This Samsung portable drive is so compact (~2" x 3" x 3/8") and has so much storage, 1 TB, that I call it my mighty midget! It's easy to use, has a handsome black exterior, and was priced affordably. What else can I say - I love it!

Problems booting MacBook Pro 2018 and USB-C

Physical size is awesome, solid looking metal smooth case. On a 2018 MacBook Pro it tests read/writes of about 500Mb/s each when using the supplied USB-C cable, and 320&350Mb/s using the USB-C to USB-A cable. Problem with Mojave when used as a boot drive, system is incredibly slow (4-6 minutes to boot) with numerous odd errors when using all USB-C connections. When using the USB-C to USB-A cable all works great though slower as the drive's r/w is slower. Tried formatted as APFS and then reformatted as HFS+, same issue - totally unusable as a boot drive when using USB-C. Other SSD's I have don't have this issue. Would not recommend if you are looking to use this as a backup boot drive.

Easy to setup and extremely fast external hard drive. Setup took minutes, very straight forward with clear instructions. I have never had an SSD drive before, but now will only purchase these moving forward.

Cannot be backed up using Carbonite

    Posted .

People who purchase this should be aware that this external hard drive CANNOT be backed up if you use Carbonite. I purchased this three months ago and it dawned on me today that I hadn't set it up so that Carbonite was backing it up. I called and the tech told me that it has to be NTFS or FAT32 in order for Carbonite to be able to back it up. Now it's too late to return it. If you don't care about that, then it is a good external hard drive and I love that it is so small that I can take it when I travel.

Partition Compatibility Issues with Newer Mac OS

    Posted .

Bought two Samsung T5s for back-ups for my daughter's MBPs. Also have an iMac desktop. After much research on the Samsung website and after speaking with Samsung tech support, found a solution for an incompatibility with later Mac OS only relative to partitioning the SSD. My goal was to have one partition for Time Machine back ups and another partition for storing photos. Turns out, you can only partition this external SSD with older Mac OS. Made sure to update to latest SSD software 1.6.6 and latest firmware _01060602 available in early Jan 2020. Downloading and installing the latest firmware and software didn't matter. Still was not able to partition the SSD with Catalina (10.15.2) nor High Sierra (10.13.6). I was, however, able to partition the Samsung T5 SSD when attached to a MBP with an older OS, Yosemite (10.10.5). Samsung Tech Support suggested I try an older OS to partition and then see if the MBP with the new OS could read the SSD with two partitions. I could. Hopefully this is helpful and perhaps saves someone several hours research. Other than this compatibility issue, SSD seems to work well, is very compact, and fast.

This is a known issue. The hard drive is not compatible with the latest MacOS. The manufacturer has contacted me regarding this issue. Unfortunately you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to file a claim. They have a proprietary software preinstalled on the drive. It renders it unable to be formatted to Mac.

Not compatible with 2018 Mac Mini...surprising

Never had a problem with a Samsung SSD before. However, when I got this SSD and put it on my 2018 Mac Mini for time machine use, it would usually get the error "Not properly ejected" when the mac woke up. Tried a lot of things, never got it to work right. Replaced it with a SanDisk Ultra SSD, and that works fine with the mac.
