If you loved the original Planet of the Apes movies, you may not like the new series re-boot. But then again, if you liked the old movies then it may be safe to assume you are a fan of sci-fi, Hollywood films, or interesting stories. This new series is definitely interesting and great movie fun. It has great special effects and even better performances. It takes the Christopher Nolan approach on re telling the origin story by grounding it in a plausible reality. That's the makings of good sci-fi. It lacks the existential 70's flavor of the original films but does an amazing job of introducing a familiar story to new audiences using effects that go way beyond actors wearing masks. The new film only adds to this awesome new series, but this movie is a must for series collectors and anyone who wants a fun movie night. I highly recommend getting this one on Blu-ray.

This film took me and everyone by surprise. I don't think anyone had positive expectations leading into this after the terrible TIm Burton/Mark Wahlberg version in 1999. But I went into it with an open mind and was blown away. It was so great to see this world get an origin story and to see how and why the apes evolved. The performance capture technology is breathtaking. Andy Serkis is amazing and that man should be nominated for and Oscar at some point if they will every consider performance capture legitimate. You could see and feel all the emotions that Caesar was experiencing throughout. So convincing. He was even better in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes(which is even better!!)

Fun new edition of the 'Apes' franchise

Yes, humans are beastly creatures and Charlton Heston deserved what he got in the original 'back to the future' installment. Hollywood's CGI chops are prodigious; we've come a long way from Roddy McDowell's crazy rubber mask. But I confess it felt a bit sterile at times. Clearly someone wrote a new algorithm for breaking glass, so they had to use it over and over. And over. We should conclude that, in addition to getting high-octane brains, the new and improved apes are also made of Kevlar. Those chimps exploded through more glass than a Lawrence Kasdan saloon brawl. But we're all cheering for our newly enlightened cousins, even though we know they'll be hunting us for sport and tearing down Lady Liberty within a few generations. This is a roar of a good time.

This movie is a breeze to sit through. Basically a prison escape movie from the Apes' perspective, this kick-started what is (IMO) one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time. This is probably the most accessible and least dark of the newer Apes movies but that doesn't mean this entry holds back. As always, these type of epics look great on 4k and this doesn't disappoint. Also includes the digital copy and blu-ray with special features that are worth delving into.

I didn't have many expectations coming into this movie after the awful Tim Burton remake. I found "Rise..." on blu-ray for five dollars on sale at my local Best Buy. I was surprised to find I enjoyed it. That's the long and short of it: I liked it. Andy Serkis is an amazing performance capture artist. James Franco turns in a pretty bland performance, but he's serviceable as a likable good guy. The antagonists are all pretty straight-forward greedy corporate scumbags or nasty, sniveling zookeepers. They're human plot points, driving the story toward the inevitable conclusion. It's a point A to point B tale, with Serkis as a compelling emotional lynchpin. I'm looking forward to the next film, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", and that's saying something.

This movie surprised me. I was familiar with the original movies from years ago. And while I enjoyed them, the first one in particular, I wasn't clamoring for a prequel or reboot... So I was pleasantly surprised when a bunch of us went to see it on a whim. The story was so engaging, and combined with the amazing motion capture performance of Andy Serkis, resulted in a fantastic movie going experience. And now I am glad to own the steelbook, as the case art is very striking, indeed... Highly recommended!

I am more a fan of the original Planet of the apes movies from the 60's and 70's but this new take is very modern and you should consider how laboratory animals are treated. Great performances and the apes will get your emotions going. Technically brilliant, the movie takes you right into the apes feelings, they are real characters, you ll laugh you ll cry but you won't kiss your money goodby - it's a wonderful ride of a film. Fine quality and has some great behind the scenes features.

    A Great Prequel

I'm not particularly fond of the TIm Burton remake of Planet of the Apes, so when I saw that we were getting another movie based around that universe, I was a little underwhelmed. Fortunately, I rented the film and was pleasantly surprised. Andy Serkis, as usual, delivers a fantastic performance as lead ape Caesar. Additionally James Franco is animated and lively in his role. My only particular gripe might be that the film drags a bit toward the end of the second act - otherwise, this is a great film that shouldn't be missed.

Good Movie Choice/ Poor Case Design

Saw War for the Planet of the Apes in theaters and decided to purchase the prequels of the film (which I had never watched). I bought this when it was on sale ($7.99).The quality of the blu ray movie is great and the story was very interesting and enjoyable; however this is only getting a 4/5 stars from me because of the Eco-Case, which I find ridiculous. The case is weak and flimsy and there are large portions of the plastic removed. You have to be careful when dislodging the disc because you might accidentally break it. If you were to lightly press the case, you'd feel how weak it is.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a surprise. I had not expected to like it as much as I did, but on a friends recommendation I got the Blu-Ray over Black Friday. The plot was quite interesting, the CGI was terrific, and as a fan of film music, I thought that was done quite well too. This Apes film is much better than at least 3 of the other previous Apes films that have come before. I recommend for a good afternoon of movie watching.

The modern Planet of the Apes trilogy started with this one! Unlike the original series of movies from the 70's, this series has gotten better with each new film (War for the Planet of the Apes is the most current at the time of writing). And this was a solid start which starts to answer the question how did the apes come to rule the planet? Solid performance all around and ground-breaking (at the time) motion capture for Ceasar. Even if you don't love this film on its own it serves as a great act 1 for the current generation of PotA films. Give it a watch!

This movie was much better then the ones made years ago. It was the type of movie that made you laugh and cry at different times. I felt sorry for the apes in the laboratory as they were innocent victims. They ended up being smarter than the humans after being injected with the experimental drug. James Franco was very good in this movie. The actor who portrayed Caesar was excellent. I have watched this movie at least 10 times and will probably watch it again in the near future.

If you saw and appreciated the original Planet of the Apes series then this is an absolute must see. If you are not familiar with it, but like science fiction and woud be interested to see how scientific experimentation can go awry like in Jurassic Park then you should check this out. This was a good movie for Norton and I would watch it again. I give it a 4.5. I would not only recommend it to a friend, but I purchased extra copies to give out as Christmas gifts (among other blu-rays).

Die-hard Planet of the Apes fans might find a million and one reasons to hate this film but if you step away from the lore of the franchise, you'll find an enjoyable film experience taking you to the very origins of the Ape conquest of Earth. Aside from the sci-fi elements, it's also a story about the price of freedom and respect for our fellow mammals (or else they'll flip out on us).

With the new APES movie now in theaters, I had to catch up and I have not seen this since it was first released years back so bought it with the sequel and watched this as soon as i got home and I loved this movie. Maybe even better then the sequel (dawn). You really feel for the characters in this movie. Especially Ceaser (the ape) and now can not wait to see the new movie in theaters (war). id give 10 stars if i could.

I can't say this is a five star movie but it does rank as my favorite of the Planet movies. It has far more story to it than the others. I found myself caring for some of the characters including the apes. For those of us who are old enough to remember the original Planet of the apes. it will remind you how far technology has improved the special effects. Worth buying, which is not much more than renting used to be.

After seeing several hundreds of movies in my lifetime, I've only been part of a tiny select few that got an ovation afterwards. This is one of those few! Even if you were not a big fan before, you will be. It does a wonderful job of explaining how Planet of Apes become. I don't want to reveal to much for you but it certainly does a great job linking it all together. A must see.

I was doubtful that a reboot of the classic Planet of the Apes series could be successful, but the team behind Rise pulled it off. The cast is good, and the apes are generally convincing as far as looks and movement goes. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes improves on this movie and makes the apes look and act even more realistic. I hope the series keeps going and covers the enslavery of humans, nuclear bomb cults, and all the other stuff that made the original series so fun. The Blu-ray is great, with some good special features, and excellent picture and sound quality.

I purchased this Blu-ray, and I'm very happy with it. James Franco was excellent in this film, and the movie was great. The purchase included movie money towards "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" Which I also went to see. James Franco wasn't in that film, only a few flash back scenes. This movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a much better actual film. The Acting. Probably because of the work of James Franco. This is an excellent film, and I'd recommend it. There are a lot of bonus material. Including 11 Deleted Scenes. Released in 2011 / 105 Mins. Rated PG-13
