I had been apprehensive on purchasing a mattress in a box despite how popular they seem to have become because I just assumed they couldn't be as good as a "regular" mattress (including hybrid types like I have and enjoy on another bed) so when I got this I was prepared to be disappointed. I can admit I was wrong! The mattress arrived in what I thought was an impossibly small box for a decently thick mattress (looks were deceiving of course). It was heavily rolled in plastic wrap but was fairly easy to open up and unroll. Although no instructions were in the box I did a quick search just to see how long it would take for the mattress to be sleep ready (answers ranged from a few hours to over 24 hours). In just over 4 hours I measured the mattress to see how close it was to the advertised 10"....and it was right around the 10". I did let it continue to sit until late that night (around 15 hours) before actually using it. But seriously, setup was as simple as it can get. The mattress is definitely more comfortable than I could ever imagine. It is advertised as a medium firmness...it leans more firm than soft but it's not too firm. I thought I would miss having a traditional pillow top mattress but I really don't. Unlike some memory foam mattresses I've tried in the past I don't get too hot in the middle of night with this one. It's honestly so comfortable that I almost hate to get out of bed in the morning. Only time will tell how well it holds up but with a 10 year warranty I suspect I will get some great years of use out of it.

With the advent of the "mattress-in-a-box", there are now more options for how (or where) to get your new mattress. Being able to have a mattress delivered directly to your home via a shipping service, all packaged and bundled neatly in an easy-to-maneuver box, is super convenient. That is, when compared to the 'traditional' way of going to a mattress or department store. More and more companies, are offering such an option for the mattresses they sell. New brands have made their presence known in recent years, which gives the consumer plenty of choices. Serta is a brand name well-known and respected in the bedding industry. So I was quite interested in trying out this Sheep Retreat (Medium) 10" Gel Memory Foam Mattress-in-a-Box for myself, and see how it compares to another brand's mattress that I already own. First of all, the unboxing. This is a simple and easy, straightforward procedure. Just follow the included set-up guide. There's an 'opening tool' to slice open the thick plastic sheathing your new rolled-up mattress. Be careful and take your time. Oh, it's a good idea to have the area you'll be doing the unboxing (theoretically the bedroom you'll be using the mattress in) ready ahead of time, and give yourself plenty of room to move around. Be mindful that the rolled-up foam mattress will expand, slowly filling out to its full shape. There may be a slight 'smell' upon taking the mattress out of the plastic wrapping. This is normal and will dissipate after a few days. If you've never owned, or slept on, this type of gel foam mattress before, give yourself several weeks to adjust and acclimate to how this mattress feels to sleep on. As with any new mattress, it takes time to let your body get used to the difference. Even though I'm familiar with how a foam mattress feels to sleep upon, I'm having to get used to the feel of this Serta as there are noticable differences between it, and my other foam mattress. For one, I'm a back sleeper, and my husband is a stomach sleeper. What type of sleeper you are should always be a factor when choosing a mattress, and in the case of a gel foam one like this Serta here, the thickness of the top foam layer should be considered, as well. Normally, my husband and I prefer a mattress medium-to-firm. However, we decided to give this 10" gel foam (medium) mattress a try. I will say the build quality is there. The mattress itself is stylish to look at, just sitting there on the foundation. Fit of the sheets was good, no issues at all with the thickness of the mattress, and they stayed put too, no matter how much we moved around. Actually, that's another great feature of these types of foam mattresses. The material "absorbs" the shifting motion when another person rolls over or gets out of bed, making for a better (and less interupted) night's sleep. Although the medium firmness of this Serta Sheep Retreat Gel Foam Mattress is slightly different than I'm used to, and I'm still adjusting to the newness of the 'feel' night after night, I'm liking it so far. So good.

Have never done a bed in the box before but decided to move to memory foam from a softer pillow-top mattress. This mattress is very firm and after 2 months my wife and I have both noticed better, deeper sleep and a great reduction in back pain. Please note this mattress is not for sleeping on your back/stomach and is intended for side sleeping, if you sleep on your back or stomach you will not like the feeling when you wake up. Very much worth the cost and very easy to install.

Great value. It is very comfortable and supportive. Never purchased a mattress in a box before. Would advise anyone considering this Serta Mattress from Best Buy, to buy it.

first time buying a bed in a box and this was a great choice.

I absolutely love this bed! I purchased one for my daughter last year and love it, so I decided to take the plunge and order one for myself. We had no issues getting it to expand. There was a smell for a day or two, but we aired out the room and it was gone pretty quick.

Mattress is super comfortable. Definitely was worth the money.

Decent, not the best but not the worst. I wouldn’t spend 500$ on it again but it’s nice.

Me and my husband loved it, we made that decision after a long thought process but so much happy of our choice.

The Serta Sheep Retreat (medium 10”) is very comfortable. I used it on a platform bed base. It is made of gel memory foam which does prevent the over-heating that memory foam mattresses used to have – this is the most important point of these types of mattresses. So that is very good. The gel foam is so much better than the old memory foam that I would be very careful to ensure your mattress is like this one and has the gel beads in the memory foam. This mattress has the medium softness that I prefer; and I would avoid a very soft foam mattress since a very soft mattress may compress too much and cause some over-heating at night with or without the gel bead composition. My opinion is that you want medium or firm gel memory foam. One last point on softness/firmness - over time you may feel a mattress is too soft or too firm. With a 10 inch mattress you are able to add a 2-inch mattress topper with more or less firmness. If you have a 12 inch mattress then it is a bit more difficult to add a topper since you may be making the mattress too high too sit on the edge. So that’s another reason I think 10” is a good depth to use. But that’s only my personal experience. The delivery in a box is great. But I would recommend a small hand truck to move it around in the box as it is a bit heavy for one person to move. The materials are top-notch on this mattress. You will need to let the mattress decompress once you get it out of the bag and into the fresh air. It won’t reach the full 10 inch depth till about a full week out of the plastic bag that it is vacuum sealed in. This is a three-core mattress that provides better support and comfort so you do need to let each layer fluff up. I noticed that the top edge of the mattress was at first a little S-shaped, but after 10 days it straightened out. The mattress is rolled up when it comes out of the box so that may cause various temporary distortions. I do recommend this mattress very highly. It ticked all the boxes for me and I just love it over my old mattress.

Received my Serta Sheep Retreat Medium 10" Gel Memory Foam Mattress a couple weeks ago and this mattress has proved to be better than I expected. After having moved into a new condo, I had been planning on getting a new mattress for the second bedroom this year. However, this mattress came along at the right time. This mattress showed up nicely packed inside a smaller box than my previously purchased mattress that I got a couple years ago. Seeing it being small, I assumed (bad mistake on my part) that this would be easier to pick up. Boy was I wrong. Once I mustered up the strength to pick this box up, I quickly noticed exactly how heavy this thing was. A queen-sized mattress with all the air sucked out is extremely heavy. I caution you will need another person to help you lift and move this to where you want it to go. I carried this thing upstairs by myself. Along with a nicely rolled up and tight mattress, Serta included an information card and also a cutting tool (similar to a letter opener) to assist with cutting the plastic from around the rolled up mattress. Once the plastic is removed, it will immediately begin to unravel and fold out. From here on its pretty much easy, though still heavy and possibly somewhat heavier. But with assistance, simply place it onto your platform bedframe and voila. Per Serta's instructions, it can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours for the mattress to fully expand. Which worked out in my favor seeing as how I was going to be away for the next 48 hours. Another tip that I learned through YouTube is that cold air helps speed up the expanding period. With it being winter time and being away from the house (without the heat on) this may help. When I finally was able to relax and lay down on my new bed, I slept like a baby. The memory foam felt amazing and to me it felt that although its kinda firm that it cradled and contoured itself somewhat to my body. I wake up fully relaxed with no aches and pains from my back. Actually feel refreshed.

Having purchased many different brands of mattresses throughout my life, I’ve grown to trust Serta to provide a good quality mattress for a fair price. This 10” Gel Memory foam mattress did not disappoint. With all of the start-up mattress brands in the market, it’s tough to determine who provides a differentiated mattress. Serta has now entered the gel foam market and has developed a quality mattress. We took our time unboxing the mattress as we knew we should place the box in the bedroom where the mattress will be used. We are using box springs underneath the Serta so we placed the mattress right on top of the box springs after we got it out of the box. We watched some unboxing videos to better-understand our approach and have learned to use the cutting tool supplied by Serta instead of your own scissors. This will reduce the risk of cutting the mattress. Once we opened the seal and let the mattress start opening up, it took quite a while for it to start coming to life. By the end of the first day, it started to look like something we could sleep on but it did take several days for it to get to the full 10” thickness. It also took a few days for the “new gel mattress” smell to dissipate. We let the mattress air out a few days before we put bedding on it. The quality of the material is excellent. It looks like a modern foam mattress and seems to be very durable. The quality of the shipping materials were also excellent. The instructions were easy to follow and informative. We like a medium-firmness mattress and believe this delivers as promised. Once we had our first few nights on the mattress, we woke up the next morning with no back or neck pain. Minimizing back pain is probably the biggest factor for me in choosing the firmness that works for me.

If you are in the market for a new mattress, you can’t go wrong with the Serta - Sheep Retreat Medium 10” Gel Memory Foam Mattress-in-a-box. The fact that you can have a mattress shipped to you in as small a box as it came in still blows my mind but what makes this even better is that you are getting a great quality mattress in that box. Setup was very easy and straightforward. Simply open the box and carefully remove the plastic packaging material from the mattress. At that point, the mattress decompresses itself over time. It is good to let the mattress fully decompress and air out for an extended period of time (I recommend at least 4 hours) prior to first use since it does have a bit of a smell from the packaging and manufacturing process, but it isn’t too bad and dissipates well on its own. What is really great about memory foam mattresses like this is how well they absorb movement. I tend to shift around a lot at night but this mattress does a great job of absorbing the movement instead of causing it to ripple around and be felt by my sleeping partner. I also really like the firmness of this mattress which feels just right to me. It isn’t overly stiff but it also isn’t too soft and unsupportive and I have found that I am able to get a good, comfortable nights sleep no matter what position I am in. Overall, I am very impressed with the Serta - Sheep Retreat Medium 10” Gel Memory Foam Mattress-in-a-box and I highly recommend it!

This Serta gel memory foam mattress strikes a great balance between soft and firm. The gel memory foam works better than the typical memory foam in terms of heat buildup. I tend to get hot easily and this mattress was very comfortable in that regard. The mattress came in a box, tightly wrapped in plastic. It was a bit difficult to cut off the plastic, being very careful to not cut into the fabric. The instructions say you can sleep on it right away but that it may take up to 48hrs for the mattress to fully expand. However it took far less time than that. There was no significant odor when opening the mattress either. All in all this is a great mattress!

I have been needing a new mattress for quite a while now. The bed in box is very easy to set up. Easier for me to get in and out of bed. Only thing I really have to say is hard to wait days for mattress to take shape to be able to sleep on

So I have suffered from chronic back and neck pain for over a decade now and I was excited to try a new mattress that could possibly help alleviate these issues. From the description of the bed, it seemed like a good fit for me and my girlfriend. However, upon receiving the mattress and taking it out of the box and unwrapping it, boy this thing was FIRM like a rock. So we waited 24 hours, it softened up a little but not much. 48 hours went by and it was marginally less firm, but I would give this an 8.5/10 on the firmness scale. If you are looking for plush, this is not your mattress. The top layer of memory foam is just incredibly hard, it does sink, but it's by no means "comfortable" We both did not sleep well and tried out the bed for 1 week but always woke up sore and tired. We switched back to our other memory foam mattress in a box which is much more plush but still supportive. So just a warning, if you hate firm or anything close to firm, do not get this. If you love rock hard beds then this will be for you. However, I can not reccommend it to anyone else, too much pain and loss of sleep caused by it. Also, this mattress is not 10" when I measured it was 8.5-9 depending on the area you measured, which isn't cool. My other mattress from a competitor is 10" and actually measures to this. Also the stiching and the quality of the fabric is not that great, it looks on the cheaper end and the under of the bed just is a wrinkly piece of fabric and the corners not very tight, very loose and floppy stiching.

I gave this item 3 stars due to being overly firm to the point where both my wife and I had to put a softer topper on it to make it work and be able to sleep on it. If you don’t mind a really firm bed that is very well made and great quality then this is for you. Maybe our problem is we slept on it after getting the delivery so it only had 3 to 4 hours of taking its shape. Sometimes these need up to 24 hours to get the full effect. Anyway I think this is a personal preference issue more of a Serta issue. Ours was the queen size and like I said it was heavy but really good quality mattress. One day we will take the soft topper off and see if it softened up.
