If you are one of those people who likes to juggle music, podcasts and phone calls all at the same time,while you are hitting the exercise trail, you can't go wrong with the new Shokz OpenDots 2 ear buds. The sound quality that comes out of these little clip-on buds is nothing short of amazing, especially listening to music. And they are pretty darn comfortable too. Weighing in at less than 7 grams, these tiny wonders simply clip onto you ear. One end rests close to your ear canal and the other wraps around the other side, holding the earbud comfortably in place. Think of it as a bendy, soft clothes pin. Like all Skokz open-ear buds, this one does not require you to jam anything into your ear canal, which can become uncomfortable pretty fast. The round bulbous end, which contains the tiny high tech speaker, simply rests in that space outside the canal opening. The other end, which contains the battery and touch controls, wraps around to the outside of the ear. The fit feels a bit lose (which makes it more comfortable over the long run) but it all stays in place if you are moving around At first blush, you may be confused at as to which end goes where. But once you get that sorted out and understand the whole clip-on approach, the OpenDots 2 is easy to use. Just make sure to follow the instructions for Bluetooth pairing and firmware upgrades (the buds HAVE to be in the charging box with the lid OPEN to complete that process.) You'll need to download the Shokz App to complete the firmware update and access the EQ controls, including Dolby Atmos. Dolby is "upgraded" on the OpenDots 2, vs last year's model, and really does improve music with wider sound field (but is off by default). The app is fairly simple and includes a walk-through on Bluetooth setup and how the touch controls work. Speaking of which, I found those pretty easy to use, once you understand what you have to do. Touch controls often can be finicky on devices this small but I found these work better than most. Oh, and don't worry about which bud goes in which ear. It does not matter, because the buds figure out which sound goes where. A little Shokz magic: Dynamic ear detection. Sound quality is remarkably good for something this small, a characteristic of most Shokz products. Expect Decent bass and clean mids and highs when listening to music, courtesy of an improved Bassphere 2.0 dual-driver speaker system. Shokz says it cuts distortion by 70 percent. I found the sound very balanced, despite the fact they buds sit outside your ear canal. They get plenty loud as well, something lesser open ear designs struggle with. The OpenDos 2 buds come with their own tiny wireless charging case and a short USB C connector (but no charger). Battery life on the buds is rated at 10 hours. And they can last up to 40 hours if you recharge them via the self charging case. Of course OpenDots 2 also handles phone calls, picking up your voice via one bone-conducting microphone and two more traditional-air conducting mikes. All three employee AI noise canceling technology for the clearest sound. These buds are NOT fully waterproof but have an IP57 water resistance rating, which means they should keep sweat and light rain at bay. In the end, this is another winner for Shokz, which I think makes the best open ear buds on the market.

I don’t like anything deep into ky ears- so these work well- but I’m a very loud d warehouse mill/gym it’s hard to hear with volume all the alway up!

If you have big ears, you’ll have an issue with this to get full depth into what you’re listening to. However, these don’t even budge to fall off my ear even though they’re big!

With excellent sound and rich bass, the Shokz excel in providing clear phone calls with 3 microphones inside. After downloading the Shokz smartphone application, connecting the Shokz earbuds to my smartphone via bluetooth was quick and easy with the earbuds case being open and the earbuds still inside. The Shokz earbuds show up under the smartphone's device list as "OpenDots by Shokz". Once connected to your smartphone, open the Shokz application to check for any firmware updates to the earbuds. If yes, the update only takes a few minutes and you will be ready to go with the latest updated firmware. While these Shokz On-ear clip-on earbuds are not noise cancelling, they work well allowing you to take calls and hear music while hearing outside sounds. I’m a die-hard over-ear headphone person who also lives in traditional in-ear earbuds, so open-ear tech was never on my radar — until the Shokz OpenDots 2 caught my eye. Almost three weeks in, here’s my honest take. The good: No more ear itch. If you’ve ever dealt with that uncomfortable, itchy feeling from in-ears during long sessions, open-ear is genuinely a relief. The OpenDots 2 sit entirely outside your ear canal, making them a dream for all-day wear. You hear your surroundings naturally, which I loved on walks, at the gym, and during my commute. They’re also lightweight and secure enough that I never worried about them falling out mid-run. The mic is surprisingly solid; people hear me clearly on calls. And once the fit clicked (give it a few days), I forgot they were on. If you want comfort, awareness, and solid calls, this is where they shine. The trade-offs: Sound quality is a whole different experience from sealed earbuds or over-ears. In loud environments, you’ll need to crank the volume to hear clearly. If sound isolation matters most, look elsewhere; if comfort and awareness matter more, reset your expectations going in. Battery life is decent, just not the longest out there. Gesture controls have a learning curve, but it’s not impossible to get the hang of. The frustrating stuff: The connection drops when not in extended use, so I’d have to reconnect via Bluetooth more often than I’d like. The “find my earbuds” feature only works if they’re out of the case and connected to your phone. Honestly, I’m more likely to lose the case than the earbuds themselves, and you can’t track the case. That feels like a real missed opportunity. Bottom line: The Shokz OpenDots 2 are good value if you go in knowing what you’re getting. Buy them if you want comfort, awareness, and a different tool for specific situations. Skip them if you need your main pair to do everything. Recommended with caveats.

Last year, I was using the Shokz OpenSwim to listen to music, and my favorite feature was how easily I could enjoy my music while still being able to hear everything around me. Other headphones offer this feature with modes such as transparency mode and similar features, but the OpenSwim took it to another level. It was the first time I felt like I could be enjoying music while also hearing my surroundings. The only downside of the OpenSwim for me was that I'm not really a swimmer, so I wasn't using them for their intended purpose. Eventually, I gave them to my wife who swims regularly and she absolutely loves them. I went back to using my other headphones until recently that I got the opportunity to try the Shokz OpenDots 2, and honestly, I haven’t used other headphones since. They are perfect for me in several ways. First, the comfort level is great and easily surpasses my AirPods Pro. I can literally wear these all day. I often leave them on even when I'm not listening to anything because they're that comfortable. I am also one of those sleepers that likes to fall asleep listening to ambient sounds or audiobooks, and with my previous headphones I would eventually feel discomfort when lying on my side. The OpenDots 2 completely solve that problem. They don't cause any pain, and they stay in place much better, so I'm no longer searching for a missing earbud in the morning. Second, the charging case is slim and compact, just like other premium brands. For me, this is a bigger deal than it sounds because I don't always want to carry a bulky case to the gym or keep one in my pocket. The OpenDots 2 case is small and easy to carry. It also charges via USB C which means I can use the same charger as my phone. As for sound quality, I've been very impressed with them. I rarely listen to music on full blast, but if you do turn them up, they can feel like other headphones where it is more immersive, and you don’t hear much of your surroundings. For me though, the biggest benefit is being able to enjoy music, podcasts, or audiobooks while still staying aware of my surroundings. Whether I'm walking, working, or just going about my day, I feel more connected to my environment instead of being completely isolated from it. I've also taken several phone calls while using them, and both I and the people on the other end of the call have had no issues with call quality. Overall, I highly recommend the Shokz OpenDots 2. No joke, it’s become my favorite pair of headphones because they are super comfortable to wear during the day, while sleeping, and I can still hear what’s going on around me. Love them!

Ok, so context for how I use earbuds. Mostly for activity. I do not typically just wear them in settings where there is not a lot of other noise or things going on. For that reason I am typically skeptical of this type of open ear bud. I have had units in the past that were not loud enough of efficient enough at blocking out outside noise. However, if you're considering this set, that should not be a concern. I have mowed the yard, gone for a run, and done numerous sessions at the gym with all the grunts and weights being slammed. Not once did these fail to provide ample volume and sound quality. Yes, even while pushing around a loud gas mower I was still jamming right along to my playlist. The sound quality of these ear buds is impeccable. The accompanying phone app with equalizer control is extremely easy to use and gives you a lot of options to play around with and set it for how you like. At first, the way you put these buds on your ear is very weird. But once you're used to it, they are actually very comfortable to wear. They aren't intrusive to your ear canal so if you don't like ear buds for that reason, this set has an answer. Battery life so far has been quite strong. I fully charged the case when I got them, and in about a week and a half with roughly 1-1.5 hours of use nearly every day, I have not run them dry yet. Finally, the only complaint I could possibly have and this is very minor... the tap controls are a little finnicky. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't... but I already have the habit of using my smart watch or phone itself rather than these tap controls, so a non-issue for me. If you are the type that likes to tap your ear to skip track of volume up frequently, just know that I've had only about an 80-85% rate of making it work on the first attempt. Overall, absolutely recommend these buds. The best of open ear style I have ever used by far.

The Shokz OpenDots 2 are my second pair of clip-on style earbuds and these are a huge upgrade from my JLab Flex Trues. The audio is louder, clearer, and they stay positioned better than my JLabs which move around my earlobes when I'm doing yard work. The Shokz connect to my phone faster than my Airpods Pros which surprised me. The Shokz case is a black two-tone/two-material pillbox style similar to the Airpods case, but slightly bulkier. It fits comfortably in your hand, but I wish it were a tiny bit flatter. The case uses USB-C and/or wireless, and the earbuds make an audible connection tone when you put them on your ears. Calls are crystal clear, and I don't get a deafening notification interruption from other apps (which sometimes happens with my Airpods). The battery life is plenty long (I haven't run them down yet) and the case is rated for like 40 hours of audio with a 5 minute quick-charge which gives them another 2 hours of audio. Plenty for a long trip or other extended use case scenario. The earbuds themselves feel premium and rest perfectly at the edge of my ear. The touch controls took a moment to get used to. You tap the right barrel twice (the part outside of your ear) to increase the volume, the left to decrease. Tap once to pause. Overall these are a really nice set of earbuds and will take their spot as my new favorite audio-on-the-go option. If you've never tried an open-ear style earbud, give these a try. You'll love being able to listen to music/YouTube/audiobooks while still being able to hear what's going on around you.

I don’t like in-canal headphones unless I’ve showered and cleaned my ears within the past 12 hours. I also don’t like AirPods 4 that don’t go in deep but never stay in. I’ve always been on the lookout for headphones I can wear at work that won’t fall out and don’t need to be jammed into my ears. I had some Bose that went behind my ears a decade ago but they were large and obtrusive. I had the Bose that are similar to these but they clamped way too tightly, to the point of being uncomfortable. These OpenDots behave essentially the same as the Bose, but they don’t have as aggressive a clamping force. Setting them up was very simple: I opened the case and they popped up in my Bluetooth menu. From there, they clipped on to my ears and played my music. Sound isn’t going to thump unless you jam the drivers deep toward your ear canal, but then they are a little out of position and uncomfortable. In a natural position, they are extremely comfortable and the sound is clear. I wouldn’t listen to heavy bass music with them, but they work. You can also hear everything around you and they will never fall out. All in all, I’m very happy with these. The magnetic case keeps them charged and they’re an excellent addition to my daily routine. They pause when you remove them and the on device squeeze controls work intuitively and reliably. Highly recommended!

I bought the OpenDots 2 but inside the box (sealed) came the OpenDots 1. When I reached out to customer support from BB, they couldn't do anything about it. I have to reach Shokz to get the proper item.

These are great headphones for exercise if you come in with appropriate expectations. They are small, open-ear headphones, so the bass basically isn't present. This can result in music sounding a little muddy as the mid frequencies seem over-emphasized. Despite this, the audio is generally good. For podcasts, you're not really even going to notice unless you're used to listening to 99% Invisible with Roman Mars on real headphones or speakers (bass-heavy voice). The battery life is amazing. I've been using these for at least a couple of hours every day, usually more, and when I connect them to my phone, the battery level is showing 60% for the case and 100% for the earbuds. If you keep them in the case, I'd expect you can go at least a week or two without having to charge with moderate use. These, as with any Shokz headphones, are meant for exercise, and I'd say that these are comfortable enough to wear for a couple of hours at a time while still being able to hear the environment around you. If you're going for a run and need to be aware of traffic, these are a great option.

Shokz has done it again with the OpenDots 2. I was quite unsure about the new clip-on style of earbuds as I assumed that the audio quality would fail to compete in with in-ear buds or even the over the ear clip earbuds. I do love my over the ear clip earbuds, but the case and the clips themselves are larger than I'm looking for. I've also never found a pair of in-ear buds that actually stay in! The OpenDots 2 fixed everything and I'm never going back. On the most important front, these sound incredible. They get loud while maintaining a robust soundstage. I regularly checked over my shoulder thinking that there was someone behind me but no, it was just how well these headphones can create a full sound immersion, just being clipped to your ears. Speaking of clipped to your ears, I never had any discomfort and never had them fall off, even when exercising with them. The microphones proved to be excellent as well, with the other side of phone calls reporting no difference then when I held the phone up to my head. These are easy to pair to your phone, Android or iOS. It also has Android and iOS based tracking which is great because these clips are small and I could easily see myself losing them. The convenience continues including wired and wireless charging as well as the ability for the earbuds to detect which ear they are clipped on so you can put either earbud on either ear. My complaints are small. The sound quality out of the box is good, but only once you use the app and turn on Dolby Audio do you get the best audio. And while the play pause on these headphones are easy, once it gets into a series of taps and squeezes to do different things, I immediately forget and really only use the play/pause function since it's a simple squeeze. These earbuds are worth it. Regardless if you are like me wanting small earbuds, but also don't want in-ear buds, these have fantastic sound, long battery life, and a simplicity that I love. Shokz has been on a roll lately and I can't wait to see what they do next. I am a huge fan of the clip-on style earbuds. After having been through several different brands' take on the format, I'm back to Shokz and their Opendots 2. They follow the typical design of barrel and earpiece joined by a half ring that clips around your ear, but there are some considerations that Shokz has made, such as having a softer rubberlike material cushioning the areas that have contact with your ear. The ring portion is made of the same material, allowing some flex for a more comfortable fit. While the Dolby Audio mode that can be enabled through the app does provide some added warmth to the mix, not unlike the difference between a song on a cd vs one on vinyl, I find that it adds too much fuzz to voices, causing everyone to sound slightly like they are talking through a kazoo. Otherwise, audio is nice and clear, and the volume is the loudest I've found in all the different brands of clip-on earbuds that I've had. Even on my commute via elevated train, I haven't had to raise the volume on my phone more than 50% in order to listen to music at a comfortable volume while still being able to hear everything around me. The bass, especially in the bass eq mode, is probably the deepest that I've experienced with this style of earbuds. The charging case is pretty standard, other than the decorative silver band. I do like the pearl white color, it reminds me of my limited edition Gundam Base Barbatos model with the special coating. It is a little bit finicky to open, and I find myself inadvertently pressing the button on the back. I like the fact that the earbuds can go on either ear, and as a result can be placed back into either side of the case. I often share an earbud with my wife or daughter while we are walking or doing chores, and tend to switch which ear is in use depending on where the other person is walking so that we can hear each other better, so not having to figure out which one goes where when putting them back in the case saves like a second of cognitive power.

The Shokz Open-Ear Bluetooth Earbuds have been a really pleasant surprise. I’ve reviewed a lot of different earbuds over the years, and some, especially the fruit-shaped ones, are extremely uncomfortable and not ideal for long periods of use. Others fit very well, but not everyone likes in-ear earbuds. There is definitely a market for open-ear earbuds, and these are terrific. They have great battery life, are comfortable for long listening sessions, and sit nicely on my ears. The sound quality really surprised me as well. I spend a lot of time listening to music each day, and these have been great. I would put them in the same category as some of the Bose earbuds I’ve used over the years. Setup was simple, and you can easily pair them with your phone in about 20 seconds. There is also an app you can use to set up the earbuds, although it is not required, which is a nice option if you do not want to add more apps to your device. Overall, this is a great product and a really good choice for anyone who prefers open-ear earbuds instead of traditional in-ear ones.

I have tried many different styles and brands of earbuds and for me, they all have the problem: poor fit, so they fall out of my ears. I think out of maybe 5 or 6 wireless earbuds I’ve had, only one pair actually stayed in my ear when exercising. Unfortunately, those were not moisture-resistant so wearing them in the rain killed them. I’ve been looking for decent earbuds that will stay in place, and when I saw these Shokz OpenDots 2 with their clip-on style, I was eager to try them. Shokz includes an actual instruction sheet rather than just a QR codes that directs to a webpage for instructions. In fact, I don’t think there is even a QR code at all. The included instructions simply direct you to download the Shokz app. The app is simple and straightforward. It automatically pairs to the earbuds and steps you through a nice tutorial on how to use the controls. It also automatically prompts to update the firmware on the buds. Once that is done, the sound setting options appear. There are a few presets for voice and bass, plus a guided six-step personalization routine that, like an eye exam, asks, “What sounds better - A or B?” I created a personal setting on the 5-channel equalizer. Putting these buds in the ear is simple. They do grip the earlobe well which keeps them from falling off even during vigorous exercise. The clips are just tight enough to stay in place, so there’s no uncomfortable squeezing. I tried to shake them loose and could not, so I’d say this addresses my main complaint with most earbuds. Overall, they are not uncomfortable to wear, but one big problem I have is that the clips are not long enough. The “business end” of the earbud does not sit evenly against my ear canal opening; it sits just on the edge. The sound is OK, but I found that if I use a finger to move the bud closer, the sound was much better. As they fit me, it’s just what you expect using earbuds “not quite seated” in the ear: The bass is weak and there a lot of ambient noise. The controls are touch-based. Each earbud has two touchpoints. One is via a single finger on the outer edge of the slip, and the other requires using both fingers to tap the top and bottom of the outer piece. It uses a combination of single-tap, double-tap, and hold to activate various features. I find the tap response to be very slow, so it’s hard to double-tap. Also, the two-finger tap on the back part is awkward. Ultimately, I gave up using the controls on the Shokz earbuds and just used the controls on my phone or smart watch. The sound quality is very average due to the poor fit in my ears. I don’t believe I have unusually large ear lobes, so I believe this will be an issue for many users. Also, without any sort of noise-cancelling, ambient sounds really intrude. Even some rubber cups to give a better seal would be an improvement. These are not going to be my go-to earbuds for music listening. I can used them for podcasts and voice calls, but I need better sound quality for my music. These earbuds charge in that case, and it’s easy to put them in and take them out. The LED on the case gives some idea of charge level, and it uses a standard USB-C plug for power. In terms of battery life, they are rated for 10 hours of music, and that’s about right. I got a low-battery warning at 9 hours of used, but I had also been using the touch-sensitive buttons quite a bit. They claim 1-hour charge time, and I verified that. In terms of all-day use, these work well. Overall, these are nice earbuds, but in this price range, there are many offerings with active noise cancelling and better sound. Because of the fit issues that I experienced, I won’t blindly recommend these, but what I suggest is to try them. If they fit your ear well resulting in good sound quality, then buy them. Even with the awkward controls, the battery life and on-ear stability are worth the price.
