Roku 2 rocks... Unbelievably fast compared to streaming TV or DVD systems (even when they are hard wired).

Very easy to set up, great phone app you can use as well. Not a big gamer, so this was all I needed.

    Short Life span

Other than not being able to gain access to the free version of Hulu, I was fairly happy with the unit. There is some decent free content available and there are a lot of free trail periods for the pay sites. Regrettably the units are cheaply made and have a very short lifespan. The first one I chalked up to a fluke, but when the second unit died after 18 months I realized it's a product designed with a very short shelf life with even minimal usage.

HDMI Digital Audio Does Not Work

    Posted .

Like many other software devices that use HDMI the digital audio does not work. When connected to my 7.1 receiver only the two front speakers would work. I stream from my PC, which is connected to the same receiver, the center speaker works. Do not buy this if you want HDMI digital audio. I also had a Netflix account and it took me four tries to enter the user id and password.

Avoid if you use a receiver; terrible tech support

Unit shows a purple/pink screen whenever viewing Amazon Prime, HBO Go, VUDU and a few other video providers. Upon contacting Roku, they recommended *not* hooking the Roku up to a receiver and that would fix the issue. Well, it does.. but every other device I own works flawlessly through my receiver. The idea that I shouldn't use my receiver to take advantage of 5.1 surround and other features that Roku promotes is just crazy. Other reviewers here report the same "Hook directly up to your TV" garbage responses from Roku support. I'm not the only one with the purple screen issue. Do a search for "Roku Purple Screen" in your favorite search engine and you'll see tons of reports from users with all different types of Roku devices with this issue. If you want to use a receiver while streaming video, find another device.

It was super easy to set up, I did have to chat with support regarding hooking up my surround sound. The support chat was fast and courteous. I love that the remote is so light and uncluttered, just the basics.

I love this product, I had one when it first came out like 8 or 10 years ago and it lasted until now, I loved it so much that when the old one stopped working I went out and bought the same exact model.

Overall, great product! Must have high speed internet and of course some channels are NOT free (Netflix, Amazon...) but even the free channels are worth buying this product. Free movies and TV! Even can watch my digital versions of my already purchased movies on Vudu.

    Slow Response and Pixelated Stream

I have a first GEN Chromecast and have been plenty happy with it. I bought the Roku 2 because I need streaming functionality on another TV and wanted to take advantage of the streaming content I get with my Amazon Prime Account. I also am old school and wanted a remote in my hand again. (Chromecast uses a device such as cellphone, tablet etc.) Some negatives: - The biggest problem I had with this was the quality of the stream. I basically unplugged my Chromecast and plugged this in. I set it up and went directly to the last Netflix special I was watching on my Chromecast. Same day, same WIFI, same TV, same show, same IPAD to control it, same everything but streaming device. I first noticed a lag in the time it takes for menus, previews and my show selection to load. Had I not owned a Chromecast before this, which is faster, I may not have even realized it. Also, the Roku 2 provided a NOTICEABLY more pixelated stream on my TV. It was quite ridiculous actually. I was expecting it to AT LEAST be on par with my Chromecast. At twice the price as a new Chromecast ($35 vs. $70) I would have been in my rights to expect an even BETTER quality stream/picture. It was worse. I surfed all settings menus to see if there was a choke or throttle on the streaming to the device but all options were at optimum settings. This alone was enough to make me return it to Best Buy. - Takes quite a while to setup. Box has to download/install apps for your chosen channels. Not a big deal really. My personal opinion is all the free APPs (Netflix, HULU etc) should be preloaded. - REQUIRES you to enter a credit card. All I wanted the box for was to stream accounts I already have; Netflix / Amazon etc. There should be a opt-out, skip or an option to enter credit card info at a later date if you decide you want to purchase additional channels. Chromecast does not require this.

I rent a beach house once a year and stay in hotels several times out of the year. This allows me to stay connected to programs without bringing my laptop or tablet with me.

    Its good for 1 month

Roku was good for about 1 month. Then the message "Loading... Please, wait" was more often on the screen than any streaming show itself. But when I switched to my PC - everything was fine. And its common problem. Try to google "ROKU Loading Please wait" and you'll find tons of references to the same problem. But the most ridiculous thing that refund is possible only during 15 days. Now I am stock with store credit which I no intensions to use.

Bought this to almost solely because Roku supports PlayStation Vue. Not as laggy as the stick but it still has its quirks but for the price it's a great product.

This little box is awesome. I can subscribe to most of my favorite cable channels for less than half the price by using the available online streaming services like Sling TV and PlayStation Vue.
