Great look at a grittier side of Star Wars
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Rogue One gives us a great "boots on the ground" look at the Star Wars Universe. The story steers clear of Jedi characters in favor of regular soldier-type characters and gives us a grittier look at what the war looks like from the view of the grunts. The film gets off to a bit of a slow start, jumping from location to location and making it difficult to truly get to know the characters 100%, and a small section in the middle seems like a piece of another side plot which was abandonded. However, the film quickly finds its footing and the main characters get their due. Unfortunately some of the other characters never quite get the screen time they deserve, but all is made better by the amazing third act, which makes for an amazing payoff for the film. The third act is one of the greatest sequences in Star Wars, and includes what may be my favorite scene in the saga. Is it perfect? No, but it is a great film, and a worthy addition to the franchise.

Fantastic!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really enjoyed this film. I grew up watching the originals. Watched Return Of The Jedi in the theater. This movie really reminded me of the old original 3 films. The picture quality was fantastic! I read that some were complaining about grain, set your sharpness right and you'll see no grain. Your sharpness should never be at 10. Most 4k tvs are good to go and need no sharpness at all. 0 Im watched this film on my Optoma 4k projector and 120" screen. No grain at all. My sharpness is set to 4. Set your tv to cinema mode. Turn your brightness down to 50 or 0 on projector. If your watching it in vivid mode with your sharpness at 10, most films will look over saturated and grainy. As far as the 7.1 sound. I had no issues at all getting 5.1 through my Pioneer Elite Receiver. Excellent film. Great experience. Can't wait to watch Solo next week.

Excellent Go-Between
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Rogue One turned out to be one of the best movies in the Star Wars series. Even though it was technically a "standalone" film, it turned out to be a terrific bridge between SW III Revenge of the Sith and SW IV A New Hope. There were some inconsistencies between Rogue One and A New Hope in regard to how the plans for the Death Star were obtained but they hardly mattered. The overlap and flow between A New Hope's opening scene and Rouge One's closing was very well done. I'm sure that everyone got a warm feeling when, in Rogue One the plans were handed off to Princess Leia, even with a CG image of Carrie Fisher. The Blu-ray was technically very good but I can't wait for the new 4K version being released on March 31st.

Great movie

Disagree with the editorial
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I whole heatedly disagree with the long winded soapbox editorial given in the description on Best Buy online. This may be one of, if not the best, Star Wars movie to date. It has brought back to me all the joy I experienced with the first 2 movies that started it all. It has all the elements you'd expect in a Star Wars movie with solid action and special effects to please all. Much better than episode 7 of late. I can only hope that this is a better sign to come for the movies as the directing, acting and script lived up to the hype. After all, "rebellions are built on hope".

Best Star Wars movie since ESB!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie was excellent! It was dark like ESB and had very memorable characters. I wish the prequel trilogy had been more like this!

Episode 3.5
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Being the first non-episodic film, it was hard to know what to expect. Going into the last months leading up to its release, small details leaked out here and there from the studio, such as the lack of an opening crawl. Smaller items like this admittedly did throw me a bit off when seeing the film for the first time. Upon repeating viewings though, these small details meant nothing. The story itself was one I was hoping would somehow get told ever since seeing the first film growing up. The overall story was fairly predictable as the eventual ending is the only way it could really go, and the only one that makes sense. There are several easter eggs sprinkled throughout the film, from locations to cameos. There was one or two that took me out of a the film for a moment, but other than that felt natural. There is a good blend of humor throughout, usually balancing out a fight or a darker moment. All said, this film is worth to have the Star Wars name behind it.

An amazing and exciting film.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I saw "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" in theatres last week and I think that it is once again one of the greatest "Star Wars" films of all-time and it's also one of my favorite films of all-time. I've been a fan of the entire "Star Wars" film series and this film had a lot of entertaining and enjoyable action, mystery, suspense and drama including a really great and amazing cast, plot and storylines as well.

Fails to live up to TFA's 3D
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like Rogue One better than The Force Awakens (TFA), by a lot. When TFA was re-released in 3D late last year it got rave reviews for it's reference quality 3D. Having and 4K OLED TV and a new appreciation for 3D, The Force Awakens Collectors Edition with a 3D copy of the movie, was an obvious buy. Not to mention I am a long term Star Wars fan and love all of it (Rebels and Clone Wars included). Despite buying the Collectors Edition on it's release day I couldn't bring myself to watch it. I don't really like TFA, and really only bought the movie for the 3D. The original releases didn't offer 4k, 3D, or object based audio, and one of which is required for me to purchase a disc these days. I'd seen TFA twice in 2D at an AMC Dolby Cinema in (alleged) Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and once more as a disc rental around the original release in April 2016. I still just didn't really like it. (I'll stop here for brevity, about why). But with the 3D release of Rogue One coming out I decided to finally get around to watching the TFA 3D a few days before Rogue's release. I'd also seem Rogue twice in the theater, but both times in 3D. Once at a Dolby Cinema and the second at a new 4k laser IMAX. This made it hard to compare technically to the TFA as I had only ever seen TFA in 2D, and only seen Rogue in 3D. As I sat down to watch TFA in 3D I wondered if it's reference level reviews would keep me from fast forwarding through the stupid parts. It did. TFA gave the best 3D presentation I had ever seen. I was blown away by the levels of depth given to the picture. Hyperspace that appeared to go to infinity. Regular scenes were the foreground felt right at your feet, the mountains miles away, and each object in-between with it's own perfect depth. No pop-up book feel where lazy 2D-3D transfers just bunch a lot of near-objects into the same depth, which can make the 3D feel fake and artificial depending on the scene. This reference 3D actually made me like the movie better. I told a friend it made the movie jump from a 2/5 to a 2.5/5. I had great hopes that this Rogue One Steelbook I was getting the next day would also add that much more, to a movie I already liked. I would be disappointed. Now, Rogue One isn't bad 3D, nor does it detract from the movie. The last act has some very cool scenes where the cameras "attached" to the Xwings in the Scarif battle show a tremendous perspective of the action and the depth of the shield gate, the planet below and all the ships of both fleets circling around. It makes me wonder how good the opening scene of Episode III would look in 3D! However, the range of depth and levels of 3D in the film is nowhere near what the TFA's 3D transfer offers. In fact, in the first 2/3rds of Rogue, I would argue the 3D version is almost pointless. Sure there's some star destroyers, Jeddah long-shots, and Death Star ogling but none of this looks any better than your average 3D film. The pop-up book effect is present in the opening sequence when the Krennic's shuttle glides across a planetary ring. The rings in this scene feel flat and the shuttle seems like a closer flat speck on the screen. A Star Wars shuttle when filmed from most angle, with it's tri-wing design, should feel like a sharp object you can touch. Those rings around the planet should wrap off into the distance. Instead the shuttle felt like a cardboard cutout being hovered by fishing line in-front of a (very well done) high school diorama. Pop-up book. To be fair, it hadn't looked that much better in the theater. TFA was theatrically released in mostly 2D, and the 3D conversion was given a year. Disney had a whole year (or more) to work on the 3D conversion and what they created was a reference level 3D presentation. Rogue surprised many by conversely being a mostly 3D release. (The prior mentioned Dolby Cinemas with their 4K laser projections had only once before shown a 3D movie: 2016's "Jungle Book" which went on to win the academy award for visual effects). Rogue had notorious rewrites and re-shoots which meant a time crunch for 3D conversion before release. This showed in the 3D transfer that was released in the theater, and I'm not sure anything was done further for the disc release. Where TFA had a year to perfect their 3D master, Rogue seemed to have a month. I still like Rogue better than TFA as a film, but if I am craving some 3D Star Wars, Rogue is not the disc I am going to choose.

If You Want 3D Rogue One...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review....this is the version to get! I spent a lot of time researching the packaging options for Rogue One. Target and Best Buy are the only places where the exclusive includes the 3D disc but Target's exclusive was in a digibook that was huge and awkward. Best Buy has the steelbook, and while I'm not keen on steelbooks, the slimmer packaging made the decision easier. If you want Rogue One in 3D, go with the Best Buy exclusive!

Amazing Steelbook!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie was great so this review will be about the steel book. I liked the design. It is very sleek and has nice cool colors which compliments that Dark Troopers. I would've preferred if the cover was the rebels and the backside were troopers but I like it like this as well. It comes with a digital copy, bluray, dvd and a special features disc. This is a must have for steel book collectors and star wars fans.

Great story, awesome new characters
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Rogue One is a classic action-adventure tale. Even if you're not a big Star Wars fan, this film should engage you and keep you on the edge of your seat. There are so many great performances and the special effects are incredible, as you would expect from a Star Wars film. The steelbook packaging is really awesome, so if you're a collector it's worth the extra bucks.

A fun, different addition to a familiar franchise
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the most gritty, brutal Star Wars film to date and the last hour of the movie provides some of the greatest action the franchise has to offer. Although the depth of the characters and their motivations are lacking, there is enough action and world building to satisfy a Star Wars fan. Not a perfect entry into the series but certainly not its worst either.

Amazing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I didn't have high hopes when I first saw trailers for this. The more I watched them and heard peoples rave reviews I thought I should give it a try since I am a die hard Star Wars fan. I have to say I thought it was better than The Force Awakens. It was an origin story that was put together extremely well. MUST WATCH

A great stand alone Star Wars movie.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It was cool to see the rebel alliance steal the death star plans like we always heard about in A New Hope. This one is a little darker then the other Star Wars movies but it needs to be considering what they wanted to accomplish with this movie. It's a fun heist movie and definitely worth checking out.
