There have been World War II films in the past in Hollywood but none had moved and stunned me as much as Saving Private Ryan. The opening shot battle scene on D-Day in Omaha Beach should be given an Oscar alone. But this was the overwhelmingly deserved best picture Oscar for 1998. And truly on 4K what is more to say. Great clear picture and such awesome sound that’s delivered minute after minute. A must have for war movie fans or even for those die hard action fans, this is a film to be remembered for years to come.

Saving Private Ryan is an absolute triumph in war cinema, delivering a visceral and deeply moving portrayal of World War II. Directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks in a stellar performance, this film stands as a testament to the human spirit amidst the horrors of combat. The opening sequence alone, depicting the harrowing Normandy beach landing, is a cinematic masterpiece that leaves an indelible impact on the viewer. But beyond the stunning visuals, Saving Private Ryan delves into the complexities of war, exploring themes of sacrifice, camaraderie, and the personal toll of conflict. It's a gripping and gut-wrenching journey that resonates long after the credits roll, solidifying its place as a timeless classic in the annals of cinema.

This isn't a review of the film, but if it were it would be 5 stars as well. This is a review of the differences of the 4K release. Image is noticeably sharper, colors are crisper, brighter and everything is more detailed. Just as you would hope and expect. For me I always like paying attention during low light scenes to see the benefits of HDR aside from the obvious bright and vivid colors. Everything in this film looked amazing.

I originally purchased this title back on DVD and intentionally searched for/purchased the DTS version of the movie over the Dolby Digital just for the sound. I didn't bother with it on Blu-ray only because the audio was so good on the original DVD encoded in DTS. Well, that's the past...this 4K version has both Dolby ATMOS and DTS:X so select your favorite option and have at it. As much of a fan as I was of DTS back in the day, Dolby ATMOS blows away DTS:X in my 5.1.2 audio set up (dedicated height/ceiling speakers in the configuration). This movie won an Academy Award in 1999 for Best Sound Effects Editing and it's absolutely validated here. The picture quality is fantastic and I'm in the camp that likes the grainy film like textures. Remember this won additional awards for Effects and Cinematography and is genuinely enjoyable still some 19 years after it was released. I recommend owning this movie in this format.

The first war movie that truly created the true horrors of battle. The first 30 minutes of recreating the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach was incredibly real. The last 30 minutes of the movie was a complete adrenaline rush that had be shaking. I felt like I need to be debriefed after watching this movie. If your not moved by the ending of this movie, then you need your pulse checked.

Of the 25 4K Blurays I own, Saving Private Ryan is hands down the best of the lot. The 4k Scan of the 35mm film yields incredible sharpness and vibrant colors and the remastered Dolby Audio mix makes you duck for cover as rounds fly over your head. Regardless of how many copies of this you own - VHS, DVD, Bluray… this is a must add to your collection!

I guess by now there is really nothing to say about the movie as almost everyone knows about it. But to review the presentation is more the purpose of this review. The sound puts you right in the middle of the beach. You almost start looking over your shoulder to see who is shooting. The video is clear and engaging. It is a true experience.

Even though I've just bought this at best buy not long ago on steelbook blue ray, I saw it was finally on 4k disc and re done audio from 5.1 DTS to Dolby Atmos, which if you have an AVR and 7.2 up to 11.2 ( 5.2.4 is typical) channel setup-- 5 main speakers,2 subwoofers, 4 Atmos/height speakers, you already know how amazing and with big powerful Klipsch subwoofers.. -bone shakingly- impressive 4k movies sound and look. In the end when I want to show a friend my Atmos system, I've finally found a 4k movie that can show off it's capabilities even more so than mad Max.. 5 stars .. worth 22 dollars for 4k just to hear this movie..

With the 75th anniversary of D-Day, revisiting this movie was essential viewing. 21 years after the release, this movie still holds up and is a fantastic glimpse into the sacrifice so many heroes gave in the name of freedom. The picture quality on this 4K is amazing, and I doubt the movie has ever looked better than it does here.

Still One of the Best WWII Movies

While this is still one of the best WWII movies, it's not a movie a tend to watch often due to the nature of the movie. With that out of the way, hows the audio & video in 4K? I surprisingly didn't notice any film grain that stood out while watching it. I'd say the transfer is likely top notch. The HDR impact was minimal, but likely as it should with the type of movie this is. Everything seemed to be really detailed overall. The Atmos track seemed decent but nothing crazy for me. Most youtube reviewers have this in their top 10 for 2018; I don't think it would be in my list though. The only significant base was in the final act with the tanks. It was very impactful in these scenes, but I was expecting a little more throughout the movie.
