Sandisk Cruzer is not for everyone

Sandisk puts software on its' Cruzers to allow you to have software available to you on the road. The application software allowed, however, is not of your choosing and you must buy generic browsers, word processors and such. Unnecessary if you have a laptop or netbook or are using hotel computers. There may be a security advantage and if you're interested in that type of thing, you should check it out before buying. The problem is that if you don't want this capability or the windows and GUI's that keep popping up when you insert the drive, you can't get rid of them. You can delete all system software on the drive but then you get dismount/eject warnings and it re-installs certain folders when you insert the thumbdrive the next time - not enough folders though for the Cruzer system to work again without re-installing other stuff so now you have a hodge-podge mess on your drive and those incessant warnings and pop-ups to kill all the time when all you want to do is see the files on your thumbdrive. If you just want a simple flashdrive to drag files to and from, almost everything else is a better alternative because this is really annoying. Too, it's not easily clear (to me) which Sandisk products have this unwanted "take your important files along" nonsense on them and which don't. I believe the term to look out for is 'Cruzer' but I'm not certain enough of that to buy other Sandisk products and risk getting another toad. I will say the drive has worked flawlessly. It is lightweight plastic and the retractable port is nice and not too common. Just be forewarned you are getting more than you bargain for if you're just looking for a simple thumbdrive to store files on.

Use SanDisk for bootable USB Flash

Due to Microsoft Windows 8 and 10 needing USB flash drives to create bootable recovery media, and also using several utilities (BooIt Bare Metal, Clonezilla) that also use/create bootable USB drives I purchased the SanDisk brand since I have never had boot trouble with this brand drive. One would think that all known brand USB flash drives would be fairly close in performance - yes maybe one is faster than the other, but generally functionally equivalent. Unfortunately I've had constant trouble with reliable booting from PNY (Inostor) 32GB USB 3.0 Flash drives. Given that the Windows Recovery disk is now a bootable USB flash drive, one cannot afford to have intermittent boot trouble with these drives. Thus my experiment with the less expensive PNY drives as bootable Flash drives has ended - and now I use SanDisk for these type of drives. You can still use PNY for data - I've never had a problem with lost data on a PNY drive. Note that this drive is a USB 2.0 Flash drive. I would have preferred a USB 3 drive since they're faster (and time is money) but they did not have any more at this size and price point in USB 3 in the store. USB 2 drives work in USB 3 "sockets/slots/" - they're compatible, but not as fast. Notice that some companies have taken to saying that their Flash drives are USB 3 compatible - implying they're USB 3 spec'd - beware of misleading package labeling.

Solid, tons of storage, good price

I bought this last week for roughly fifty cents a gig, and even after that special it's still pretty inexpensive for what you're getting. Body: solid, with the little slide button on the top to jut the USB fitting in and out of the body. In my opinion this is better than the caps because everyone loses the caps eventually and the USB fitting just hangs out exposed getting beat up. Attachment point: it has a decent little key ring (or lanyard) attachment point which for 64gb worth of data you might want to consider. Transfer speed: quick. I'm using this primarily for backing up native images in high resolution so it's not critical that I get blazing speeds, but I also don't want to hang around watching the transfer bar go across. This drive performs fast enough for me; it seems on par with every other higher-end USB drive I've come across. Bottom line: I'm using this thumb drive as a off-computer storage when doing remote trips in far away places. There are a lot of photos taken which get cleaned off the SD card every day and loaded onto my laptop. This 64gb drives gives me a quick way to make a separate physical back up. Why not just use the cloud? Well, in a lot of "out there" locations there simply is no Internet access and even if you can find a cafe, there are better things to do in paradise than wait around for two hours as gig after gig of data transfers. That's my use, it works great, and if you have a high storage need capacity I'm sure you'll find the same results.

I purchased the Sandisk Cruzer 16gb Flash Drive last month, and so far it has been a nice product for the price. Starts up quickly, and has reasonable transfer speeds for a 2.0 model, although downloading directly to the drive seems a little slow for larger files. The SecureAccess Vault 2.0 feature is a breeze to run and set-up, and is handy for encryption of your files in case of loss, theft, etc. Design is cool enough- rounded end with a tapered edge that has plenty of room to attach a lanyard or carrying cord (not included) without having to squint and battle with the tiny holes that a lot of other flash drives include. Warm orange LED indicator isn't too dim, nor too bright or distracting, and it slowly surges in sleep mode, which is nice. Advertised capacity is 16gb; actual available space is only 14.9gb before opening the Vault feature, knocking the available space down to 14.8gb, but this is the case with nearly all brands, so I wasn't shocked- just something to keep in mind before purchasing, depending on your needs. I picked this up on sale for $7 with free shipping, and it arrived within a week. As long as you don't require lightning-fast transfers or 3.0 speeds, this is a great buy for general use.

    Not good for Xbox 360

I bought this because it was on sale, my main goal was to install the Grand Theft Auto 5 Play disc (disc 2) onto the flash drive so I could benefit from the 360 DVD drive not having to work the whole time I'm playing (Plus it's noisy). When I formatted the USB drive on the Xbox 360 it popped up a "Performance Warning” message saying this drive doesn't meet Xbox 360 performance standards and you may experience problems. I went ahead and tried it anyhow but I experienced pop-up and some textures would load in later than they should during game-play. I ended up taking it back and bought a Patriot Xporter XT Boost 16GB and it works great, it also passed the Xbox performance test. I would only recommend this Sandisk if you're taking advantage of the sale and don't need it for Xbox 360.

    Piece of trash.

This is what I get for spending peanuts on a device. This flash drive became write protected after about 2 weeks when transferring some large files to it. Prior to that I was using it frequently with no trouble. But when I tried transferring several 2-3 GB files to it, it just quit and became write protected, meaning that I couldn't put any more files onto it or delete any files from it. Basically it became a tiny "read only" brick. I tried formatting it, virus scanning it, nothing. I copied all my files off it and smashed it in the backyard. This inadvertent issue seems to be a very frequent problem with Cruzer brand flash drives and there is no solution. Avoid. Do yourself a favor and don't spend peanuts on something you intend to get some use out of. Some things in life are worth an extra nickel.

    SOLUTION for useless keychain part

    Posted
    mistersimard

I bought this device assuming that there would be some relatively easy way to attach it to a keychain. Without this, it becomes useless, as I don't want to carry it in a pocket. I tried the usual attachments, with no success. It was starting to really annoy me. I went to the hardware store to ask if they had any ideas, but they were no help. When I was walking around, I saw some black zip ties (aka cable ties) and I tried one of the very smallest ones. With a little work, I got one through. It actually provides a pretty secure solution. So if you're frustrated and about to return this because of the pathetic keychain part, try a zip tie!

    Good little thumb drive.

I bought this for transferring large media files from one PC to another. I've used it a few times for that purpose and it works fine. I wish it was faster, but when you're writing files in excess of 8gig it just takes a while. To get a lot faster you'd have to move up to USB 3.0 and those drives seem to be having some trouble. I've always found Sandisk Drives to be very reliable, even after they've received a lot of abuse. I got this one during the Cyber Monday sale, which was a terrific deal. I can't comment on the included software as I just deleted it and reformatted the drive. I'm not nearly as concerned with security as I am with capacity and I fail to see a need for losing space to unnecessary programs. This drive will never have any personal or sensitive data on it anyway. So, if you're in the market for a large capacity flash drive, I don't think this unit will disappoint you. It's simple, reliable and rugged.

I bought a TCL Roku tv from Best Buy that has a feature called "Live TV Pause" in which you need a USB 2.0 compatible 16GB or greater drive inserted into the USB port of the TV. The tv goes through a formatting of the USB drive at which time it's supposed to work. I have bought now TWO of these drives, neither of which worked. Both gave error messages. I then tried a cheaper PNY usb drive that works flawlessly. Consequently I spent an hour on chat with Sandisk support sending photos of the drive the receipt, etc, only to find out that they could do nothing for me. Expect the worst customer service from Sandisk, so save yourself the trouble and buy a different brand.

I actually own two of these 16GB flash drives. That's because I damaged the first one by knocking the plug out of alignment accidentally while it was inserted into the USB port on the computer I was using at the time. Fortunately, it still worked so I was able to transfer the files on the damaged unit over to another unit of this model. The second one, however, has developed another problem where it sometimes doesn't plug in correctly unless I press firmly on the sliding lever while inserting the flash drive. These are, fortunately, relatively minor issues because this is overall quite a good USB flash drive, and I've given it a good solid workout over the past few months while downloading files onto it from remote computers, transferring them to my home desktop and taking files to FedEx Office to print out. I just wish that the design were a little sturdier.

I share pictures, video clips, etc. with my extended family regularly. I also occasionally like to make external backups of my data. This used to involve burning CD's or DVD's. Frankly, it was a bit of a pain to do this, and as I accumulated more data, it meant using multiple DVD's to hold all of the data. Flash drives have been such a relief! You can use them for all of the same purposes as CD's or DVD's, and they are easily reusable. Yes, I know there are rewriteable discs, but these drives are so much nicer to work with. In my opinion, SanDisk is one of the better brands on the market. The 16 GB size is just right for my needs. Best Buy runs sales on them fairly regularly, and I use the opportunity to build my supply. If you trade data on a regular basis or just need external storage space, consider using these flash drives. I don't think you'll be sorry.

Simple, Basic, Inexpensive when on Sale

This 16g unit was purchased to create a recovery disk for a Windows 8.1 machine. I chose SanDisk because they tend to be very reliable, but not overly fast. Since this was going to be a "burn and forget" drive, I didn't feel the need to hunt down the best performer, rather a solid performer. The design is basic, I prefer the slide out connector to PNY's plastic sliding sleeve. I wish SanDisk would make the capacity notation more visible on these units, as I now have 3 of these that are different sizes and it's hard to read the grey-on-black text printed on the back to see which is which. While I appreciate that the unit doesn't get hot to the touch like a PNY, I do feel it is rather flimsy in comparison to earlier Cruzer designs. Overall, it's okay, but I wouldn't use this iteration of the Cruzer as a business critical carry around thumb drive. It's better for home archival purposes.

This device has allowed me to consolidate several other flash drives plus allows lots of room for backing up data in large quantities. The speed is very good. I provide IT support, so I've connected it to many computers of various types and have never had a problem with it connecting successfully. It seems solidly built and the retractable plug feature (no cap needed!) makes it even easier to work with. The plug extends far enough out of the device to reach fully into every USB port I tried it in. I cannot comment on the software that came with it as I deleted it right away. A lanyard of some sort would have been a plus, but lack of it is certainly not a deal breaker. There is a solid attachment point to connect your own thread-type lanyard if you'd like. I would definitely recommend this to others!

    Great Flash Drive

This is a good flash based storage device and has a great program called U3 that's included. U3 is a prgram that comes with the flash drive and allows you to transfer programs onto the device and open the programs on any computer without an install. You can create U3 compatible software by using package factory and you just drag and drop the program you want into package factory and creates U3 compatible software. You can do this with many applications and the resulting software works fine. You can also place games and play them directly off the flash drive. Some programs may be incompatible because of the complexity of their software. The device was given a 3 for value for price because I got this at another store for half off. Would recommed buying if you find a good deal.

I use lots of portable drives, and I was able to get about 6 of these when they went on sale for $3.99 ea. 16 GB isn't what it used to be though. For work, I do not come near using the space for easy transport of data, and at such a great price, I'm happy to give them away, or share them with colleagues. Personally, I was surprised at how easy it was to fill up several of these with movies (especially in full HD, 1080p). One movie seems to average about 2-3GBs. These drives have been jumbled around, in suitcases, and backpacks, and I've not experienced any data losses, or corruption. I gave it only 4-stars, for those who may find it at full-price, and/or because it is the older, more familiarly-sized item (as opposed to the smaller, micro versions, which I prefer). Still, I'm very happy with my purchases.

I love it. Well made and not junky like old USB drives used to be made. The actual USB part slides out and clicks into place so you don't have to hold the dang thing into place as you plug it in, and then it's easy enough to click it back into the closed position. It fits on my keychain perfectly and works very well. I got the 16GB on sale for $3.99, and I probably wouldn't purchase it at full price because I'm cheap, but honestly even for its full price it's definitely worth it. The software it makes you install takes all of a minute, and it's just so your files are protected. The full size of this flash drive, fresh out of the box was 14.4GB which is fair with the software being installed and whatnot. I can plug it into any of my computers and it just goes right to work. Overall I would recommend this product.

I bought this to store music for playback in my vehicle with a USB port. It replaced a cheap knock-off USB stick that stopped working after just a few months of use. I have had good luck with Sandisk in the past, and this USB stick won't disappoint. Very fast response time - plug it into my vehicle and the music is up and running in a couple of seconds. The only reason I took off one star (in reality, 1/2 a star) was for the retractable USB plug. Nice feature, but seems a little flimsy. Sometimes I have to keep my finger on the extend/retract slider while I insert it into the USB port to keep it from retracting. Doesn't affect performance at all. Minor nuisance. Sure is nice to have all the clutter of CD cases out of my vehicle. Get a quality flash drive like this one and skip the cheap junk. For a few bucks more, you'll be much happier.

Sandisk used to be my #1 go to for flash drives. I am a consultant, and I recommended and used these drives with all of my clients for all of our document transferring/storing purposes. Lately however the quality of these products seem to be declining. I have had multiple fail to recognize events happen personally (not just with one or two, but dozens....), and many of my clients have started to complain that they have a lot of various issues with them as well. I go through hundreds of these drives quarterly, so when this many are having problems it started to raise huge flags about their quality with me. Hopefully they will up their game and go back to the quality they used to be known for! Hope this helps......

I bought this at Bestbuy.com as extra stock and it was sitting in my drawer for 9 months. When it comes in use, I found the product was a defective (fake one?). The package was for 16GB but when I checked by explorer, there is only 195MB available!!! I formatted multiple times but nothing changed. I contacted customer service but Best Buy can offer only 15 day return/exchange policy. I somehow over expected the quality of items sold at Best Buy and I admit my assumption was wrong. I should have checked items as soon as I bought. I still keep a mouse, micro SD and 2 of tower mini fans (all bought at Best Buy) and I am getting scary to open them. I bought them because they were on sale but I guess I should buy only items I need to use right away...

I generally use “jump drives” like the SanDisk Cruser for transferring files. When an operating system upgrade notification arrives, I download the upgrade to do the install from the SanDisk to keep the internet noise and what not from messing up a good install. Best to be prepared for any eventuality. 16Gig isn’t large enough to backup my whole hard drive but it does the job of downloading the new OS in prep for the install. For regular individual file transfer from one machine to another, this thumb drive works great.
