The Next Best Thing Could Have Been Better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My phone needed replacing, but I kept it going waiting for the next best thing. When the regular s6 came out, it was a disappointment to find out that it didn't have water resistance, had a too small battery that was not even user replaceable later on (this phone is glued together and requires a heat gun to carefully separate the back and front from the main body), or had the option of SD storage (but at least one can choose 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB internal). The battery also was too small to get me through a full day and the phone too fragile. I was really excited when I saw read the rumors the "Active" version would be coming out soon. This phone is everything great about the s6 but functional, durable, practical, and ALMOST exactly what I was looking for. I switched from iPhone to Android because I loved to customize my Phone. I like that I have more choices of fonts and colors, which make it easier for me to see and use my phone. The s6 even adds theming so I can personalize my phone even more. I also have a Samsung TV, and the built-in IR makes my phone a handy remote control too. The apps integrate better with each other making the phone more usable for practical purposes. I also like the built-in heart rate monitor and health app too. There are lots of reviews on what this phone does. The features I like most are the ones that set it apart including the water resistance, built-in durability, and a great camera in a phone! This along with the increase in RAM, latest software, and great screen are a winning combination! Life happens though so I want the more durable “Active” version. Although there are waterproof cases available for some phones, they can distort sound or make it difficult for people to hear you. I can use an Otterbox with this. I always would have a great camera to capture those pictures and videos in a phone that is built for practical use. Yes, I normally go for the pretty and pink things. However, a white camo in a gray Otterbox in a phone is just fine with me. The white camo is nice looking and thoughtfully designed with texture on the back and buttons to aid in a comfortable grip. Then I realized it only came in 32 GB with approximately only 25 GB available to the user. Apps can be disabled but not uninstalled. I could get around that I think. There are adapters that would let me connect to the micro USB charge port to record those longer videos. I would just have to utilize cloud storage and transferring older files no longer currently used elsewhere. However, when I looked at how the SIM card slot was designed, why could Samsung have not designed the SD slot this way too? Let the consumer decide if they want to trade speed versus storage especially on a model where other storage sizes was not even given as an option. Also, the consumer should have the option to put older software back on the phone especially when new software causes problems. Unfortunately, this phone does not allow that either. If you update and the update has issues, you are stuck with the issues until AT&T fixes them. Updates can be far and few in between. The biggest plus and minus is the battery. It is a generous 3500 mAh and should easily last me all day but still sealed. Really sealed. And it and looks like it too will require a heat gun to replace it later at some point in time only I cannot not determine if the back comes off at all on the "Active" model looking like one has to remove the display just to replace the battery! The battery may have to be replaced by carefully separating the front (or maybe the back panel) with a heat gun. Since there is no Samsung service center in the state I live in, it will require a mail-in service. To preserve the water resistance, I would not trust it to anything less than an authorized service center. I’ve had a few devices where the battery goes bad. This concerns me. If the sealed battery last two to three years, it is possible the original owner will move onto using another phone. However, more and more people do not have contract plans anymore. Instead, they are buying phones on installment plans or cash now making the expense of upgrading often more of an issue. Whereas these expenses used to be buried in the cost of the plan, it is clear to see what you are paying for the phone and plan now. Also, these older phones can be passed along to other family members or are still useful for other purposes especially with their high-end specs! They are still so much better than the pay-as-you go phones. I would recommend this phone to a friend as long as they know that this phone has a sealed battery and will require and authorized service center to replace it at a later date. Because of the glued together design, any repairs on this phone will be difficult and will need to be done by a service center including cracked screen, camera replacement, charger port replacement, etc. The phone is 5+ stars except for the sealed battery. A better design would have been to secure the back with screws--"mock" ones are already there for looks anyway. The inside of the back should have a rubber seal if needed While the battery does not have to be easy to take in and out, it should be user replaceable in the future. This battery WILL require an authorized service center because the average consumer will not have the special tools or skills for this. The lack of SD storage and non-user replaceable, sealed battery is the only reason I deducted stars. I should mention this phone does not have the Touch ID either, but that is not an issue with me, but I do not see why they could not incorporate it. The s5 has it, and it is a water resistant phone. 4 Stars Overall (limited storage doesn't make sense with the great camera and video) 1 for Repairs Yes, I would recommend to a friend as long as they understand this phone will require an authorized service center to make even simple repairs that you could normally have done locally with other phones. However, you are getting a more durable, water-resistant phone that may require less repairs.
