One year and 3 months after i bought it the screen failed. Never been dropped, always had a case on it. 3 days ago opened it and the inside screen had a line on it. Few hours later the entire left half of the screen does not work. $300 plus to have it fixed. No reason for the failure other than poor product. Will never buy one of these again and highly recommend no one else does either.

Best of Both Worlds - Phone and a Mini Tablet

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Let me start off by saying that I don't view the Z Fold 3 as a phone, but more so as a device considering its "mini tablet" mode. I had the last 2 generations and the most significant improvement was between the 1st and 2nd. If you're a Z Fold 2 user and trying to determine whether to make the switch to the 3, you won't be missing much if you choose to pass on it. I'll try my best to articulate why below. Design: One of the biggest gripes I've come across on the internet regarding the Z Fold series are the phones' heftiness. I will admit that it took me some time to get used to the heavier weight, but again, I used to it over time. The Z Fold 3 is slightly lighter than the 2, but it's nothing significant. Nevertheless, you'll adapt to it. The front screen is big enough for me to text on despite the awkward screen ratio (tall screen). Speaking of the front screen, Samsung did a great job in making it 120 Hz to match the bigger screen as it's absent on the Fold 2. Also, the camera hole on the big screen is "invisible"; it can still be seen as it'll be pixelated, but it's less noticeable when viewing content. Battery: One would think that a device that has 2 screens would have one of the best batteries; however. that is unfortunately not the case here. Now considering I work in an office environment with easy access to my charger, the battery will never die on me. But when I do leave work (6:30 am - 4 pm), I typically have around 45-50%. This is dependent on whether I have a slow day and have time on my hands to watch videos and browse the internet. Not to mention, I plug it into my car for Android Auto which then charges it. Therefore, the battery will never be a major issue for me. But if you're someone who will be away from a charger for long periods of time and heavily utilize your phone, I can't see it lasting a full day on a single charge. I gave this review 4 stars because of the battery which could be better. I think I understand why Samsung didn't insert a larger battery, but I'll touch on that in my conclusion. Camera: Unfortunately, I'm not the best candidate at all when it comes to rating the camera still shots and videos. However, I have taken a few photos just to see the quality and it's good enough for me. But it's a known fact that the S21 Ultra's camera is better and I agree. If you're a photographer who absolutely needs an awesome camera, the Z Fold 3 may more than likely disappoint you. Nevertheless, it can get the job done. Software: Samsung UI 3 is one of the best interfaces in my opinion. I admit that I do prefer Stock Android, but UI 3 is a close second. If you're an avid Android user and have had experience with the newer Samsung phones in the last few years, you won't be disappointed with the Z Fold 3. I do recommend playing around with the aspect ratio in the settings to take full advantage of viewing certain apps in full screen. The Z Fold 2 had a few hiccups with this, but Samsung rectified this on the 3. Now if you're coming from an iPhone, it may take some time to get used to it. Android is definitely more complex than iOS; I have a 12 Mini that I'll go to every now and then for its simplicity and small form factor so I understand, but I digress. The UI runs smoothly with no hiccups. Features: The S-Pen compatibility is probably the biggest difference between last year's Z Fold 2 and the 3. I'm not certain, but I think there was an update to where the Z Fold 2 became compatible with the S-Pen. Again, I'm not sure but I want to say I read it somewhere. If you're a Note user, you'll be happy with this addition. The only gripe you'll have which I share is the inability to insert the S-Pen into the Z Fold 3. I have the Samsung case which has a place where the S-Pen can be inserted. Other than that, you'll have to carry the S-Pen around which is an inconvenience in my opinion considering you can easily lose it. Speaking of the case, it's ok but it could be better. I wish the cover was magnetic, but it easily flaps open and can be bothersome at times. Call quality/durability: The aforementioned hasn't been an issue for me at all. Calls are crystal clear for me (Verizon) and the screens have held up. I do recommend discarding the front screen protector and replacing it with a tempered glass one. The inner display is supposed to be a certain percentage tougher than the Z Fold 2 and I imagine it's due to the S-Pen. The S-Pen has a spring loaded mechanism to where if you press too hard on the screen, the point will retract which is a nice touch. Conclusion: The Z Fold 3 is probably one of the most fun devices you'll have fun with. It isn't for everyone, but tech enthusiasts like myself will appreciate it for what it is. In regards to the battery, I believe the Z Fold 3 is lighter because of the smaller battery. Had it been larger, the weight would've been more prominent. Again, the weight is one of the biggest complaints from consumers. I'm not sure how Samsung can find a middle ground on this aspect, but you can't have your cake and eat it. Overall, if you can stomach the price, I believe it's worth it. Samsung's Trade-In program saved me a huge chunk of money and basically knocked the price down by half when I traded my Z Fold 2. Do I believe foldable phones are the future? If the price can come down, I think so. Having the ability to open your phone up to a larger display to watch videos/movies and read eBooks is an awesome experience that I believe anyone would enjoy. Looking forward to the future of foldable phones.

Phone is good, but battery is horrible. Im sure I’ll give it another try after they hopefully fix the battery issue, ensuring screens last, adding dust resistance, and widening screen. Camera is HORRIBLE too Never got used to the front screens keyboard. Incredibly clunky. Nice to hold and crease never bothered me. I like the phone but there was far too many issues to keep it

Connectivity to my network is worthless. Currently only really using it on Wi-Fi. I purchased the phone around Xmas time it worked great until android 12 update came out. Now I have spotty coverage. The return date of the phone was 40 days past, since it went to crap. Ended up buying a usable phone. This one sits as a overpriced tablet. SMH.

The Fold 3 is a high quality personal computing device (doesn’t feel right to simply call it a “phone”). Nothing compares to being able to unfold it into a mini tablet for review larger documents, multi-tasking apps, viewing pics/videos, and most importantly streaming video from Netflix, etc. That said I do most of my work with the Fold closed, only opening when I really need that immersive experience. And sadly while closed the main display is too narrow for my medium/large hands so I make a lot of typing errors. Another issue I have is battery life, even when I tweaked it so that was only using 70% CPU (and other such battery saving settings) I still couldn’t make it through a full day on a single charge, and that’s with not opening into tablet mode very often. I was also disappointed with the S Pen Flip Cover case - hated it so much that I quickly determined I couldn’t use it. Currently that is the only case that holds an S Pen so basically its like not having S Pen support as far as I’m concerned because I’m not going to try to carry it separately. Lastly the device is pretty dang heavy. While folded is has a brick-like quality to it. Now I understand if you want a phone that can also be a table its probably going to come with some heft so I could have lived with that if the other things hadn’t been a problem. Ultimately I believe that folding phones are the future and that I will eventually own one again. What I’m hoping is that either Google launches a Pixel Fold that has a less narrow main screen and better battery life, or that the Fold 4 comes with two options with the second option being a “Ultra” or “Pro” model that has a wider main display, better battery life, and a slot for the s pen inside the device. Oh and also better cameras! (It was kind of lame that they just brought the old camera system from the Fold 2 instead of using the better array from the S21 Ultra.) In case you’re wondering, I tried 5 different cases and my favorite was the Samsung Silicon Cover. It has a really nice feel to it and doesn’t add too much bulk.

    YOUR SCREEN WILL BREAK

Love the phone but you need to be warned...your large screen will break on its own where it folds. It depends on usage, some faster than others. But one day.. out of no where it will develop a white line down the fold and form little cracks that spread to the edges. I was using the large screen and while using it, i suddenly lost the touch and realized i had a this internal crack appear in the center out of nowhere. It is now useless when opened.

    Great Phone and Camera-Battery Disappointing

Love this phone for its functionality. It's like having a cell and tablet in one. Lots of flexibility and so much more usable than a typical phone. The camera takes stunning pictures. They are gorgeous. So many positives. The one thing that really is a drawback and a huge issue is the battery life. It probably takes a lot to run that large screen, but it's very disappointing after paying the price for this phone. If you're actively using the phone, the battery lasts just a few hours. I would expect 8-10 hours...but I'm keeping it on the charger a lot.
