Customers are saying

Customers consistently note the Extreme Portable 1TB External USB-C NVMe SSD's impressive portability, speed, and compact size. Many appreciate its large storage capacity and lightweight design. However, some users mention that the drive can get warm during use and that the included cable is shorter than desired. A few also find the price to be relatively high.

Seems to work fine for a time machine drive on my MAC, although its not as fast as I thought it would be. For the price of this drive they could given you more than a 3" cable, how cheap can you get? For that reason alone I'm giving it an average rating.

Good, but this external portable SSD can only be used by either Mack or PC. It cannot use both.

Hi Alfred, thanks for taking the time to post your review about the drive. Please note that the drive can be formatted using the exFAT file system so that it can be used with both macOS and Windows operating systems. Please see Answer ID 20821 (https://support-en.sandisk.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/20821). Please backup existing data from the drive as formatting is a data destructive process. Never recommending these drives. I have a 1 TB and the 4TB and they both failed together. A few months ago the drives would not load on my Mac and it turned out to be a SanDisk problem. Their solution is to use a Windows 10 or 11 computer to update the firmware, but not before making sure your files are backed up. That requires a trip to a tech support desk at Best Buy or similar, or calling a friend with said computer. Just read it for yourself on Ars Technica "SanDisk’s silence deafens as high-profile users say Extreme SSDs still broken" or any other google search for this problem will lead you to the many users who have lost files.

The SanDisk Extreme NVMe SSD has a small size and rugged construction perfect for taking it with you on the go, and fast speeds which make it great for any task you could reasonably throw at it. Backed by the long-trusted SanDisk and Western Digital brands, this unit is a worthy pick for those needing a decent external drive. [ Performance ] During my benchmarks connected to a laptop via USB 3.2 Gen 2 type C port using the included USB-C cable, I maxed out at 978.72 MB/s read speed and 940.03 MB/s write speed with sequential 1MB chunks in CrystalDiskMark, reasonably close to the advertised maximum speeds. In practical file transfer tests between this and another NVMe SSD drive connected to the same computer via M.2 (where the other drive benchmarks faster in all regards), I was getting about 700 MB/s read speeds and 465 MB/s write speeds consistently from/to the SanDisk drive. For stability testing, I recorded many hours of high-resolution, high-bandwidth gameplay videos directly to the drive which went very smoothly with no hiccups. [ Design ] The rubberized body feels very sturdy, and I suspect could endure some significant punishment while protecting the internals from harm. The IP55 rated dust and water resistance, while not amazing, provides enough protection against mishaps to confidently take the unit on the go. There’s no plug/cap for the USB port on the drive, which detracts somewhat from its otherwise rugged design. The ‘carabiner loop’ is a nice touch for some added utility. One of the most unfortunate--and arguably bizarre--design choices is the incredibly short USB-C cable included. While barely sufficient for plugging this drive into a laptop or other small device (tablet, phone, camera, etc.), plugging this drive into a PC with a tower case is almost certainly going to require a much longer cable to avoid unintentional disconnects. There’s no power or activity light, and while not necessarily unusual, it is a feature that some may miss.

    DO. NOT BUY. Impending lawsuit

I finally bought this fearing my 10-15 year old HDs were going to die on me and take precious family memories with them. I should have known when more often this would suddenly eject itself. But using it so little the thought slipped my mind. Not even 2 years in and this drive is dead. "Insert disk" error on several PCs and devices. Come to learn WD is now being sued because the failures are so common yet ignored by them. These are being heavily discount often. DO NOT fall for it, WD is offloading bad products.

Worked great when i first bought it a year ago. After six months the drive quit. The drive doesnt show on my Apple Mac or Windows 10 PC. I tried a new proven working cable hoping that was the issue, but no luck. Not sure what to do.

Please allow us to inform you that the amount of current required to power this portable SSD device is approximately 1.1 amps. This SSD should work with most higher-end mobile phones that do provide sufficient power. However, we would suggest you check the same with your host device manufacturer. Faulty drives - bad firmware, you WILL lose data

Sandisk/Western Digital is aware of firmware problems with these drives yet they keep them on the market. Do some research, you WILL lose data if you buy this drive. At best, it'll randomly disconnect and reconnect, maybe causing some file corruption. At worst, I'll cause your whole computer to crash and shut down. Others are having the same experience. Manufacturer is in denial. These products should be pulled from the shelves.
