They block out back noise or you can turn it on so you can hear what's goikng on around you. The only con to these is that you need to use your laptop to add music. I was able to literallky hang upside down, cause you know you have to check to see what will make them come out. And they didn't. I was afraid of losing one, but they have GPS installed so you can locate them.
