I had to return this and get a WD My Cloud device instead (which works great) . When accessing the files from a Android device everything appears as a jumbled mess . It displays all files in one long list which is impossible to decipher . Other reviews on the web also stated it does not display files and folders correctly when accessing from another device . It also lost connection frequently and I had to disconnect it to get it to reboot correctly . Useless if away from home which is the main reason I purchased it .

I wanted this to work. This in theory would be a great product but it did not deliver. Very limited instructions and setup and use was very clunky. Trying to figure out if devices were backed up properly was difficult and the whole system is not very user frendly. Ended up just getting back up storage that connects directly to the computer.

    Reliability has exceeded expectations...

I haven't quite hit the timeframe where people had complained of the drive failing, but I hedge on the side of caution when reading those instances, as I can't confirm what could have led to the drives failing. So far, in comparing to my Pogoplug device, the Seagate is more consistent with being identifiable and streaming a video via router connection is not as sporadic as it is with a drive connected through Pogoplug. Anytime a computer needs to be re-started, the drive pops up right away, as a Networked drive, and responds very quickly. Now, the one thing I must say is that, I have a very fast wifi connection at home, so YMMV when it comes to connectivity, but for now, I can say that the drive has been way more reliable than the reports I've seen. If the drive makes it to at least 1 year, I'll be happy with the purposes that I needed it for.

A waste of time and money

I bought this as an IT professional of 20+ years to add a shared hard drive to a branch office because I needed something quick and easy while onsite. I would like for it to have supported Active Directory domains as my bigger Seagate NAS device, but it didn't so I set it up the best I could. I created a device name (yes, don't try this with Windows 8/IE 10 because it WILL NOT ACCEPT CHANGES) and set static IP addressing using my iPad. After I moved the device to its permanent location, it lost its settings... since I had unplugged it, I figured that was my fault so I set it up again. I went around to all my computers, setup the file shares I needed and finally got it all working, for exactly one half of a day. It worked long enough for me to drive 250 miles back home Saturday afternoon only to fail about the time my employees got ready to use it. Once again, with no loss of power, it lost its settings again. I suggest you let it use the default device name and network settings, that is the easiest and when it resets itself, constantly, that is where it is going back, eventually, anyway. Don't buy it unless you like your shared device to be named something like Seagate-0a0b0d

    Quirky but usable

I've paired this with the WD Media Player (multiple copies) with some good success. It's a quirky little setup that has some odd undocumented requirements (e.g. I have to close Explorer before rescanning). The WD Media Players are similarly quirky (sometimes requiring reset for no apparent reason). The pairing of the two technologies has been interesting, but we're making it work. This isn't a simple plug and play proposition, but for someone with some patience and some skill, the results can be pleasing.

I purchased this a little over 6 months ago. It worked fine for a while, then one day it lost all power, all the baby pictures I put on their of my daughter are lost. I called the company and they told me they could get them back for me but it will cost a min. of $400.00. With a baby in the house, I can't afford that. Took it to Best Buy, Geek Squad told me they could possibly get it back for $99.00 but they have to break the cover and this will void the warranty. And I would have to purchase another unit to put the pictures on. Very disappointed in Seagate as a company...I can not recommend them to anyone and will never purchase anything with this name again.

    Unreliable and Awful User Interface

I had the central drive for 13 months before the drive completely crashed. When the drive was working I was continuously frustrated with the user interface. Specifically, the backup scheduler often failed meaning my files were not being backed up. Accessing my files remotely was a tedious task that often resulted in download failure. I've since purchased another hard drive, different brand, and I've been pleased with the interface and reliability.
