If you want the most options when it comes to streaming platforms Roku should be your choice. It is the most innovative and comes with 4K support. Private listening mode complements the many features of this player.

    Had high hopes

I have had a Roku TV in the bedroom for some time and have loved it, so I decided to get the Roku Ultra for the living room TV because I was tired of buggy blu-ray player apps. I don't have a 4k TV but I wanted the best hoping for an awesome experience. Instead, what I have been plagued with are lock-ups, streaming videos with audio but no picture, channels refusing to start and some trying to start but then the unit resets itself. Boot-up also seems quite slow considering the processor this is supposed to have. I have written to Roku and hope to get issues resolved.

Bad audio and poor tech support

I bought the Roku ultra a few weeks ago and wish I had never bought it. I have it connected to a high end av surround receiver and it is continually making a loud chirping sound or sometimes a cracking or popping sound that alternates to various speakers. I have tried every different setting combination available on the devices and still have the noise. I called Roku support 2 times and after at least an hour on the phone each time, they took my information and said they would call me back, it has been over 2 weeks and I have not heard back from them. I can hook my Apple TV to the same wire and play with no issues. I only bought the Roku because the Apple TV does not do Amazon video, I am about to the point of cancelling the Amazon and throwing the Roku in the trash. I am concerned that this device will damage my speakers with the popping and cracking. I bought a high end high speed HDMI cable, which made no difference and even tried hooking the HDMI directly to the tv and an optical cable to the receiver and it still had the same issue.

    4K? Glitch fest

I was excited to try 4K streaming, but the Roku Ultra has managed to disappoint in every possible way. The trouble began as a series of intermittent HDCP errors (purple screens), with no help to be had from Roku support. I bought a series of expensive cables from every vendor I could find, but nothing would fix the issues. For the time, I went back to standard 1080P format -- and finally a series of software updates was made to the Roku to supposedly "fix" the issue. It seemed to be working for a bit. I began streaming my first show with Netflix in 4k format, and then some strange audio interruptions would happen randomly during viewing. Shortly after this, the signal would de-sync, and then both the audio and visuals would drop out for a few seconds. Sometimes when watching Netflix in 4K the red colors would become saturated and flash for one or two frames before returning to normal. I thought maybe Netflix was to blame, so I tried Prime, Youtube, and the built in News feed -- all with the same results. In combination with this, I again tried every HDMI cable I could get my hands on, but no luck. I began to suspect it was the television (Samsung 4K 60" KS8000 Quantum series), so I hooked my PS4 Pro up and was able to run Netflix, Prime, and games at 4K without a single interruption -- even on the lowest rated HDMI cable I had. I have put up with this issue for months now, browsing every forum I could find on Google searching for a solution, and reading similar stories from other users. Here we are 6 months later, and nothing has been resolved. I've been cautioning everyone I know away from these devices -- stick to the built in software or apps available on 4k Bluray players or the PS4 pro -- at least until Roku irons out all of the bugs.

    Rough Roku

I have used Roku since version 2. This is by far the worst build. Our first unit locked up repeatedly. It finally just died. Multiple calls to Roku support ended in frustration. The second unit has developed intermittent pops that you will find in other reviews. Then the sound began to fade in and out as well. In all a poor quality build. If you look through the reviews you will find these examples in other reviews. At the end the gain of 4K is trumped by the repeated sound problems. Roku support is a script based and never seems to change. Very disappointed, soon to be former Roku customer.

Player OK, Best Buy return policy very poor

Just about 3 Month into my purchase the picture started flickering, the picture coming in and out and the player starts to get somewhat hot to the touch. Of course I changed the HDMI cable, actually I tried 3 different once from different brands to see if the picture will stay on, but no luck. Since the player gets warm after about 5 Min. of usage, I won't use it anymore for obvious reasons. As I said I purchased this item in November and Best Buy tells me I can't return the player anymore, so much for backing up what you sell, not even 3 Months, so no warranty at all????? Good Buy, Best Buy, this is it for me.

My Ultra's audio constantly cuts out. No matter through either the HDMI or fiber optic connector. VERY aggravating! Picture is great! Too bad. p.s. Yes I tried all the Dolby settings. I've been doing this a long time, the problem is the Ultra.

USB Port does not currently work!

I bought a Roku Ultra yesterday and discovered the USB port was not working. I called Roku and they confirmed that currently the USB port on all Roku Ultra players is not working. This means Roku shipped this product untested. They are working on a solution but were unsure as to when the fix (hopefully a new firmware download) will be available. IF YOU NEED THE USB PORT DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

    Can't power off

Never had a device where you couldn't turn it off. You can't turn it off on the remote or the Roku box. It doesn't always turn off after turning the TV off. It was still on after 2 hours.

    Utterly broken

3 months after release, the Roku Ultra still seems like a beta product. Multiple software updates are pushed per week, yet they seem to introduce just unwanted features while not fixing any major bugs. We mainly bought the Roku for Amazon Video, but the audio is literally seconds out of sync with the video. This is not a configuration problem, as other "channels" like Netflix and Google Play seem OK. We emailed support, posted on their forum and got no response at all from a Roku employee. Their chat is a useless grab bag of "did you try rebooting?". I did finally get one response to another online review I posted, so I guess if you want some attention from Roku, you need to leave a 1 star.

Major audio bug affecting all Roku devices

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As of 02/01/2017 - Warning! Roku currently has a MAJOR software bug affecting most devices. DO NOT PURCHASE. My Roku Ultra is currently completely unusable. There is a bug in EVERY SINGLE VIDEO APPLICATION which causes major audio delays. Plex, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix etc all have issues randomly where the audio for the movie or show you are watching will be terribly out of sync with the video. So if you like 2 second delays on the sound in your movies or tv shows go ahead and purchase. There are multiple threads with over 20 pages detailing these problems in the Roku forums. Roku has been stringing us along for over two months now. But all we are told is "its being looked at". DO NOT BUY ROKU UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. CURRENTLY NO FIX IS SCHEDULED.

Roku Ultra/Premier+ doesnot work well with Sling

I bought Roku Premier+ first, then changed with Roku Ultra. But new Roku devices doesnot work well with SlingTV. Sling TV app Zoom functionality is not working with new Roku devices. I called Roku customer care first, they said its Sling TV problem. Then I called SlingTV customer care. And they gave me a complaint number, but no action taken. After a week i called back, they said Sling Technical team is aware of this issue and working on it, but there is no ETA when this problem will be solved. I am returning my Roku device today evening. So If you have a 55" or bigger TV and use Sling, then I will definitely recommend not to buy new Roku devices.
