Best overall soundbar (with a catch)

Prior to buying this soundbar, I had my Samsung KS8000 4K HDR TV and an old Samsung Home Theater system (which I already sold) in my living room. FYI Living room is medium-sized as this important for the review of this soundbar. Visited my local BestBuy to check this soundbar (I wanted to stick with Samsung; trusted and enjoyed the quality of the products) - looks, quality, audio, price. They all checked the boxes for me. Saw that it had Dolby Atmos and some of the newest technologies out in the market. HW-K950 was also on my radar but $1000+ dollars for 2 additional rear speakers was a bit too much for me. I trusted that Dolby Atmos would do the job. Bought the HW-K850. Setup is a little funky. My impression was ok, TV and soundbar have HDMI ports...simpleplug and play right because who reads manuals these days. Did that, turned my TV on and then turned the sound bar, and the display on the soundbar boots up and shows Wi-Fi. Since both are Samsung, the soundbar connected via Wi-Fi which I did not expect. Confused but content at the moment. Changed the audio source on the TV to the soundbar. Audio is very crisp, clear but bass was lacking a bit. Turned up the bass and treble levels on the soundbar; helped but not much. Slightly disappointed at this moment until I went to the audio settings on the TV. There is whereI adjusted the sound output levels, giving the levels a sort of bell-shape curve to it and the subwoofer to max. Tested the sound out with regular TV programming. That dramatically changed the sound in a very good way. But DolbyAtmos was I wanted to test out. Brought up Netflix and put on an action movie (don’t remember which one). Here is where the catch is: my first impression was that DolbyAtmos should automatically turn on when something is streaming. But that wasn’t the case. Sound wasn’t super great like it was when I adjusted the sound output levels. Did some research on Netflix with DolbyAtmos and noticed DolbyAtmos is not supprorted by Netflix on Samsung TV’s. Huge bummer for me. I switched the effect on the soundbar to Surround and the movie sounded muffled. Chose a different movie and the sound completely (in a very good way), with scenes involving shooting and explosions literally shaking the windows to my living room and floor rattled (which says a lot about the sound quality). This soundbar really impressed me. It is my understanding that certain movies on Netflix (maybe other streaming services too) show the amount of channels supported by the movie, and theremore will make a big difference when using this soundbar. As for the DolbyAtmos feature, I was told by a different BestBuy rep at a different store that a A/V receiver was not needed (which I was very close to buying in irder to take advantage of the soundbar’s DolbyAtsmo and extra features) and instead a 4K UHD player was highly recommended to take advantage of the feature. Bought one recently with a 4K UHD movie to go along with it, set it up with my soundbar and TV using 4K HDMI cables and what do you know, DolbyAtmos appeared on the soundbar display after turning it on and playing the movie and the player. The sound was incredibly better: very clear, crisp sound. You can every detail no problem, and DolbyAtmos worked fantastic. Sound coming from all dirrections, really felt like you are in the movie. Overally conclusion: very great soundbar if you are ok with sacrificing the 2 rear speakers from the HW-K950 model to save a couple hundred dollars. As long as you have the proper equipment to take full advantage of DolbyAtmos (4K HDR TV and 4K UHD player), this soundbar will not disappoint.

We purchased this sound bar to go with our Samsung curved TV. My motivation for going with a Samsung bar was the idea of the TV and bar working seamlessly. The best buy rep showed me the bar and it sounded great as everything usually does in the store. The upward firing speakers boasting the power of Dolby atmos is what ultimately drove me to take this system home. Set up was easy and the sub and bar paired flawlessly. The sound was an obvious upgrade to the stock speakers of our TV and the subwoofer put out more than enough bass but left something to be desired. It was so hard to justify the $1000 price tag of this system. Not having any dolby atmos movies and the fact that neither Netflix or Amazon had any atmos supported movies (at least that I could find), I ordered a Blu-ray movie with atmos and put it to the test. While the quality did increase slightly, it still was not as impressive as in the store, and therefore left the price tag still unjustified. I ultimately returned the unit today and purchased the sonos play bar. The fact that we don't watch much, if any DVDs and the lack of directv, Netflix, and Amazon atmos content was a big deciding factor. While the sonos play bar and sub woofer are sold separately it actually worked better as we live in a town home and try to be as considerate as possible and the bar alone puts out enough bass. We are very happy with the sonos and plan to keep it. Some things I liked about the Samsung sound bar: Remote (sleek, volume AND subwoofer volume buttons), Easy pairing, set up. Decent sound Dislikes: Bluetooth connection to phone was sketchy. Music cut out. Sometimes bar would not turn on automatically when we turned TV on. Overall I would not recommend this to a friend. Spend the extra money on a Sonos system.

Samsung R1 and Samsung Hw-k850 in perfect harmony

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I gave a review of the R1 a while back but after experimenting with the sound I noticed that the R1's will work as surround sound but you have to give up the "atmos" effect on movies. Change your DVD player to "Bit recording to Dolby Digital", my preference. Then play your 4k and you will hear your right and left R1 (R3 or R5) act as surround sound. The dolby atmos effect is almost not even missed, the room is filled with so much bass as normal from the sound bar set up. I have my sound bar tuned with the samsung multilink app which is required to make your R1 a surround set up under the sound bar icon in the app. I then tuned my speakers in the app first by then turning the sound bar volume to -6 and then the R1's both to +6. This helps compensate for the R1 still being lower volume. Then using the sound bar remote I tuned the sound bar by changing the sound volume to FR-0, FTL-+3,C-+3,FL-0,FTL-+3. Changing the right and left to 0 will help compensate for adding the R1 as surround sound outputs. The upward firing rear speakers that make "dolby atmos" are no longer a loss with actual rear surround on these radiant speakers. Trial and error with this soundbar but I wouldn't trade it for for anything else at this point because it's as good as Bose or Sanus with the Atmos functionality whether you need it or not. Happy listening!

Good Bar... but if you want then 3 channels dont..

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So where to begin. The bar itself plugged up to a TV through the ARC port sounds awesome and works flawlessly. Sound quality is great just by the bar itself. All good no issues there. Me being a home audio enthusiast I always want more. I went out and bought me some Radiant R3 wireless 360 speakers to pare with the bar. It works fantastic sounds awesome with a 5 channel surround. The problem with this is that the way Samsung wants you to pare the bar with the speakers and to the TV might i add is through WI-FI. The problem with WI-FI is that there is not always a solid connection. You can imagine what may happen when something looses connection it disconnects. You loose all sound out of all the receivers and nothing works. I find the Bar itself loosing connection more often then the Radiant speakers. Another problem with this is the Atmos that all of you are buying this for does not work over a WI-Fi Connection only through ARC.... I just really wish i could hard wire all of it together to remove this pain in the butt. Hard wiring just removes soooo much problems and inconsistencies. Now i am well over 1000 dollars into Samsung speakers that sound fantastic when its working but only works 75% of the time. Bottom line I would recommend this to someone who is just looking for a good sounding soundbar. Someone who is diving into Dolby Atmos will probably want a surround sound speakers as well so idk. Depends on the person. Sorry if this was a little confusing but home audio is confusing.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The good: Great sound when it is working. The bad: Don't do anything crazy like change channels or watch a blu-ray movie because you will lose the sound. I feel like I have to watch TV with my fingers crossed hoping this sound bar will continue to work properly. Watched the MNF game last night on my new TV with no sound because this soundbar for whatever reason did not work. I have to wait until we are not recording shows on DVR and power off every device in my home theater to get it working again. Even after that, it may work okay for 2 days or 2 minutes. I got this Samsung Soundbar hoping it would be compatible with my Samsung TVs but it is not. Not compatible with my Samsung 4K blu-ray player either. I am setup and configured properly - Best Buy Geek Squad did the install. Sad to spend all this money on a new TV, Soundbar, and Blu-Ray player and spend most of my time upstairs watching TV on my old TV because of this soundbar. Wish I did not buy it - do not make the same mistake I did.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The unit has a good sound on the warm side. Atmos speakers are a joke. Those little speakers trying to bounce sound off the ceiling does not cut it. You can convince yourself that you think you hear a more open sound above you on certain scenes but it is hardly noticeable if noticeable at all. And there is an overall lack of power. Again, good sound but not loud at all compared to other sound bars I own. I give this a 3 star. To expensive for what you get. I returned it.

Great Soundbar to use as center channel speaker!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I added this Samsung - 3.1.2-Channel Soundbar to my 5.1 home theater system as the center channel speaker and it sounds spectacular! This is how to connect it: 1. Use high quality HDMI cable and connect from 4k Bluray player output to any HDMI input on 4k Television. 2. Connect high quality HDMI cable from "ARC" HDMI port on TV to "ARC" port on Soundbar. 3. Connect high quality optical cable from output of 4k Bluray player to optical input on home theater receiver. 4. Insert Dolby Atmos encoded Bluray disc into Bluray player. If all connections were made correctly, when the movie starts to play, "Dolby Atmos" will briefly display on the front of the Samsung Soundbar. You effectively have a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound system. I have a 10 foot high flat ceiling in my home theater that is perfect for the "bounce effect" of the upward facing speakers in the soundbar used for Atmos. If you have a vaulted ceiling in your viewing/ listening area you may not get the same astonishing sound results, but I'm guessing that it would still sound very good. I highly recommend the Samsung - 3.1.2-Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Dolby Atmos® technology for anyone that wants to use it as a stand alone sound system or as an add on center channel speaker for your pre-existing home theater surround sound system!

Excellent Sound Bar Paired with Samsung Smart TV

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I originally was going to go with the Definitive Technology W Studio Sound Bar, but I found a great open box deal at Best Buy for the Samsung Atmos Sound Bar AND I hear a great deal of positive (and negative) about the Samsung Dolby Atmos line of Sound Bars. The take away I got from the reviews was that the Sound Bar sounded great, but that many consumers weren’t impressed with Atmos. (Note: I currently don’t have any Atmos content to evaluate). I purchased this sound bar not knowing that it would be an excellent fit with the Samsung Smart TVs. I have the Samsung 70" Smart TV Model #UN70KU6300FXZA. I was pleasantly surprised and love the setup since there is only one power wire connected to the sound bar. That's it! No additional wires! Again this can only be done if you have a Samsung Smart TV. I originally had the traditional setup of hooking up the HDMI sources to the sound bar, then the sound bar HDMI to the TV. Then I discovered you can connect this sound bar wirelessly to a Samsung Smart TV. Love it. Dream setup. Using the Samsung Multi-room app (you have to download in order for this setup to work) you can play the Samsung Smart TV WIRELESSLY through the Sound Bar. I've seen complaints that the max volume isn't so loud for this 350 Watt system, but the wireless hookup directly to the Samsung Smart TV provides more than enough volume for the room. The audio is actually noticeably louder at the same volume level as the HDMI hookups. Also you can play all your music directly using the Samsung Multiroom app or you can even use the Samsung Smartview App. If you have a Samsung Smart TV, this is definitely the best setup with minimal wires since you can wireless connect the sound bar to the TV.

good sound, not so great BT ability

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was convinced by a best buy sales guy that this was the best of the best of the best soundbar. It was a pain in the rear end to hook up since the instruction book is hard to follow. I called Samsung (they were beyond useless of course), Sharp (tv brand) and finally best buy before I got it working. I used to have a sonos but had to part with it and the Sonos app was the best part of that whole system. I was told this soundbar had an app but when I went to set it all up, im suppose to press a button on the sound bar that I don't have. So when I want to stream music from my iPhone to the bar, I have to use the BT. Let me tell you how much this sucks. It will work but then the moment you start using your phone to do anything, the sound stutters, stops, skips, burps, etc etc etc. I hate it. I had people over and I was using BT to steam music and then started showing pictures on my phone and the music just went haywire. I refused on my life to call Samsung again, and I cannot figure out how to get the multi room app to work so I guess im just outta luck. The sound quality on the TV is decent, but not amazing. I am wondering if I want to return it and spring for a sonos. way more expensive but way better user interface. I don't think i'd tell anyone to buy this

    Nice sound, no surrround

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I really want to like this sound bar. It has great sound, is nice and loud, and is easy to use. My main complaint is that there is no surround capability with rear speakers! Cheaper bars allow you to purchase rear wireless speakers but they are not compatible with this soundbar. This is a nice, pricier unit and it seems crazy to me that rear speakers are available on nearly every other model but this one. Understandably there are some decoding issues for true surround but all that is lost on me anyways. With NOTHING coming from the rear, the sound clearly feels less full and like something is missing. The ATMOS is a nice feature, but again just sounds lacking without rear speakers. The next Samsung model up is an additional 300-400 dollars which is just a bit much if youre just looking to add on rear sound. I think there are better options in this price range to get everything you want. Im not sure who is out there looking to spend $800 (this unit was $1000!) And WANTS ATMOS, but is ok with no surround. I wish i knew this originally and regret the purchase.

      TimB,

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-K850 Soundbar with Dolby Atmos Technology. I am sorry to hear that you did not experience the full potential of this system.

Here are a few tips that may help to improve the surround sound effect:
      1) Connect the Soundbar to a network and upgrade the Soundbar to the latest firmware version.
      2) Check that Surround Mode is set to ON.
      3) Different effect modes (Standard > Music > Clear voice > Sports > Movie > Night mode) affect the levels of the surround speakers. Try a different effect to compensate for the source and room acoustics.
      4) Try toggling the DRC feature. Dynamic Range Control is a feature that affects the volume levels on Dolby Digital sources.
      5) Depending on the mode, the level of each speaker (including the Surround speakers) can be controlled individually.

    Superb sound

I'll be honest... I was skeptical about the quality of sound that a sound bar would provide. I was a true blue surround receiver kind of guy with all the speakers that come along with it. I finally got tired of all the wire and cables and decided to give the Sound Bar a shot. I must say, the sound quality is even better than I thought. I purchased it mainly for movie watching but find myself listening to music more often. For true surround sound I opted to purchase (2) Samsung Radiant 360 R1 speakers. Best decision I made. This system is a homerun for Samsung.
