The evolution of open-ear listening
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a big fan of Shokz headphones—this is my fifth pair, so I’m definitely on board. If you know Shockz (formerly Aftershokz), then you know that they made a name for themselves producing high-quality bone-conduction headphones. These allow you to keep your ear canals free so that you don’t lose touch with your surroundings—as a runner and biker, this is especially important to me for safety reasons. It’s always been a given that I would have to give up sound quality for special awareness, and I didn’t mind that, but always wished the sound quality could be better. Don’t get me wrong, Shokz has improved the sound quality of their bone-conduction headphones with each release, enough that I’ve traded up several times, but they were never the headphones I’d choose if I just wanted to shut out the world and enjoy my music. The Openfit earbuds are their attempt to bridge the gap and bring serious sound quality to open ear headphones. Normally, my top two criteria for evaluating earbuds/headphones are comfort and sound quality. All the features in the world don’t matter if they sound bad or if you won’t wear them because they’re uncomfortable. One of the best things about bone-conduction headphones is their comfort. You can literally wear them for hours and not even know they’re there. I have a lot of earbuds, some of which are pretty comfortable, but even the best of them are fatiguing after a while, plus I just don’t like having something in my ears that long. Even with recent technology additions like “hear through”, it’s just not practical to have buds in my ears all day. As I’ve already said, bone-conduction headphones don’t win in the sound quality category, but the ability to maintain situational awareness has always trumped that for me, so I’ve stayed with them. The latest offering from Shokz is the Openfit. These are their first true wireless earbuds. They’re not bone-conduction, but they are still open ear earbuds, meaning that they don’t sit in the ear canal like regular earbuds. Instead, they utilize hooks that go around your ear (called Dolphin Arc hooks), with tiny speakers sitting right inside your ears, directing sound into the ear canals. The hooks are amazingly secure, and I did not manage to dislodge them shaking my head, running, or bending all the way over. In addition, they’re super comfortable, covered in a substance Shokz calls “liquid silicone”. It is very soft and adapts to the size of your ear, making them comfortable enough to wear for hours on end without fatigue. They even work well with glasses, which is something I was worried about. Out of the box, I wore them for 3 hours straight with only a little “tiredness” on the backs of my ears, but that may have actually been due to the combination of the earbuds and my glasses. These may be the first earbuds I really could wear all day, but I haven’t gone that far yet. Pairing them with your phone the first time is very easy, as they go into pairing mode when you take them out of their compact charging case, which features USB-C charging, but not wireless charging. Strangely, Openfit does not support multipoint pairing like their other headphones do, so you’ll have to delete the pairing with your phone and then pair them with another device if you want to use them with something else. This is a minorly annoying oversight, given that Shokz knows how to do this. So, the Openfit check the comfort box, but how good do they sound? I paired them right out of the box and started listening. I used my normal music app, which features customizable EQ. They sounded good, but didn’t wow me. I decided to try the app to see if it had any additional magic to add. When the app started up, my music was still playing, but it asked if I wanted to update the firmware, which I did. When the update finished, I picked some EQ settings in the app, and wow! What a difference! I’m not sure whether the app or the update (or both) did the trick, but it really made the Openfit sound great! They aren’t going to cause you to stop using your studio-quality IEMs, but these have sound that bone-conduction can only dream of! Highs are crisp, mids are clean, and bass is good but not great (need to leave some room for improvement). Other reviewers have mentioned how some bass sounds, particularly kick drums, don’t sound quite right, and I agree. I liken the sound to what I would get when my speakers got too old and the foam would dry rot, leaving the cones to vibrate without any dampening. It’s like that, although not exactly and not all the time. I’m hoping that Shokz will be able to fix this with a firmware update in the future. Overall, though, these sound really great, and I’m willing to trade a little sound quality for the ability to comfortably wear them as long as I want and still maintain situational awareness. Call quality is great, and my wife, who usually complains about earbud call quality, said I sounded great. She couldn’t tell I was talking to her via earbuds. Speaking of calls, it would be nice if there were a way to mute myself during calls, but this is not available. The touch controls are very good, once you get used to the angle of the earbuds in your ears. Unfortunately, your choices on how to use them are somewhat limited. By default, you can double-tap to play/pause your music or podcast. Long pressing on the right bud will skip to the next track, while the left will go to the previous track. There are a few other configuration choices in the app, but you can’t have the ability to control the volume, track skipping and voice assistant together at the same time, nor can you choose which side you want for things like voice assistant. Hopefully, Shokz will add more options in the future. I really do think Shokz has hit their goal with the Openfit. They’ve got an IP54 rating for water and dust resistance, which should mean they’re fine for running and workouts, but I wouldn’t submerge them. Speaking of workouts, one of the annoying things about bone-conduction headphones is that the headband on the back of your head would push the buds out of place if you laid your head on a bench. Not so with the Openfit, since there is no headband to contend with. If you’ve already got a pair of bone-conduction headphones, especially the OpenRun or OpenRun Pro, you may not need these unless the sound quality or other features are calling to you. I’m deducting a star for the issue with bass sounds and lack of multipoint pairing, but I hope that both of these will be corrected in the future. The Openfit are perhaps the best all-around earbuds on the market today, and for most things, they’ll be my new go-to earbuds. They’re a bit pricey right now, but hopefully that will come down over time as well. If you’re trying to decide if you should get these, it comes down to your specific use cases. If you value situational awareness and are willing to trade some sound quality to get it, these are the best combination of those two things. If your main use case is sitting down to lose yourself in the music, but you want to run while listening to podcasts now and then, you might be happier with traditional earbuds. There are so many different choices these days, but I think Shokz has a winner on their hands with the Openfit. I’ll be using these alternately with my OpenRun headphones to see which I prefer over the long haul, and which version I’ll keep buying when the time comes.

Comfortable, even with glasses, and nice sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm sort of picky about earbuds. The sort that squeeze into your ear canal never fit properly for me, despite trying every size tip. The other sort that just slide over your ear canal and hang out a little bit also never stay in place and, especially the wireless ones, pop out and get lost. Shokz, well known for their bone induction headsets, have offered up an alternative solution. The OpenFit earphones wrap around the outside of your ear, and instead of going into or over your ear canal, they get inserted just above the canal and have tiny speakers that direct the sound into your ear from there. This has the benefit of allowing you to still hear environmental sounds while also being immersed in the audio that you are playing. This is the complete opposite of the ANC that many others tout, since instead of cancelling the outside noise and being in your own bubble, you are still very much aware of your surroundings. Listening to music with the OpenFit earbuds is quite enjoyable. The treble is clean and clear, with well defined mids, and decent bass depending on what you are listening to. I threw on some old wubby EDM tracks just to see how they would react, and with the subs going all over in the track itself, the bass response couldn't keep up and sort of had a warbled doppler effect. Throwing on Havergal Brian's Symphony No1 in D minor, I forgot that I was wearing headphones and listening to music while I was washing dishes, and I was wondering why everything felt so epic. Since these wrap around the auricle of the ear, at first I was worried about how they would be with glasses, so I made sure to try them both with my contacts and my glasses, as well as a pair of sunglasses. I was surprised to find that they were just as comfortable to use both bespectacled and without. This is a welcome change from the usual set of cans that I prefer, which always squeeze my glasses uncomfortably, causing them to readjust with every little movement. They also don't mess up my hair like wearing a pair of cans all day will. Being able to listen to environmental sounds while still enjoying a podcast or soaking in a new album is huge as a parent. There's times where I want to listen to something while doing a mind numbing chore, but end up doing it in silence because I have to listen out for my daughter in the other room. With these on, I can fold laundry, do dishes, and cook dinner while still being attentive, and even participate in family conversations, all while jamming to my "get things done" playlist. Multipoint pairing is also sort of a thing, but only through the app. The earbuds will connect to two different devices and the app allows switching between the devices. The earbuds will not auto-connect to whatever the proper device is. My only gripe is the touch controls and lack of sensors that can tell if they are being worn and automatically stop playback that I'm used to with other wireless earbuds. By default, the only things that you can do with the touch controls are changing the track and pausing, as well as answering/rejecting calls. Volume control is not possible through touch controls. And taking out the earbuds will not pause the music automatically. Not really a dealbreaker, but would have been nice to have.

Great open-ear earbuds for outdoor activities
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought a pair of the Trekz Titanium bone-conduction headphones when they first came out, mainly for use when bicycle riding, where being able to hear your surroundings is an important safety issue. While they still work well enough, the wraparound strap makes them bulky to carry around and can cause issues by interfering with my helmet, helmet straps, and eyeglasses. So I was ready to try out these new open-ear headphones that do not work by bone conduction but by some sort of “directed sound” technology. They are certainly comfortable to wear and I could hardly tell that they were there compared to wireless earbuds that plug into your ear canals and get uncomfortable after a while. I could easily see wearing these all day if called for. The soft rubber retainer that wraps around your ear seem secure enough and I have not had any problem with them falling off. That’s another difference from conventional earbuds, especially when used during outdoor activities like running or cycling. I paired the OpenFit earbuds with my Pixel 7a smartphone and also my Garmin Venu 2 Plus smartwatch with no problems at all and was able to play content from both devices without any hitches. The OpenFit can be paired with multiple devices – not at the same time – but I was unable to find any information about how many pairings can be saved. The sound seemed very good, although I’m inclined more to podcasts than music and can’t really judge their frequency response, etc. On the downside, playback and calls are controlled by touch-sensitive button areas on both earbuds and the functions available are limited by default to pause/play and track fwd/back. When I first read the (online) user guide, I found that it said “Volume control: Use the volume control on the paired Bluetooth device.” This is unacceptable for me since, especially when cycling, my smartphone is not in a place where I can easily get at or use it! Fortunately, after downloading the Shokz app from the Google store, I discovered that the app will let you reprogram the buttons and one of the available functions is volume up/down. Still, it seems like they could have supported a few more functions for the buttons; they are also a bit finicky in operation, often requiring a couple of tries to press the right spot, do a double-tap, etc. I’d much prefer a more tactile control, but maybe that just wasn’t possible with this design. My main use for these is for outdoor activities. I tried them at the gym once, but that’s a place where I’d like to block out ambient noise and prefer my ANC earbuds. They are great for walking and running, and I especially liked them for cycling. They are so light that I could hardly tell that I had them on and are much more comfortable than my old bone-conduction headset and don’t interfere with my helmet or glasses. Wind noise is always an issue when cycling but I didn’t have to turn up the volume excessively to hear clearly; this adjustment was easy to make after reprogramming the touch controls as mentioned above. These are definitely the best open-ear earbuds that I have used, and with a few UI improvements could be even better.

Top-notch comfort with excellent sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros -clear, loud sound -excellent comfort and fit -single ear / mono use -quick charging -customized sound setting via Shokz App Cons -single indicator light on case I am not a fan of traditional earbuds that have to be inserted in the ear because they rarely stay in place when working out, especially once the sweat starts pouring. I also have a hard time finding earbuds that are comfortable after a long wear time. These wrap around, open-fit earbuds are by far the most comfortable pair I’ve ever worn and are a great option for those who share similar issues with fit and discomfort that traditional earbuds can bring. While these aren't noise canceling due to their open-fit design, they do produce very loud sound to produce a similar noise blocking effect. I wore these while mowing and the volume can be loud enough to tune out the mower substantially. (They also play music loud enough that I was able to successfully hunt down a "misplaced" earbud that one of my cats had batted off the counter and under the fridge, unbeknownst to me.) The sound quality with these earbuds is excellent (once adjusted), and with the use of the Shokz App, you can fine tune the sound settings to your liking and even save your customized setting. In addition to the excellent comfort, fit, and sound, the microphones works very well when in use for phone calls. They filter out background noise and pick up your voice very well. Another positive factor of these earbuds is the ability to use only one earbud at once (mono use). Usually when I go outside for a walk or run, I prefer to only wear one earbud so that I can listen for approaching cars. With the open-fit design, which allows for more surrounding sounds to be heard, I felt comfortable wearing both earbuds during my walks and found the perfect balance for listening to music while still being able to take in my surroundings. The open-fit design is additionally nice for talking on the phone with both earbuds in use since I could hear myself speaking. Additionally, the touch controls on the earbuds are responsive and easy to use, and can also be customized through the Shokz App. The battery life of the earbuds is good. They're not as good as other earbuds I own, but I felt that it was satisfactory for my needs. The good news for heavy users is that the earbuds do recharge fairly quickly, and the case holds a charge to keep the earbuds fully charged between uses. Oddly, it does appear that when plugged in, the earbuds aren’t charged simultaneously, so one will be fully charged before the other. The only slight downside to these earbuds is with the battery indicator light on the case. It’s a single light that only indicates high or low battery base on the color being green or orange. I have a pair of earbuds with a case that has four indicator lights, and I feel that provides a bit more accuracy to where the charge level is at with the case. Overall, very I am happy with these earbuds and highly recommend for those looking for a pair of earbuds that provide excellent comfort, fit and sound.
