I bought one of these from another on-line store, and used it on my computer. I bought a second for a family member, and after a few minutes it stopped working. I tried it on my computer (which was running one of these at the time), and the second one was dead. OK, I work in the semiconductor industry, and know it can happen. I get the replacement, and same thing, dead in a few minutes, doesn't work on either computer. Send it back, but don't reorder immediately because I know components are made in batches, and there might be a lot of drives with the same bad component out there. Seagate blamed me, said it must be a driver issue, my driver is probably out of date. Nonsense, I was running the same model on my computer, and it worked, the two failed ones didn't. So, I wait a while, reorder, and the new one works. but it has a habit of transfers stopping periodically, then restarting in a minute or so. My "old" one was doing the same thing, plus making noises that had me worried. I've read other reviews that say these are poorly vented, and run very hot, which would shorten the life of the drive and be a general reliability issue. I suspect the stops in transfer may be related to overheating when it runs for a few minutes during a large transfer. I had valuable files on mine that I don't want to have to worry about. I have since replaced it with a WD drive, which works wonderfully. I highly recommend that drive, stay away from this one.
