This drive is marketed for Chromebooks, and works great for Chromebooks, but can also be used with virtually any system that accepts usb storage, including laptops, PCs, MACs, XBOXs, Playstations, tablets, and even phones with the appropriate adapters. Although you have to keep in mind that transfer speeds will be different than advertised based on adapters used, and the connected devices. There is not much in specs on the box, as Seagate does not typically offer the same types of specs for portable storage like they do for their internal drives. Their website does indicate that this drive is formatted in exFAT , for more of a plug and play feature with more types of devices. exFAT is also a much lighter system than NTFS, and able to handle larger drive sizes over the traditional FAT system, up to 4GB capacities. After confirming with Seagate tech support, this drive is in fact a Hard Disk Drive, not a hybrid or Solid Sate Drive. Although they didn't have much more to offer than that, it's probably reasonable to assume that this is very similar to their 2.5" internal laptop drives that run at 5400RPMs. When I asked Seagate what the actual drives data transfer rates were, they basically said it was 5 Gbps (Giga bits per second), which is the max data rate of USB 3. Keep in mind that when most manufacturers are talking about data speeds they always use bits instead of Bytes. (1 Byte is equal to 8 bits.) I did run some speed tests on my Chromebook, and laptop using the included USB 3 cable and USB 3 ports. I am including pictures of the results. I was also able to transfer 6 GigaBytes of data per minute from my laptop to the drive. So far I am very pleased with this drive, I love how compact, and stylish it is. It's pretty easy to carry around with me for sharing larger data files with ease. I have not had to do anything more than plug it in, to use it on several different devices.

This Seagate Mobile Drive for Chromebook uses 3.0 USB for fast transfers. It's thin and lightweight for easy carrying along with your laptop in a case, backpack, purse, or even a pocket. The included cable is short also so carrying it isn't a problem. Plug and play. My laptop had no problem recognizing it and I had my laptop backed up in less than 3 minutes from plugging it in. The actual backup of 2.81 GB took less than 2 minutes. With 1 TB of space, I won't be filling it up anytime soon. You can choose your preferred timing for backups from every 10 min. to daily with the default set at every hour. I chose aqua as I like the color, it also comes in white. It is compatible with Chrome OS, Windows 7 or higher, Mac OS 10.11 or higher.

I like the style of this drive - it is thin and slim - a real shirt-pocket-sized drive. I spent some time with various benchmark tools and was able to get impressive transfer rates (hovering around 130 MB/s for sequential reads and writes). I attached screenshots from two tests with CrystalDiskMark below - other tools yielded similar results. Actual results transferring large (movie) files back and forth between computer and drive yielded remarkably similar results (never a transfer that averaged below 120 MB/s!). That's really all that matters here, right? I did a lot of testing with huge folders of many small files - and my results are hard to compare with the uniformity assumptions in the benchmarks but I was delighted with my results. This is a slim backup drive that is reliably (consistently) very fast. A fantastic backup drive!

backed up from my old windows machine with no issues, no problems getting to the files on the new chromecast. great value for 1TB. very light and slim, color is as pictured. i'll update if it develops any issues as it's used.

Bought this because I couldn’t connect an older one that I had onto my mac. Apparently after being used with a PC previously, it refused to do anything on a MAC. Therefore I bought this portable one and I love how quickly it works and connects to my Mac. I’ve had absolutely no issues transferring photos, music, videos, movies, or files back and forth. The best part is that it is so tidy and slim and lightweight that it could easily fit into a back pocket.

Seagate - Mobile Drive for Chromebook 1TB Portable External Hard Drive - White Compact mobile drive and I purchased a case that it exactly fits into. I am very satisfied. Several years ago I had purchased a 500 GB Seagate Mobile Drive and am still using it too. These are quality products.

The portable hard drive is extremely sleek and compact. Not sure why it says it's for Chromebook but it works well with any machine. Is very quickly detected and fast. Have a two year old Seagate and this one seems faster.

Bought this when they were running a sale as I needed one quick. It has been a great little drive. The footprint is small and blends in well with my Apple products. Nothing negative about it.

Right out of the box worked perfect. Time Machine detected the drive and started the back up process right away. Small and light weight. Great drive for the money

What can I say? It does not get much easier than the use of this portable external hard drive. Plug it straight in to a USB port on your chrome book, or like me, your windows laptop, and start transferring files. Once I plugged it in a white LED light on the top of the drive came on. My laptop recognized the hard drive immediately and opened the file window for me to drag and drop files straight to the hard drive. Transfer speeds were fast. I tested the drive with several 4k UHD video files and it had no issues downloading the files. The drive is compact and light weight. The frame work on the exterior of the drive feels entirely made of plastic so it is not protected from unintentional drops. The drive is advertised as having 1TB of drive space which is amazing for something so compact. All in all, this is a great external portable hard drive and it works well for expanding your storage capabilities.

I was in the market for another storage solution when the opportunity to get this device came along. I needed a larger storage solution as my work is photo heavy and I need the room to store photos. The device is simple and arrived with the drive, USB 3.0 Micro-B cable and quick start guide. I opened the packaging, connected to my laptop, it was recognized right away, and I set up some folders and started transferring pictures. I had 400+ pictures to transfer, so I walked away for a few minutes. When I came back to my laptop, the photos had already finished transferring and I was done, quick and easy. The mobile drive is compact, about the size of a 3x5 index card and about 1/2" thick. East to drop into a pocket or fits easily into your laptop bag. If you are in need of a portable storage solution, this is 1TB, I believe this is a very good choice. I would recommend this highly.

Since this is advertised as "For use with Chromebooks" I tried it with two Chromebooks. One is from about 3 years ago and the other is from this year. Both are running Chrome OS version 76.0.3809.136. I also tried it on a Windows 10 laptop. It, of course, worked fine on the Chromebooks and my Windows laptop. The hard drive is small and light weight, definitely easy to put in any kind of laptop bag. Mine has an aqua accent color on most of the top and it wraps around the end. It's not just painted on, it's some type of material, maybe a fabric, that's on there, giving it a nice textured look and feel. It's powered by the USB port so there is no extra power brick to plug in or anything - just one simple included cord to go from the hard drive to the Chromebook or whatever device you're using it with. When plugging it into a Chromebook you will get a notification from the "Files" app that says "Removable device detected". The notification gives you the option to open it in the Files app. I haven't noticed anything Chromebook specific about this hard drive but there doesn't need to be. It works with no software installation needed. The only file on it that was put there by Seagate is a "Warranty.pdf" which gives all the warranty info in many languages. I did performance testing using a Windows 10 laptop. It's a few years old but it's an i7 with SSD (fast storage). I was very impressed with the performance! I only tested coping some large files to it but it got an impressive 130MB/s on the 4GB and 5GB files I tested with. That's very good! I have a similar external 2TB drive, though not as new, and it only got 100MB/s with the same files on the same PC. I think 130MB/s is excellent for a small portable drive like this! If you're looking for a portable 1TB drive this is a nice one! I like the look of it and the performance is very good, better than I expected with what I thought was an inexpensive mobile drive!

Just received my 1TB External HD by Seagate. Its marketed for use with Chromebooks specifically. So I started up my Lenovo Yoga C630 Chromebook. Inside the package is the 1TB External HD, the USB cord, and user documentation. Connected the USB to my Chromebook and the HD and my Lenovo Yoga C630 immediately identified/located the hard drive. No other instructions to be made. The HD is very sleek and compact. It comes in Aqua or Cloud White, which the only I have. It also supports USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. Was able to quickly download all of my photos from our recent beach trip and save them onto the Seagate HD with no issues. File transferring was quick and easy. Curiosity did start to get the best of me and i wondered if this HD was also compatible with other OSs. Booted up both my Acers laptops (both running Windows 10) and also my Macbook Air (running macOS 10.13) all of which I was able to download and transfer files, photos, ect. without any issues. Though marketed for Chromebooks, I would recommend this Seagate HD to anyone looking for a sleek and compact design that basically supports and is compatible with any laptop/desktop.

The Seagate 1TB Mobile Drive for Chromebook is a thin, light space-saving little hard drive with a nice fabric-like surface. It comes with a USB cable and is meant for the Chromebook series of laptops featuring Google's Chrome operating system. Most backup and storage drives are designed for Windows or Mac machines, this drive has no self-installing backup program. The beauty of this drive--it is recognized as a drive in Windows, Chrome *and* Android Pie! Just for kicks I connected the USB cable to a USB-C adapter, and plugged it into a Moto G7, and there it was in Settings--Storage, labeled as an external drive with the preset Chrome folder structure. I had no trouble accessing it's contents in all three devices--Chromebook, PC and phone. Once I plugged it into the phone, it also wrote it's own Android folders to the Seagate drive. The USB 3.0/2.0 connection makes for zippy-fast file transfers. It didn't contain it's own native backup program, but there are many free and paid apps you can install in Chrome or the Android phones that will keep selected files and folders copies to the Mobile Drive when it is plugged in. Sure, Dropbox, Google Drive and Box let you keep things safe in the cloud, but some of us like the DIY approach with a drive you can lock up or take with you for safekeeping. The retail of $59 makes this an affordable solution to file backup and transfer among many devices.

Do not fret that this says "For Use With Chromebook", it will work with pretty much any OS you will try. Me being me, I used a USB-C dongle and it even works with Android, but Android wanted to format it which was not actually required. I could read the files on it and write to it with no issue from my phone without reformatting. I my eyes the Chromebook branding is basically saying that there is no driver required. The drive side of the cable uses USB 3.0 Micro B connection. Standard USB-A for the computer side. I only mention that in case you lose the cable. The drive itself will fit in a shirt pocket. The cable hanging out could be a real fashion statement. With the size of Chromebooks, laptops and many smaller form factor computers (thinking Raspberry Pi like devices) having a TB handy is always a good thing. For Mac fans this would be great for Time Machine backups. All in all, this is a really good drive for almost any external purpose. Add in a dongle and you can use this almost anywhere.

I have been looking for an external drive for my son Chromebook as it came with 32GB drive. Seagate - Mobile Drive For Chromebook 1TB Portable External Hard Drive is a perfect solution for Chromebook to address space issue. It came with Seagate Mobile Drive for Chromebook 1TB Portable External Hard Drive and USB 3.0 cable - 1.5 ft. It is very small and lightweight and easy to carry as well. Setup is very easy. I have plugged the USB cable in mobile drive and Chromebook. It automatically recognized the hard drive. I have tested with regular windows PC and it is working without any issue though it is advertised as drive for Chromebooks. This mobile drive for Chromebook build quality is very solid similar like other Seagate products. I have started the backup of entire drive in Chromebook and it completed less than few mins. I have been using Seagate hard drives ranging from 1TB to 8TB for backup my computer files, videos and photos. My son is using this drive everyday to store the school homework, projects etc. I am very pleased with the build quality, transfer speed and size of this drive. I highly recommend this drive to everyone who is looking external drive for Chromebook.
