I purchased this 3 years ago and it is still going strong. It has never failed me. It is smaller than a phone, fits in my pocket or computer bad easily. I love this drive.

slow to come up then died. Sandisk refused to replace the SSD even though quit working within the first 6 months. Will not buy sandisk again. Replacing all my sandisk products for my photography business, since they do not back their own products.

I love thumb drives and I collect portable hard drives to make backups of video and photo projects... typically I'm using the MyPassport from Western Digital. Unless they are in the case, I'm constantly worried about these small, spinning-disk drives - plus, they're "slow" by today's standards where we're spoiled by solid state drives. So opening the box on the SanDisk Extreme, I fully expected to see a rubberized version of a WD MyPassport. Nope. 500 GB of solid-state storage packed into something the size of a small stack of business cards. It's rubberized, water and dust resistant, has a keychain and/or lanyard clip, and USB-C connectivity out of the box. That this is marketed to provide "quick backup of photos and videos" is absurd. It should be marketed instead to spy teams performing Mission: Impossible style work. Photo and video backup would be a waste... unless you had some super secret photos of hidden nuclear reactors that absolutely positively had to get somewhere. It's speedy, yes, the benchmarks hold up. But because of this, I can't relegate this as one of my backup drives. Instead, a smart Entrepreneur could skimp on storage space on a main laptop and use this to host the "main drive". A smart producer could do the same with the super-expensive internal scratch disk and use this instead. This is a cool turning point for folks who remember the progression of external drives and thumbdrives. That we now have super-high-speed USB-C SSD storage in this form factor and with this level of protection built-in... I can't wait to see what happens in the next 2 years. I'd love to say like... buy this to replace all your external backup drives. This drive is overkill for that application, but: if you want a high-quality, external SSD drive that will survive, and is fast enough to behave as a main drive... or if you spend your life backing things up and could use the extra oomph this drive can provide, this is where to start. As part of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network, I received this product in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Bought three of these and used them to store a years worth of converting CDs to FLAC. All three failed within two weeks. SanDisk support was utterly worthless.

I received this drive free as a Best Buy Tech Insider and had no idea how small it would be. Its about 1/3 the size of my cell phone with a slide proof grip surface! The drive is very fast and only gets slightly warm to the touch when in use. I could not get the SanDisk Secure Access software to work that came on the drive, but downloaded the current version 3.02 from the SanDisk website and it works great for drag and drop copying with password protection. I would recommend for transferring files or using as a backup drive.

It's hard to get excited by yet another external disk drive when you have lots of them, but when this review version arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the small size (it fits in the palm of my hand). While my review copy was the 500GB version, there are also 250GB, 1TB and 2TB versions available. Since this is an SSD drive, it's lightening fast, as would be expected. However, it also is water and dust resistant and has been drop tested for a 2-meter drop as well as shock and vibration tested. So this baby is truly a road warrior. You simply don't have to worry about losing your data because of a bump or drop as you do with a conventional external disk drive with moving parts. It comes with a USB Type C connector, but if you only have the older USB Type A connections on your computer, there's also an included Type C to Type A adapter. So you're covered either way. It's both PC and Mac compatible right out of the box and comes with a 3-year unlimited warranty. With all of these features, this rugged SSD drive has become my primary go-to travel storage device.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a great option for high-capacity, rugged, portable storage. The unit is bigger than a standard thumb drive but smaller than a 2.5" laptop HDD. Overall size is 3.75" x 2" x 0.375". The case features a rubber edge and IP55 protection; good enough for the occasional fall or splash but I wouldn't drop it in the pool. And the loop at the top corner is a nice touch if you want to use a carabiner to attach it to your backpack. As far as performance, I was seeing read/write speeds around 400MB/s using a Windows 10 laptop and the USB-C connection. And total available capacity is 465GB. Overall, a good performer in a nice package.
