It is plenty fast to work directly off the drive when connected to my laptop. This week I keep getting the disconnect/reconnect chime on my laptop constantly and a pop up notification that the drive may have errors. I freaked out and hooked it up to my desktop using a different cable and backed up the 1tb of data written to the drive already while updating everything I could and restarting my laptop trying to rule out if the drive, cable, or laptop was the issue. My desktop performed an error check and found zero issues. I worry now about the longevity of this drive.
