A gustatory journey through Paris
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ratatouille, from Pixar and Brad Bird (The Incredibles and The Iron Giant), is a rat's-eye view of the gastronomic delights of fine cuisine (the name itself is a pun on the classic French roast vegetable dish ratatouille). Remy is a young rat who discovers that he has a heightened sense of taste and smell, and becomes inspired by the late television chef Auguste Gusteau (Brad Garrett), whose motto "anyone can cook" now extends to rats, too. Remy begins to experiment with combining classic combinations of flavor and texture, herbs, and other ingredients, until his clan is forced to flee their country safehouse. During the traumatic escape, Remy is separated from his family. The ghost of Chef Gusteau appears to Remy when he is discouraged, inspiring him to cook at Gusteau's formerly-five star restaurant. The acid restaurant critic Anton Ego (Peter O'Toole) made it his personal mission to write a scathing review of Gusteau's that stripped it of one of its Michelin stars, consigning it to the tourist trade. Now, the restaurant is under the iron fist of the shady, domineering Head Chef Skinner (Ian Holm). Remy befriends the bumbling, couldn't-boil-water-if-his-life-depended-on-it Alfredo Linguini, whom Skinner grudgingly adopted as the new garbage boy, and Remy and Linguini team up to create culinary delights that astound the normally staid French restaurant critics. Remy controls Linguini by hiding under his chef's toque and tugging on two strands of hair (the scenes of Remy perfecting his technique with a blindfolded Linguini wielding dangerous tools and messy ingredients are priceless). Toss in a handful of intrigue, kitchen highjinks, father-son bonding, a dash of romance with the formidable chef Colette, and plenty of culinary delights, and you have Ratatouille. The 3D animation is photorealistic, and 360 shots of nighttime Paris entrance. Small touches really capture the Bohemian feel of the Montmartre district, and the soundtrack features (brief) snippets of La Marseillaise, light and airy French themes, and French-language vocals by Camille (the standalone soundtrack Ratatouille is available for purchase). As with The Incredibles, there's lots to keep kids engaged (although the scene with the window full of dead rats might be traumatic for very young kids), and a whole other layer of adult humor bubbling under the surface, so mom and dad will be able to enjoy Ratatouille with gusto.

Magnifique!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best animated features ever made. PIXAR outdid themselves with this one. Ratatouille tells the tale of a rat named Remy who dreams of being a chef and a guy named Linguini who finds direction with Remy's help. This may sound bizarre, but the story is told brilliantly with a great deal of emotion. Excellent balance of humor and drama. It's perfect for children and adults, excellent family viewing. As with any PIXAR film, the animation is astounding. Everything is superbly rendered and fluidly animated. The ainmation really shines with the Blu-Ray transfer, everything is crystal clear and in very sharp focus. Yet another flawless HD experience from Disney. The extras chronicle the making of the film, including input from real life chefs and even some reference footage of pet rats. There's also a coking game where you try to follow recipies and keep up with demand. There are also two animatred shorts. 'Lifted', which was shown in theaters with Ratatouille, is the story of an alien who struggles to pass his 'Human Abduction' test and 'You're friend the Rat!', a great show hosted by Remy and his brother Emile about the natural history of the rat. Your friend the Rat features old-school 2D animation reminscent of the animation Ward Kimble created for 'Walt Disney Presents'. Remy and Emile sing a nice song and try to convince you that Humans and Rats can live in harmony. This is one of PIXAR's all-time best and is the kind of movie you can watch over and over again. A perfect movie for the entire family to watch and an essential for any Blu-Ray collection.

Pixar serves yet another classic up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Another classic has been added to the Pixar list. This time the story follows a rat who feels differently about being a rat than his family. He and his father have two opposing views on what they are eating and the humans. One day while searching for ingredients in the kitchen, where his father told him not to be specifically, he was caught. This leads to the discovery of the colony, where all the rats live. They are forced out and separated from one another. Now that the rat is alone, he feels he might have a chance to live a life that his father warned him against: a chef. Granted it would be difficult for a rat to be a chef for humans without a little help, and so he befriends a human who has no cooking talent to become a great team. This movie is a wonderful story. You might say that a rat controlling a person by tugging on his hair might just be a touch unreal, but it being an animated film opens up a few more possibilities. There is a thought behind the story, and is taught throughout the film several times. This thought is the fact that anyone can do anything. If they had done the film about a person who eventually becomes a successful chef, it would not have had the same impact on the audience. But, by using a rat, (let’s face it, a rat isn’t high on the food chain or thought of well by people) it conveys a little better.
