First you'll want to ensure that you're tuning your car radio to a "dead", unused frequency. Find a station that does not have an active broadcast and is preferably static covered, and match the frequency on the transmitter to this radio station. The BTFMSR-SP1 has a volume adjustment. Once you've paired and connected your phone to the Bluetooth FM transmitter and are playing music you can press and hold the track forward button on the face of the transmitter or press and hold the volume + button on the remote to ensure the transmitter's volume is turned up all the way. I also cannot listen to music on my phone through AUX while using this. It makes it difficult on a long drive. Other than that, it works great.
