    Top-up at Tesla Destination Chargers

While the NACS plug is quickly becoming the standard for EV charging in the US, nearly all existing EVs, that are not Teslas, currently use the J1772/CCS standard. These cars can only charge at Tesla Superchargers that have been updated with a Magic Dock but there’s still a lot of lower-powered chargers for topping up while driving around. For ultimate flexibility in charging at any L2 charger, this Rexing adapter allows non-Teslas to add some range at Tesla Destination chargers when on-the-go. Pros: * Solid build quality. * Small size fits easily in even the smallest frunk or glove box. * Comes with a hard carrying case. * Has a keyed lock for the car side with 3 keys. * Has a friction lock for the Tesla plug side. Cons: * Case has a loose and awkward foam frame inside. * Could be devastating if you loose the keys once plugged in. Short review for those who are familiar with the needs and benefits of an NACS-to-J1772 adapter… this Rexing adapter works great! It is solidly built, has a nice carrying case and can be locked to prevent removal or theft. It allows charging from Tesla Destination Chargers at up to 80A speeds and is definitely a must-have for charging flexibility for cars that aren’t a Tesla like my Polestar 2. For those new to EV charging… There are currently two standards for charging an electric car in the US (not worth including CHAdeMO that’s basically just for the Nissan Leaf); J1772/CCS and Tesla’s now-renamed NACS. There are also essentially two types of charging; fast chargers and home/destination chargers. Fast Chargers (aka Level 3 chargers) and typically not free, are located off highways or places similar to gas stations and charge up to 80% in 30 minutes or less. Slower chargers (aka Level 2 chargers) are typically installed at homes, shopping areas or hotels and usually add about 25-30 miles per hour of charging. While most EV owners charge at home with an installed charger that supports their car’s specific needs, sometimes when you’re out driving around, there is an opportunity to add a few extra miles at local public charging spots while shopping or staying at a hotel or workplace. These spots can usually add enough range to make it worthwhile to plug in but you have to have the right plug for your car. If you happen to find yourself near one of these slower chargers that has an NACS plug and your car is not a Tesla, this Rexing adapter will allow you to plug in and get some extra range. The adapter accepts the NACS plug from a Tesla Destination Charger (NOT compatible with Tesla SuperChargers) and then plugs in to your car’s J1172/CCS port. There is a keyed lock available to prevent someone from disconnecting it from your car; just be aware that this doesn’t prevent someone from disconnecting the Tesla end from the adapter. There is a small friction button that can help keep the Tesla end from sliding out, but anyone can still pull it free if they want to. Also be aware that many cars like my Polestar 2 lock the charging plug (the adapter, in this case) from being removed when the car is charging and the doors are locked. If you happen to lock the adapter with the key, you’ll need to unlock both the physical key and the car’s plug lock. The lock comes with 3 keys but be careful because if you lock the adapter and loose the keys, you might not be able to remove the adapter from your car. You can at least remove the Tesla Destination Charger cable and can still drive away, but you’ll have your charge door open with the adapter sticking out. When not in use, there’s a nice carrying case to keep the adapter and the keys together and protected. The case has a foam insert to keep the adapter inside from rolling around, but the foam insert isn’t glued in so it just pops out when you open the case. This isn’t a huge deal, but it would have been nice if the foam insert were a more snug fit or glued in. It would also have been a nice touch to put hook-type Velcro on the bottom of the case so it would stick to the fuzzy insides of most trunks and frunks and not slide around. Be sure to connect the Destination Charger’s NACS cable to the adapter first and wait for the Tesla Destination charger to recognize the adapter before plugging them into your car. This took only a few seconds and everything worked great with my car immediately starting to charge. While charging at DC fast chargers adds more range in less time, destination chargers can be a convenient and useful way to just top up your range and are usually free. With this sturdy and fast Rexing adapter, you can have flexibility to charge at nearly all Level 2 chargers; whether they match your car’s J1772 plug or the NACS plug (currently just Teslas).

First of all, a huge shout out to Rexing for their incredible customer service. I received a damaged adapter. So, I immediately sent an email to Best Buy who contacted Rexing on my behalf. Rexing sent me a replacement adapter within a week. That is an awesome customer service. All I had to do was take pictures of the damaged adapter and send them. Now on to the actual product: Great adapter to have when you can’t find a charging station with your charger. Comes with a carrying case and a set of keys to lock this adapter to your vehicle while charging to avoid theft. Easy to take when traveling without taking up too much space. This Tesla to J1772 Charging Adapter is a must-have for EV owners with a J1772 charging port as in my Mustang Mach-e. This brilliant technology extends the expansive network of Tesla Destination Chargers to non-Tesla vehicles, significantly improving access to having a place to charge. Whether at a hotel, bed & breakfast or even a restaurant, the thousands of privately owned Tesla Destination chargers nationwide become readily available for your charging needs. The first impression as the product arrived was positive due to the great packaging. This attention to detail ensured the adapter was delivered in perfect condition and set the tone for the high-quality experience to follow. I was particularly impressed by the storage case included in the package. It's a thoughtful touch, offering protection for the adapter when not in use, shielding it from potential damage, and facilitating easy transport. The build quality of the adapter is superb, showing promise of withstanding regular use without compromising its functionality. The sturdy construction assures durability and long-term reliability. In terms of usability, the Rexing adapter scores high. The simplicity of its operation ensures a seamless experience, even for those who might be using such an adapter for the first time. Performance-wise, the adapter delivered an impressive 8.5kW during my usage. This efficiency means more time on the road and less time tethered to a charging point. Please take note that this adapter is not compatible with Tesla Super Chargers. Its design is specifically for Tesla Destination Chargers and performs exceptionally in that role. In conclusion, the Rexing Tesla to J1772 EV charging adapter Charging Adapter is an essential accessory for non-Tesla EV owners seeking to benefit from Tesla Destination Chargers. Its robust build, ease of use, and extended charging options make it a five-star product.

This is going to be a pretty short and sweet review. I have to drive all over the place with my Chevy Bolt and while in MOST of the places, there is a pretty good infrastructure in place for both regular and DC charging, I do head off into the wilds of California where it becomes a little more limited. What I DO find out there are quite a few hotels that have Tesla destination chargers and this Rexing adaptor is going to make my life a bit easier. My wife and I also head up to our friends farm in the Central Valley and there is very little charging infrastructure around them except their home charger for their Tesla. In the past, we just took my wife's car because it is an ICE and we don't have to worry, but we have been putting a lot of miles on it would like to spread that out a bit. Now I can plug into their home charger with no problems. I haven't gone anywhere recently so I just asked if I could test it out on my neighbors home charger and it worked like a charm on the first try. I like that it comes with a nice case AND that it has a lock to keep some yahoo from stealing it for their own CCS equipped vehicle, which is something I worried about with another adaptor that I thought about getting. All in all, this is well worth the price if for no other reason than the peace of mind. But for me, it is going to make travel into the more remote areas of the state a whole lot easier.

A simple way to open up more options for charging

The biggest hurdle for EV ownership is being able to charge no matter where you go, and at times those options are limited. Having an adapter like this opens up Tesla destination chargers and wall connectors for use with a vehicle that uses the J1772 connection. While it does not have the capacity for a Tesla supercharger, it will be a good thing to have in a pinch. It comes in a small zipper case that easily fits in a glove box or center console. Using it is easy and straightforward, simply plug it into the Tesla charger first, give it 30 seconds to recognize the connector, then plug in your EV. I tried it out for the first time at a hotel that had Tesla wall connectors available and got 7kW of power to my vehicle which was about right for a 32A level 2 charger. If you need to charge for a longer session and will leave your vehicle unattended it has a few keys and can be locked to the port on the car itself. This won’t stop someone from unplugging the Tesla end, but it will at least prevent the adapter from being stolen. It is IP54 rated so it can get rained on with no trouble. Thankfully since it’s very compact it extends the total plug length by a minimal amount so the charge door on my car was still longer while open than the plug with the adapter connected. This should help prevent an accident such as someone bumping into it while plugged in. Reliable charging is important for driving an EV, and having this adapter handy gives me additional options and flexibility wherever I go. It doesn’t take up much space and works like a charm. Supercharging is not possible but otherwise it’ll get up to 80A level 2 power to you. Every J1772 EV owner should have one of these in their vehicle just in case they need it.

Really happy with this little adapter. It's sleek, compact, has a nice storage box, and it is ready to save the day. We both drive electric cars and have a single level 2 CCS charger installed at home. One of our cars has about 280 miles of range, while the other has half that, at about 140 miles of range. We live in the SF Bay Area and there are plenty of public chargers throughout the region. However, the city in which I work has no public chargers installed and there have been some tense moments when it was the other car's turn to charge the previous evening (we charge at night when electricity is the cheapest). My mother lives in the town where I work, and being able to hook up the car for a level 1 charge has rescued me a couple times, but, as much as I love my mom, getting home is very preferable. She drives a Tesla and has a level 2 Tesla charger. This adapter is exactly what we've been waiting for. The adapter connects quickly and easily to both the car and to the charger. My car locks the charger down when it's in charge mode, but, even if it didn't, there's a locking mechanism on the adapter so that it can't be removed without the key. And the charging is exactly as fast as you'd expect it to be. TL/DR, this little unit works great and substantially expands your ability to find electric car chargers. Until they come up with a universal standard for electric car chargers, I will never be without this fantastic little gadget.

I have had some experience with Rexing dash cams and even had a couple of contacts with their customer service and really like their products and the service they provide. I didn't know that they made electric vehicle charging adapters but was really excited when I found out. I knew that odds are that it will be a great product by a company that stands by its product. When I first open the box I was surprised that it came it a very sturdy carrying case with a foam cushion that protects the adapter. Taking it out the first thing I noticed that the adapter came with keys which I soon realized goes to the adapter that has a lock on it. Very cool. If you happen to be charging your vehicle at a public Tesla charging station, you can lock it and walk away with confidence knowing no one can easily steal the adapter. The unit itself feels very weighty and well constructed which gives me knowledge that it can probably take a beating and will last a long time. There are also grooves in the side where you can firmly place your fingers to attach the unit to the tesla charger and also to put in and remove from your vehicle. The adapter fit perfectly in my Honda Clarity J1772 charging port, just like the oem one. And as for the charging time, I used a neighbors level 2 Tesla charger and it charged the same as the one I had at my house. For me, the ability to charge my non tesla vehicle at like, a friends house, makes this adapter worth every penny.

This is a very simple product for a very specific purpose that works great. I have an Ioniq 5 and while I generally charge at CCS chargers, I sometimes would like to use Level 2 chargers (especially free ones) at stores or hotels and places. While many of these already have J1772 connectors, some do not and some places have like 2 stations of each kind and if all the J1772 stations are in use, I couldn't use the Tesla ones even if they were open. Enter this little gadget from Rexing and now I can use any of those chargers. It's easy to use - you just plug the NACS Tesla charger into this one from Rexing. Wait about 30 seconds (this is to give the charging station time to recognize the adapter). Then plug it into your J1772 plug and you're all set. A cool feature of this is that it also has a lockable latch so you can lock it down after connecting it to your car so that someone can't come along and unplug it. The adapter also comes with a nice carrying case which makes it easy to store in your car. And it's quite small so doesn't take up a lot of space at all - easily storable in the glove box, in the trunk under the mat in my car, or in the tiny little frunk I have. Overall a simple and excellent product from REXING. I had not previously heard of this company, but based on this product, they seem to make good stuff.

I have a Tesla and I know where the stations are and for my other electric vehicle I had to go out of my way to charge it so this adapter is the solution. The adapter is small so it is easy to put away or use it fits on the palm of my hand and it is light to carry, just know that it does not work with the Supercharger. It comes in its case so it does not get scratched and the key can be stored away there. It is fast since it charges with speeds up to 20khw and it does come with voltage of 250V and amperage of up to 80A. I also like that it does come with a safety lock and 4 keys, it does not have to be locked but it is an option to lock and walk away and since it has plenty of keys perhaps one can stay inside the case or in the vehicle. I also like that if I have any problems I can contact Rexing. Overall I like how convenient it is to go to more charging stations with my non Tesla vehicle, I am able to lock into place and it is worry free, I cant believe I have been charging without this adapter.

Charger adapter to get power from Tesla ports.

Need a little help in broadening your charging power placement potential? From what I understand, and this information is about as fresh and long lasting as a loaf of bread, Tesla, will, in the somewhat near future, be providing adapters on or near their chargers to accommodate non-Tesla charging for a growing cadre of cars. However, as this technology implementation takes its sweet time rolling out, Rexing is offering this adapter to allow your non-Tesla to take advantage of all of the Tesla chargers out there with the exception of Superchargers (that use an incompatible electrical signal for this type of connection). As the type of charging available to this adapter is limited to the slower Level 1 and 2 speeds due to the J1772 connector from the non-Tesla world, it’s unlikely that this adapter will be helping significantly in long range travel, in that charging times will be similar to that of charging through a home charger. So, it should be taking a far sight longer to charge a depleted battery than the time it takes to eat your lunch as it would with a Supercharger. It would, however, be great for overnight charging at a hotel (aka Destination charging, per Tesla) or at your friend’s house using their Tesla charger (aka Wall Connector, per Tesla). Lastly, the Tesla Mobile connector could also be adapted for use with this device as well. The adapter ships in a compact cardboard box that contains a very convenient, durable, fabric, padded, storage container for tucking safely away in your vehicle. In addition to the case, there are a set of four identical keys used to lock the adapter to the car in case your car model doesn’t have a locking system for the charging cable. The union between the adapter and the Tesla cable is another matter. On the bottom of the charger adapter, there is a sliding latch mechanism that locks onto the Tesla charging cable to avoid naughtily-intentioned charge disruption to the easily-fooled, but would be defeated easily by simply moving the latch to unlock and then remove the Tesla charging cable without the permission or knowledge of the original charger/user. I suppose there was a discussion in designing this that argued about the disadvantages of having it be removable by others versus the possibility of someone locking the cable onto an adapter and then losing a key, which would retain the adapter onto the cable indefinitely. So, the uncharged victim of a charger switcharoo discovered in the morning of an overnight stay at a destination charger, can take solace in the fact that they at least didn’t cause any lasting mayhem by accidently locking up the cable. Small consolation that you could ponder for the time it would take to search out a non-Tesla supercharger equivalent so you could be on your way. So, in use, you just connect the adapter onto the Tesla cable and slide the mechanical latch to secure it and wait for 30 seconds for the two of them to make proper introductions (per Rexing’s advice) and then insert the adapter into your car’s J1772 jack. If you choose to use the lock to lock the charger to your car, do that, or use your car’s locking mechanism, if it has one. The rest of the charging should begin and just chug along as normal. From what I understand, the Tesla Destination locations typically provide power for free (for now, subject to change in the future) to the user and is sponsored by the location owner to foster patronage of that establishment, which typically is a hotel/motel, restaurant or other business. So, does it work? Yes. Is it worth it? If the answer relies on how much peace of mind it brings you to know that you’ve increased your potential charge locations by a significant degree, then yes. Recommended? Yes, very much so. Just keep in mind that the need for this adapter from a commercial perspective might be moot in the future, as Tesla has announced plans to support providing adapters for some of the charger devices in their networks in the future. But even if that does transpire, there is always the occasional situation where you might need to access a privately owned Tesla charger and then you will be thankful to have it. The only reservations I have about the charger is the quality of the material used in the body of the unit. There are very small minor abnormalities in the molded parts that may translate to issues with extended or cold weather use, but only time will tell how it holds up under use.

Upon opening the package, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of everything. The case was actually sturdy and solid. And I was very surprised that it actually came with four sets of keys to lock it in place while charging. I use it with my 2018 Ford fusion energy and can charge my 9kw battery in roughly 30 min compared to 4 and a half hours if i used my plug at home. Very happy with this adapter. Just hope I dont lose all 4 keys….
