    You the man Holmes

Greetings again from the darkness. Great literature seldom makes for great cinema. The mediums are vastly different. However great literature, in the right hands, can make for very entertaining cinema. Such is the case with Guy Ritchie's interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest character. Mr. Ritchie provides us with quite a departure from the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce "Holmes and Watson". Here we get dazzling special effects and near super-human feats and stunts. Another twist is that this Holmes here is no meticulous, fastidious bore in real life. In fact, he lives more like a frat boy or rock star - replete with trashed room and bouts of isolation. What is not missing is Holmes' world class attention to detail. The story here is multi-layered and actually very interesting, if not a bit high-minded and high-concept. The still-under-construction Tower Bridge plays a role in the film and the bleakness and gray of London is captured perfectly. Of course, I won't reveal any details of the story other than to say the "good" guys are out to get a real bad guy here ... wonderfully played by the always solid Mark Strong, who may or may not be dead. That always makes for an interesting case! Support from Rachel McAdams and Eddie Marsan are fine, but Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are the real stars as Holmes and Watson. As odd as it seems, they really do have a buddy factor that works well on screen. Downey's physicality has always set him apart from many contemporary actors ... he moves like a dancer and fights like a champion. Jude Law is often too pretty-boy for me, but he really does a nice job of capturing the reluctant sidekick with complimentary skills. This is a BIG movie! It is made to be a rollicking good time with tons of popcorn munched. Smaller kids will not be able to follow the story, but anyone who has read a Holmes story (and isn't against a little artistic license) should see the film. It is extremely entertaining and fun to watch.

I enjoy directors that take material and tell it faithfully, but in a modern way. This cast delivers. A fun movie.

It may be called "Sherlock Homes," but it is not like the old traditional Sherlock Homes, but overall it is good movie. I'm not a big fan of movies using old names and being different from the original book or movie/series, but still a pretty good movie for the most part. Movie should not be shown to kids under 13, like the rating suggest. Also look into the second movie if you enjoy this one. Both are pretty good movies.

I've always been a fan of Guy Ritchie films and I was thrilled when he was picked for the Sherlock Holmes series. The plot is good but it can take some time to get used to how Ritchie films and directs. The plot also could have been a little better. If you're not used to this type of cinematography you may be caught off guard at first. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were a perfect fit together.

Very entertaining! I enjoyed Guy Ritchie's take on the classic character. Robert Downey Jr may take his characterization a bit too far but really the whole film is over the top. Great entertainment in my opinion.

This is Guy Ritchie's take on a modern-day Sherlock in a period setting. It's great if you go with an empty mind and not expecting a typical Sherlock Holmes treatment. However, for a purist, it can get a little jarring. Four stars for fun - one star less for the extra bit which is missing.

Has all the quality of a steelbook, clasps work great to keep it shut, disc is kept in place well. Artwork on the front and back looks good, though the back cover almost seems low resolution. I believe it only comes with one Blu-Ray disc.

Both are great movies. The first one you need to pay pretty close attention to so you don't miss anything. Watching it a second time helps put it all together. Definitely fun watching both films back to back because they tie together nicely.

Just watched this the other night. It's a good movie. Can't wait for the 3rd one to come out. It gets better watching the 3rd or 4th time. Love the 2nd one even more.

Not the best Sherlock story of all time, but it's a fun modernized take on the character. Blu-ray quality is good, as is the picture quality.

Let's see- Sherlock Holmes meets James Bond meets Steampunk? Something like that. A great story of it's own, just don't get upset that it's nothing at all like official Holmes canon.

Classic Robert Downey Jr. wit, almost to the fault where it feels like he's just doing another Ironman movie without the suit.

Downey's version of Sherlock Holmes is enjoyable, but a bit too action-oriented to ring true to Doyle's original character.
