out the next day with quarters and dimes to buy it anywhere I could. Over the next 18 hours I actually watched it another 5 times because I could simply not get my fill. It is a movie focusing on Man's inability to realize his actions until he's almost too late, even going to such extremes so as to kill a god for the immortality of one, even if thousands must perish. This movie centers around the premise of balance and conservation, something we can all learn from. This is a movie every person should see once, if not more.

All that needs to be said is that this is a Studio Ghibli movie and thus needs to be watched. Arguably the greatest animation studio and studio in general.

    Classic anime on bluray

This classic Miyazaki film is a perfect gift for any anime fan's library. I also recommend it as a great introduction to anime for anyone interested but intimidated by the genre. The plot follows two young humans as they struggle to help find balance between a developing industrial society and the spirits of the natural world. My only criticism of this blu ray release is the lack of a digital copy. However, at the time of this review, the film is not offered in digital format from any providers.

This is my favorite movie! The characters are well-developed, the story is riviting, and the animation in breath-taking. There is a great story line behind this (as in most miyazaki films) and even if you aren't that much into animation, this movie goes above and beyond expectations. I recommend anybody that just loves to watch movies should definitaly go out and buy this movie. It is not a waste!!

The classic 1999 film now remastered for Bluray and does it look amazing as ever! Now here is an Anime film that could be easily recommended for many kinds of viewers. Whether you are a fan of Miyazaki films or not, the film is a classic and must have for a reason, for new comers or collectors. The art and visual style is amazing. The story is gripping with a lot of depth. An allegory that depicts the balance of Nature and Man.

An original from the brilliant mind of Hayao Miyazaki. This movie explores Feudal Japan filled with demons and spirits which clash perfectly with the Samurai of that time to make a magical adventure on par with any Disney movie. Hayao Miyazaki is a brilliant animator with a mind for bringing beautiful creations to life through animation.

Princess Mononoke is one of Studio Ghibli's best anime, and although not appropriate for younger audiences it has very thought provoking and non-sugar coated themes. The bluray release is an excellent transfer ... the video quality is very true to the source material and the audio mix is superb. If you are a fan of this film or anime in general I consider this a "must have" to your HD film collection.

You do not have to be a fan of animation to enjoy this film. This is not a "kiddie" movie. This is a great story that happens to have a great message about saving the earth.
