    Great Soundbar for the Price!

The soundbar sounds AMAZING when listening to Dolby Atmos! Blew away my expectations. I had to make sure my 4K Bluray player was in bitstream and not PCM for it to do Atmos. I tried non dolby blurays as well. After putting the player in Bitstream (encode to Dolby), the movies STILL sounded great! The only thing I noticed was that when watching Dolby Atmos the volume only needs to be around 30. However when watching DTS or anything from the TV (Netflix, Youtube, Plex, DirecTV Now) the volume has to be around 70 to get a similar effect. Overall, I am really satisfied with my purchase.

    Crippling Design Flaw

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

While this is a fine sound bar on paper, it has a crippling feature. That is that it can not decode Dolby Atmos signals from its TV OUTPUT/ARC HDMI port. What does this mean? This means that if you use your TV to play apps like VUDU for UHD material, you will never receive Dolby Atmos audio. It also means, if you have a Dolby Vision display and UHD player, the only way to receive Dolby Atmos with this sound bar would be to run HDMI OUT from the player to your TV, and hopefully it has a second HDMI OUT for audio only you can run to the soundbar. Until this is corrected, if you ever plan on playing back Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos or going without a dedicated component and also receiving Dolby Atmos, DO NOT BUY

Do NOT Fall for Store Demo!!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

So, I just got a new 65" Samsung 8 Series TV and wanted to have a matching Samsung soundbar to go with it. I’m an audiophile so I NEVER compromise when it comes to audio. After walking around the store, listening to the various Samsung soundbars, I came across this one. I clicked on the touchscreen to launch the sound demo and “WOW!” I was amazed at the sound quality and earth shattering bass and actually listened to the demo multiple times just because I was so impressed. I thought to myself, “I gotta have this!” Told one of the reps “I’ll take it!” and took it home. I was so excited unboxing this baby and hooking it up. Setup was easy; just 1 plug for power and 1 optical cable from TV to soundbar, then 1 plug for power to the subwoofer. Turned on my TV and this is where everything went downhill. I was greeted with sub-par sound and thought to myself, “This can’t be?! There’s gotta be something I’m doing wrong!”. I immediately started tweaking all the sound settings and tried my best to get this thing to sound as it did in the store. Although the background sound during movies was good, I could not hear speech and voices. What was even sadder was that the MAX volume was nowhere near where a soundbar at this price should be. The sound coming out of my TV speakers was louder than this soundbar. I started looking up support online to see if there was some “secret setting” that I may have missed because I couldn’t believe that a soundbar with so many good reviews could sound this bad, but after about 2 hours of fiddling with the thing, I gave up all hope on it. I cannot understand how this soundbar can have so many good reviews. After further research, as to what soundbar people suggest, I returned this one and went with the Sonos Playbar ($649.99) along with the Sonos SUB ($649.99) which did mean, yup that’s right, a whopping $1299.98! I was a bit disappointed at first since I really really wanted my equipment to be matching brands, but hey you win some, lose some. Once I got home and setup my Sonos system, I was blown away with the sound quality and deep deep bass. I felt like I was at the movies with the Sonos system. Don’t fall into the trap of buying this Samsung soundbar because, yes, it does sound good in the store, but it will NOT be the same at home. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the trouble and get a Sonos Playbar. Totally worth it!

A common misunderstanding that results in low volume/poor sound is that customers are not placing the soundbar with the SAMSUNG logo facing up towards the ceiling. If you position the soundbar with the logo facing up, you will see the display/status panel and the speakers will be facing outward. (Refer to product photos on BestBuy.com and zoom in on the photos) If you have incorrectly placed the soundbar with the status display side down and the SAMSUNG logo perpendicular to the floor, you will experience muffled or low quality sound because the unit will be resting on the speakers. Tried plugging my Apple 4k tv to HDMI 2 on my soundbar and it just won't work, sound and picture come in and out, Apple tv won't show on the soundbar if its playing in Dolby Atmos..Bought a ultra high speed cable and still nothing, not sure if i have a HDMI port that does not work..Have my xbox one hooked into input 1 and its good.. Been in contact with samsung support and been trying to get my DRC to come on on nothing, again maybe my soundbar is faulty but totally frustrated that these 2 things do not work..Sounds good when playing buy might be much for me to get the right sound, tried the multilink app and thats not helpful..Not sure i will be keeping..

Reviewing on price alone -- no speaker is worth an extra $450. Do yourself a favor, and buy the Vizio SB3621N-E8M instead. It's $149, and sounds fantastic. Much larger than it is in size. Fills the room. Very happy with that purchase, and I'd make it again over this one.

Don't buy because of Dolby Atmos

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My local Best Buy showroom demonstrates this soundbar using Dolby Atmos and it sounds great and makes you want to buy it. Problem is the ONLY way to listen to any Atmos at home is using an Ultra 4K DVD player that supports Atmos. There are currently very few Ultra 4K dvd's available and fewer that use Atmos. I ASSuMEd I could watch Ultra 4K Atmos movies on Netflicks, VUDU or HULU and enjoy the Atmos sound but sadly found out NO 4K TV will play Atmos through the ARC HDMI cable used to connect this soundbar to the TV. BTW- I'm using a 2017 LG OLED TV This soundbar has pretty good sound watching regular TV and movies, but I wouldn't have spent more money for the Dolby Atmos that I rarely ever experience. I would recommend looking for the best quality non Atmos soundbar for the price.

    Not Sure About This One

I saw and heard this soundbar in the BB and it sounded amazing. With my wife's permission I pulled the trigger for my Christmas present. Unfortunately, after hookup with the Samsung 4K 9 series, the sound performance was not there. It definitely sounds better than the TV speakers but not like I heard at the BB store. I have had GS come out twice and was advised this was the way it was supposed to sound and if ttue, I paid $500 to much. I have yet to see the Dolby light come on or hear the ATMOS. My connection is from Direct TV HDMI to the Samsung One Connect. The soundbar is then connected by HDMI to One Connect HDMI via ARC setting. Disappointing sound but if I have it connected wrong, someone please advise.

Sound quality only good in Atmos

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

There are numerous things wrong with this sytem. Most people that are going to spend $1k on a soundbar are also likely buying a high end 4k tv which will likely have HDR and run at 60hz. The only way for this system to pass Atmos or any good Dolby surround is to connect a device to one of it's HDMI connections and then use it's ARC out port to the TV. The ARC out port only supports 4K @ 30hz. This forces you to have to make a decision on whether you want faster refresh rate or full surround sound. With the Samsung bar, you can not have both. I am yet to find a splitter than can properly split the signal to maintain the lossless audio needed for atmos and keep 4k @ 60hz for the TV. If you do decided to sacrifice refresh rate for audio fidelity, be prepared for another round of issues. This bar is so picky about when it will accept an HD audio stream. It would rather upmix a stereo signal than actually use any of the audio formats Samsung claims it can. Save your money and look elsewhere. This system only sounds amazing in Best Buy. Unless you go with exact setup as the store, this bar will be nothing but a headache and you will never get that high quality sound that this soundbar is capable of giving. Also, Samsung support is the worst I've ever seen. They even make Verizon customer service seem great. Ask Samsung support a question they can't answer and they will just put you on hold until you decide to hang up. Between the connection issues of this bar and the very poor support from Samsung representatives, I have completely lost faith in this company. I used to always shop Samsung before I even considered other brands and I can't see myself giving this company another penny.

    Could be better

This is the first time buying a Samsung and my experience with this sound bar was terrible. It really depends on the over all view. I've always been a fan of other brands, the way I got to this sound bar was at Best Buy where I fell in love with the demo they had. I automatically wanted and knew it was the best of everything. During my purchase I did see some bad reviews of this but I ignored it and wanted to give it a shot. Come home and installed I automatically realize it was not the same as what I heard at the store. I made my setup but nothing compared to what I wanted. Comes to a conclusion that you need to have everything Samsung or everything 4K. And in order for atmos to work it has to be a 4K movie or video. I didn't like the idea of that and return the product and during the process I really wanted to give it a shot but I was not satisfied of how poor the volume is in order to hear the sound bar loud and it stops at 50 volume when it's just getting louder.

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung K850 Soundbar. I am sorry to hear that you are not completely happy with sound quality.

With 4K Pass-Through, Dolby Atmos®, and 11 built-in speakers including 2 upward-firing drivers and wireless sub, the K850 delivers crystal clear sound that feels like it comes from all around, including above, like in the theater.

Sound output will depend on the quality of your source material. In addition, a common misunderstanding is that customers are not placing the soundbar with the SAMSUNG logo facing up towards the ceiling. If you position the soundbar with the logo facing up, you will see the display/status panel and the speakers will be facing outward. This soundbar powers itself off several times a day with no input from any remote. Then I have to hunt around to find the sound bar remote because it's the only remote that will power it back up. Next, there are many shows and movies where the sound bar does not put out enough sound to adequately hear the programming even at max volume. This thing should blast, but it just doesn't seem to have enough Headroom to amplify the sound to the volume I need. The wireless Bluetooth input mode does not have a good quality sound. When adjusting the volume, it takes a long time to turn up or down any significant amount. You have to hold the volume button up or down as much as 30 seconds to get it to adjust from minimum to maximum volume. It just takes way too long to adjust the sound . Come on Samsung, don't you use your own products? This thing is just not user friendly- or convenient to operate. Also, you have to use the HDMI for decent sound quality. The sound is good but not great. This is not an $800 sound system and I do not recommend it.

      Mustang,

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-K850 Soundbar with Dolby Atmos Technology.
I am sorry to hear that you were not completely satisfied with the user experience.
Your feedback is very important to us and will be shared with our product team.

Here are a few things you can try to improve the rear speaker performance:
      1) Connect the Soundbar to a network and upgrade the Soundbar to the latest firmware version.
      2) Check that Surround Mode is set to ON.
      3) Different effect modes (Standard > Music > Clear voice > Sports > Movie > Night mode) affect the levels of the surround speakers. Try a different effect to compensate for the source and room acoustics.
      4) Try toggling the DRC feature. Dynamic Range Control is a feature that affects the volume levels on Dolby Digital sources.

Went with this sound bar to match my overpriced Samsung tv. I'm an audiophile so this was a big risk and I had little expectations of a mass-produced center channel. I was accurate! In short your better off with your internal tv speaker- period. This system had way too many issues. It sounds good from time to time but requires way too much effort. The cost for this system should be $299.00. don't waste your money- really.

We purchased this soundbar for our new Samsung tv. We watch the foodnetwork and house hunters and the Disney channel. We don't abuse it or blast it. The speakers started popping and were blown after 17 days. Which sucks because its after the return window and Samsung has really bad warranty service and instead of helping they signed me up for their marketing program (?!?!?). For the price paid for these speakers that's really sad. I do not recommend these and strongly advise to stick with Bose speakers.
